Producer in Focus Domaine Danjou-Banessy T his month our Producer in Focus takes us to the heart of the l'Agly valley in the Roussillon as if you were sitting in the shade with winemaker Sébastien Danjou- Banessy amongst his ancient vines, drinking the wines yourself. We catch up with Sébastien, one-half of the Danjou-Banessy brothers, to learn about their much- anticipated release. Known for their lively, elegant, softly textured, and refreshing style that has been applauded with high scores by Tamlyn Currin for JancisRobinson.com in her article Roussillon Proudly Independent part 1 and part 2. She tells readers that the white- wine vineyards are arguably her favourite winemaking region - now producing "some of the most exciting wines imaginable. Not only that, but these old vines are remarkably resilient, quite possibly holding valuable genetic keys to climate-change adaptability." We learn about “the translation of the weather in the wines” and how the Danjou brothers capture acidity and freshness while maintaining a hands-off approach in the ever-changing climatic conditions. The family-run estate has been making natural wine for over 50 years; the philosophy is “no products in the vines, no products in the wines that’s it.” Tamlyn points out that the Roussillon is known as one of France's "most forward- thinking regions, which is leading the way in organic production not just in France but in Europe." “The way the Roussillon has been so "The Roussillon producers I have got to overlooked is one of the biggest travesties know, make their wines with laser integrity of the wine world”, as Tamlyn discovers the – they love and manage their vineyards and almost "perturbing grace" that these wines make their wines the way that they live can have. “The best wines, come from the their lives.
