EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE TO SUCCEED IMPACT REPORT 2019/20 m e o p p ortu nities It’s g iv e n t h o u g h t I w ould do... I never to do things e nce now I have m o r e c on f id southbristolyouth.org.uk
A MESSAGE FROM THE SOUTH BRISTOL YOUTH TEAM Young people’s lives have been turned upside down this year, particularly the young people we work with, who face a range of challenging circumstances. Now, more than ever, they have needed to draw on their confidence, resilience, and ability to adapt to change. And so have we. Before lockdown, we had been able to deliver two thirds of our programmes and activities for 2019/20, reaching 1,688 students, through 282 activities. When Covid hit, we had to find new ways to work with young people, their schools and families. We quickly adapted to create online activities and content, as well as physical activity packs delivered direct to families in the post. Young people, families and schools have told us just how important that work has been. And for us, we have found new and engaging ways of working with them, which we will continue to develop as part of our programmes. We’d like to begin this report by saying a heartfelt thank you to them, for not giving up, and to our funders and partners who were supportive and flexible, enabling us to respond quickly and provide the best possible support to young people in these circumstances. One of the many frustrations for us has been that we have not been able to capture as much impact evidence as we’d normally share in this report. The first lockdown prevented us from collecting end of term data. The second lockdown stopped us from talking with students in the autumn to learn more about how far they’d come. However, we hope that the images and words of young people, and their schools and families, will speak just as powerfully. We know that the effects of this pandemic will continue to ripple through young people’s lives for many years to come. Our work, enabling young people to build their strengths and capabilities, and work towards fulfilling employment, is more important now than ever before. OUR MODEL FOR ADVICE, GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT TRANSFORMATIVE 1 To understand pathways to work, apprenticeships, FE and HE – CHANGE we know that young people lack knowledge rather than aspiration and they need practical help to make the best choices. SPEAKING, LISTENING AND WRITING SKILLS DEVELOPMENT 2 We focus on communication skills so young people learn how to clearly express their thoughts and ideas and present themselves well. BUILDING CULTURAL AND SOCIAL CAPITAL 3 We help young people to build links across our area. This gives them a sense of ownership of their locality, the confidence to access premier arts and heritage, and new networks to help them in the future. DEVELOPING POSITIVE CHARACTER TRAITS 4 We help young people to appreciate and develop curiosity, perseverance, conscientiousness, optimism and self-awareness and to understand how these traits will help them to do well in life. PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT 5 Family support and encouragement with education makes a huge difference. We meet parents and carers regularly, invite them to celebrate their children’s achievements and put on special events for them. 4

FAMILY LOCKDOWN CHALLENGES Relationships with families are an important part of our work. See the gallery on our website for some of the creative responses to our ‘A view from my window’ challenge, when we posted 500 postcards and pens to families. A second challenge asked families to submit stories from their local area. 10
