EDUCATED A MEMOIR •Tara Westover grew up in a fundamentalist Mormon family of survivalists in Idaho. •Her father didn’t allow her to attend public school. She helped her midwife mother, stockpiled food, and dealt with violent outbursts from family members. •Tara decided to educate herself. She learned enough to enter Brigham Young University. She eventually attended Harvard and Cambridge, where she earned a Ph.D.

•The writers based the story on the case of The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes (1925), commonly known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. Scopes was charged with teaching the theory of evolution at a high school in Dayton, INHERIT THE WIND Tennessee, in violation of Tennessee’s law. •The case was seen as pitting science against religion. ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND BY LEWIS CARROLL • Lewis Carroll is the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodson, an Anglican clergyman and lecturer in logic and mathematics at Christ Church Oxford. • He published Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. Alice Liddell, the daughter of the dean of Christ Church, is thought by some to be the inspiration for Carroll’s Alice books.
