Confession & Forgiveness Pastor Kathy Nolte
Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,
whose teaching is life, whose presence is sure,
and whose love is endless. Amen.
Let us confess our sins to the one who welcomes us with an open heart.
    Silence is kept for reflection.

    God our comforter:
like lost sheep, we have gone astray.
We gaze upon abundance and see scarcity.
We turn our faces away from injustice and oppression.
We exploit the earth with our apathy and greed.
Free us from our sin, gracious God.
Listen when we call out to you for help.
Lead us by your love to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
By the gift of grace in ☩ Christ Jesus,
    God makes you righteous.
Receive with glad hearts the forgiveness of all your sins. Amen.

Sharing of the Peace Pastor Kathy Nolte

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.
(Please ask before touching or shaking hands – some just need a word of peace.)
Gathering Hymn Open Our Eyes Lord (Sung Gently into Masks)

Opening Prayer Pastor Kathy Nolte

Reading Isaiah 35:4-7a Dean Ennes
       4
Say to those who are of a fearful heart,
         “Be strong, do not fear!
Here is your God. He will come with vengeance,
     with terrible recompense.
He will come and save you.”
     5
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
         and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
     6
then the lame shall leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
For waters shall break forth in the wilderness,
         and streams in the desert;
     7a
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water.
Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God!
Reading Seeking God’s Purpose by Alice Munro Dean Ennes

My mother prayed on her knees at midday,
at night, and first thing in the morning.
Every day opened up to her
to have God’s will done in it.
    Every night she totted up
what she’d done and said and thought,
to see how it squared with Him.

That kind of life is dreary, people think,
    but they’re missing the point.
For one thing, such a life can never be boring.
And nothing can happen to you that you can’t make use of.
Even if you’re racked by troubles
and sick and poor and ugly,
you’ve got your soul to carry through life
like a treasure on a platter.
Going upstairs to pray after the noon meal,
my mother would be full of energy and expectation,
    seriously smiling.

Gospel Mark 7:24-37 Pastor Kathy Nolte

The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the 7th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

    24
Jesus left and went to the region near the city of Tyre, where he stayed in
someone’s home. He did not want people to know he was there, but they found out
anyway. 25 A woman whose daughter had an evil spirit in her heard where Jesus was.
And right away she came and knelt down at his feet. 26 The woman was Greek and
had been born in the part of Syria known as Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to force
the demon out of her daughter. 27 But Jesus said, “The children must first be fed! It
isn’t right to take away their food and feed it to dogs.”
28
The woman replied, “Lord, even dogs eat the crumbs that children drop from the
table.” 29 Jesus answered, “That’s true! You may go now. The demon has left your
daughter.” 30 When the woman got back home, she found her child lying on the bed.
    The demon had gone.

    31
Jesus left the region around Tyre and went by way of Sidon toward Lake Galilee.
He went through the land near the ten cities known as Decapolis. 32 Some people
brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk. They begged Jesus just to
    touch him.

    33
After Jesus had taken him aside from the crowd, he stuck his fingers in the man’s
ears. Then he spit and put it on the man’s tongue. 34 Jesus looked up toward heaven,
and with a groan he said, “Effatha!” which means “Open up!” 35 At once the man
could hear, and he had no more trouble talking clearly. 36 Jesus told the people not
to say anything about what he had done. But the more he told them, the more they
talked about it. 37 They were completely amazed and said, “Everything he does is
good! He even heals people who cannot hear or talk.”
The Gospel of our Lord, Praise to you, O Christ.

Communion

    The Lord be with you.
    And also with you.
    Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
O God triune, how majestic
is your name in all the earth.
Over the eons your merciful might
evolved our home, a fragile tree of life.

O God triune, you took on our flesh in Jesus our healer.
In Christ you bring life from death;
we remember his cross,
we laud his resurrection.
Broken like bread, he enlivens our body.
Outpoured like wine, he fills the earth with goodness.
We praise you for the heart of Jesus,
so filled with your love for this earth.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

O God triune, you create the worlds,
you uphold the living, you embrace the dead.
Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.
Strengthen us for our journey with this meal,
the body and blood of Christ.

Give us a future that trusts in you
and cares for your earth.
Empowered by your promises,
we rise from our deaths to praise you again:
The earth is full of your glory,
God in Community, Holy in One. Amen.
Lord’s Prayer Pastor Kathy Nolte

Gathered into one, let us pray as Jesus taught us according to our own language or custom.
       Abba Imma/Our Father in heaven,
       hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
                  on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
       Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
       and deliver us from evil.
       For the kingdom, the power,
       and the glory are yours,
             now and forever. Amen.
