THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY VOL. 74 NO. 35 AUGUST 29, 2021 As part of the Baptism service we will pray the Lord’s Prayer and Confess the Apostles’ Creed. Both are printed below. Lord’s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Apostles’ Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. 3
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY VOL. 74 NO. 35 AUGUST 29, 2021 Praise Choruses “All Hail King Jesus / Open Our Eyes” Words and Music by Dave Moody / Bob Cull All Hail King Jesus All hail, King Jesus. All hail, Emmanuel. King of kings and Lord of lords, bright Morning Star. Throughout all eternity, I'm going to praise Him; and forevermore, I will reign with Him. (repeat) Open Our Eyes Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, To reach out and touch Him and say that we love Him. Open our ears, Lord, help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. (repeat) Epistle Galatians 3:15-22 P The Epistle is from Galatians, chapter 3. 15 To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. 16Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. 17This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. 19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one. 21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 4

Used by permission: CCLI no. 123456 Holy Gospel St. Luke 10:23-37 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the tenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 23 Turning to the disciples [Jesus] said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.” 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34He went to him and 5
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY VOL. 74 NO. 35 AUGUST 29, 2021 bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Hymn of the Day O God of Mercy, God of Might LSB #852 (to the tune of AGPS #182) Text: Public domain O God of mercy, God of might, In love and pity infinite, Teach us, as ever in Thy sight, To live our lives in Thee. And Thou, who cam’st on earth to die That our lost world might live thereby, O hear us; for to Thee we cry, In hope, O Lord, to Thee. Teach us the lesson Thou hast taught: To feel for those Thy blood hath bought, That ev’ry word and deed and thought May work a work for Thee. All are redeemed, both far and wide, Since Thou, O Lord, for all hast died. Grant us the will and grace provide To love them all in Thee! In sickness, sorrow, want, or care, May we each other’s burdens share; May we, where help is needed, there Give help as unto Thee! And may Thy Holy Spirit move All those who live to live in love Till Thou shalt greet in heav’n above All those who live in Thee. 6

Welcome to Worship! – “Who is my neighbor?” That’s the question an expert in the Torah puts to Jesus in Luke 10. In answer, Jesus tells the very familiar parable of the Good Samaritan and in so doing teaches us about “Radical Neighboring.” A Samaritan man is neighbor to a Jewish man, regardless of race, cost, or reason for his troubles. But there is more. Jesus never tells stories simply to show us how to live. He tells this story so we might see His love for us. The real question isn’t “Who is my neighbor?” but “Who is a neighbor?” Join us in person or online to be neighbored by Christ, Himself! Prayer Concerns – In our prayers this Sunday we ask God to give courage and peace to those persecuted for their faith, especially for Christian people in Afghanistan. We also lift up our prospective refugee family in Palestine, asking that the way become clear for them to enter Canada in the near future. Closer to home, we ask God to guide us as we look forward to resuming or traditional fall schedule for Worship, Bible Class and Sunday School and to bless our outreach with the Gospel. We lift up to the throne of grace those who look to the Lord for healing and strength, including Bill Schmidt, Diann Helliwell, Kurt Boese and others. Finally we ask God to bless all who mourn, especially the family of Betty Hebner who passed away in January and whose remains were laid to rest yesterday. Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayers!
