The University of St Andrews Summer Baroque Courses offer outstanding tuition from world-class musicians. Concerts, rehearsals, masterclasses and workshops will broaden your experience and inspire your musicianship. Uncommonly, the courses offer one-to-one tuition for all participants. Join us in beautiful, historic St Andrews for six days of inspiring musical exploration, led by internationally-renowned experts. Highlights • Masterclasses/workshops with John Butt OBE, Laurence Cummings and Dame Emma Kirkby • Individual lessons from in-house tutors • Joint concert, featuring the instrumental repertoire alongside Bach’s Cantata no. 4, Christ lag in Todesbanden • Joint liturgical performance of Bach’s Cantata no. 196, Der Herr denket an uns, in the inspiring fifteenth-century St Salvator’s Chapel • The chance to soak up the unique atmosphere of St Andrews: to have a dip in the sea, to walk along the stunning sandy beaches and to enjoy the world-famous ice cream from Jannettas Gelateria! Observers are welcomed, and may attend events on both courses.

Bach Choral Course The Bach Choral Course is for you if: • You are aged 16 or more (there is no upper age limit!) • You wish to develop your choral skills under expert guidance • You are an ambitious young singer (perhaps a choral scholar, or similar) interested in making professional contacts • You are a keen amateur singer (a member of a choral society, or similar) • You wish to spend six days exploring Bach’s choral music, in inspiring surroundings, with like-minded people. Every choral participant will receive 60 minutes of one-to-one vocal tuition. There are up to three places available for choral conductors; if chosen, you will be given opportunities to conduct the course choir, and receive guidance from the course director. “The course is an excellent opportunity to rehearse and perform challenging repertoire, under expert guidance. The fantastic visiting tutors bring a huge variety of approaches, which are very refreshing. Every year I have been able to pick up transferable knowledge that has allowed me to improve as an ensemble singer.” Participant 2019
Instrumental Course The Instrumental Course is a summer school with a difference. Not only will you rehearse with eminent musicians, but you will perform with them in public. Following two performances in historic St Andrews, the course concludes with a concert in St Cecilia’s Hall, Edinburgh – the oldest purpose-built concert hall in Scotland, completed in 1762. The Instrumental Course is for you if: • You are a committed musician aged 18-30, interested in collaborating with and learning from both peers and established professionals • You are currently studying your instrument at University or College, or have recently graduated • You play one (or more) of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harpsichord • You have experience of playing baroque instruments • You are able to supply your own baroque instrument and bow (string players only!) In certain circumstances, a place may be offered to an exceptional applicant who cannot supply their own baroque instrument. If you are a modern player with an enthusiasm for historically-informed performance, able to adapt rapidly to playing at A=415 Hz, then this course is also for you. It may be possible to lend you a baroque instrument and bow for the duration of the course. Every instrumental participant will receive at least 60 minutes of one-to- one tuition with an in-house tutor. Formation of chamber groups is also encouraged, if you can find the time! Instrumental repertoire: Earl of Kellie: Symphony no. 8 in C minor Corelli: Concerto Grosso op. 6 no. 1 in D Geminiani: Concerto Grosso H. 143 (after Corelli: La Folia) Solo opportunities in both concerti grossi are available, depending on ability. A collaborative approach to rehearsing and performing is actively encouraged. We want to hear what YOU think about the music – lively debate is encouraged in and out of rehearsals!
