habitats. The walking is easy and slow and there is plenty of time for questions.

Instructor: Suzanne Carlisle is an artist and amateur botanist who deeply enjoys showing others the beauty of
plants. She has 50 years of gardening experience and academic classes in botany, horticulture, soils and local flora.
She has taught botany and art classes for Sunrise Senior College for several years.

Early in the spring, just as the ground thaws and the ponds begin to thaw, something miraculous happens. Wood
frogs, spotted salamanders, and spring peepers emerge from their winter hideaways and migrate on the first warm
rainy night to the nearest vernal pool to breed and lay their eggs. An explosion of life! They stay for only a few
weeks, then retreat back into the surrounding forest where they rest, feed, and move either between wetlands or
underground until the winter freeze returns. Come learn all about the amazing life cycle of these and other vernal
pool critters, the important role they play in our forest food webs, and how we can conserve these special places.

Instructor: Dr. Stockwell is a wildlife ecologist and Director of Conservation at Maine Audubon. She has been
involved with vernal pool studies, community science projects, outreach, and conservation for over 40 years.

Class Information: This class is being held via Zoom.

Bird populations in Maine are constantly changing. A total of 445 species have been recorded in Maine. Some
have been here for a long time while others are fairly new. Some are accidental and others introduced. A few of
those species have been extirpated and we may never see them again. Maine Audubon will explain some of the
major changes and fluctuations occurring with Maine avian fauna.

Instructor: Nick Lund is Maine Audubon’s Network and Outreach Manager. He writes regular columns about
nature for National Audubon, the Portland Phoenix, the Maine Sportsman, and other publications.

Class Information: This class is being held via Zoom.

                                                         Room 230

Western philosophy began c. 600 BC in ancient Greece, with a group known as the Pre-Socratics, since almost all of
them predated the philosopher Socrates. One of them, Pythagoras, is well-known, but most of the others (excepting
possibly Heraclitus) are obscure. Following a brief, preliminary discussion of the nature of philosophy, this class
will examine how the Pre-Socratics invented it. Prior to philosophy, both the culture and the mental life of the Greek
world were based on war, music, poetry (notably that of Homer), myth, and religion. Large-scale political
developments of the time not only created a "safe space" for, but actually encouraged, a radical new way of thinking.
It is fascinating to see how the earliest philosophers more or less made it up as they went along, using the very
limited conceptual resources available to them from their culture, and brilliantly making up new concepts, or
redefining existing words, as these moves became necessary in order to arrive at a radically new, rational way to
engage with the world.

Instructor: Dr. Wilcox has a PhD in philosophy, with a specialty in the Pre-Socratics. He taught Greek philosophy
for more than 30 years.

Class Information: This class will be held at UMM's Torrey Hall, Room 230.

places. Some plants may be thought of as medicinal in folklore or alternative medicine and Suzanne will discuss
these but won’t be making any diagnoses! The walking is easy and slow and there is plenty of time for questions.

A Nepal Travelogue with Peter Duston

                                                        Thursday, August 5th
                                                        1:00 to 2:30 PM – via Zoom

This is a heart-warming story about a mountain-climbing trip to Nepal that started out as a once-in-a-life-time
adventure and ended up as a mission to change the life of a 13-year-old Nepali girl. Beautiful photography of the
Himalaya and the people of that region await you in this course.

Instructor: Peter Duston was a history teacher, college counselor and ski coach. He grew up hiking, back packing
and skiing. He has skied from the summit of Mt. Washington, NH, from the summit glacier of Mt. Hood, Oregon,
and the European Alps. He through-hiked the 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail as “Talkerman” at age 69. As a
14-year-old Explorer Scout, he followed the conquests of all the world’s highest mountains in Nepal and Tibet and
still has his scrapbooks from that time. His dream was always to climb Mt. Everest. Finally, Peter had the
opportunity to visit Nepal and embark on a trekking trip to Everest Base Camp to at least “touch” Mt. Everest. He
still serves as a Scout leader introducing local boys and girls to confidence building adventure.

Class Information: This class is being held via Zoom.
