B LUE GRO U S E ESTATE WINE RY What really matters? Stewardship The Blue Grouse Estate Winery team’s philosophy evolves from the concept of “stewardship”, where our aim is to make everything we touch better than it was when we found it. We apply this to training Bailey Williamson our team of employees, the environment that hosts our vineyard winemaker and home, the vines we grow, the wines we make, the infrastructure which supports the winery and vineyard, and the economics of our business model – everything. People We care deeply about family and friends, honesty, simplicity and living a long and healthy life. We believe all this together will make the Blue Grouse experience a lasting one. Paul Brunner proprietor Place The vineyard’s terroir encompasses wind protection by evergreen trees, an all-Southern exposure, and a combination of clay and gravelly soil, all nurtured by clean air and spring water. Thanks to this exceptional site, the vines require little fertilization and irrigation; just a drop of passion, a splash of dedication and a pinch of obsession to make the difference! Sarah Bain, Winemaker Sarah began her path in the wine industry working in the vineyards of Central Otago, New Zealand, in 2004. It was just a summer job to start, but it only took one vintage to convince her that growing and making wine was her future. Since then, her career has been based mainly in Central Otago at two leading organic and biodynamic producers. She worked first at Burn Cottage making premium quality Pinot Noir, and then at Quartz Reef: one of New Zealand’s leading producers of Traditional Method sparkling. Sarah has also worked vintages in California, Germany, and Canada. And now again in Canada with Fitz. S A R A @ S PA R K I N V I C TO R I A . C A | 2 5 0. 8 1 8 .6 4 6 9 S A R A PA R K 15

RO C H E WIN ES Deep roots in French tradition nourish our shared passion for soils, vines and wine. Dedicated to natural, artisan farming and winemaking, we strive to reveal the intimate relation of wine and terroir. RO C H E WIN ES Domaine Roche On the southern edge of the Naramata Bench, this vineyard overlooks the city of Penticton and Okanagan Lake. The twenty- year old ungrafted vines are deeply rooted in a mix of silt, organic matter and gravel. The gentle westward slope at the base of Campbell Mountain ensures good drainage and ideal exposure. We farm our vineyards using organic methods. Environmental stewardship is important to us for the health of our family and ecosystem, and for the contribution it makes to the quality of our wines. This vineyard site adjoins the winery and includes 3 acres of Schonberger, 1 acre of Zweigelt, 1.12 acres of Chardonnay and 0.63 acres of Pinot noir. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were planted in summer 2017. Kozier Organic Vineyard Planted in 2007, Kozier Organic vineyard is located on the Naramata bench, 4 km north of the winery. The 15-acre vineyard is a gently sloping amphitheater, steeper as it approaches the mountainside. It faces west toward Okanagan lake. Gravel, sand and organic material from the mountainside above mix with denser glacial silt. The certified organic farm benefits from the synergy of a warm microclimate with cool soils ensuring long, even ripening. Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Gewurztraminer are planted according to variations in slope orientation and subsoils to meet the needs of each variety. Pénélope Roche Born with wine in her blood, Pénélope counts six generations of viticulture and winemaking at Château Les Carmes Haut- Brion, the small family estate whose elegant wines rival the Crus Classés of Bordeaux. From oenology and viticulture studies in Bordeaux to winemaking in Spain, New Zealand and Australia, Pénélope brings to the Okanagan a profound and holistic understanding of the grapevine’s relationship with its environment, from a winemaker’s perspective. Pénélope is also a wine growing consultant, and teaches viticulture at Okanagan College. Dylan Roche Dylan left North Vancouver in 2000 to work as a bicycle mechanic in Burgundy and suffered a conversion experience; a diploma in viticulture and winemaking in Beaune led to apprenticeships in the Côte d’Or, Chablis, and New Zealand. Five years in Bordeaux included teaching oenology and sensory evaluation classes at Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, and managing a small winery in Margaux. Dylan has been farming vineyards and making wine in the Okanagan Valley since 2011. S A R A @ S PA R K I N V I C TO R I A . C A | 2 5 0. 8 1 8 .6 4 6 9 S A R A PA R K 29
