Subjects to Study at Key Stage 4 2020- 2022 Guidance for students and their parents St Bede’s and St Joseph’s Catholic College Curriculum Pathways 2020-2022
This booklet provides you with information about the courses available to your child in Years 10 and 11 at St Bede’s and St Joseph’s Catholic College. Students should ask themselves: “What do I want to do after Y11?” This question needs to be carefully thought about when selecting subjects to study at Key Stage 4. Some students will not have a clear answer to this and others will. First and foremost, students should select subjects in which they have an interest and which they enjoy. If students do have some idea about their future career then they should select subjects that support their plans; subject selection should not be based on what friends have chosen. Student have been placed on a pathway using the following information: Key Stage 2 data from National Tests in Year 6, Year 7 ‘CAT4’ tests and progress data that we collect in school. We have also considered what we know of your child. Each pathway contains an offer and a choice of subjects appropriate to your child. The document on the page next to this one gives you a breakdown of how this works and shows the differences between the pathways. The English Baccalaureate Certificate (EBacc) is a new attainment measure for students and schools. To gain an EBacc Certificate, a student must achieve a grade 4 or above in each of the following five subjects: • GCSE English Language or English Literature (all students will take both), • GCSE Mathematics, • GCSE Science • GCSE in a Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish) • GCSE in a Humanities subject (History or Geography). All students on the EBacc Pathway will have the opportunity to achieve the EBacc with their curriculum offer. Mastery Pathway students should select French or Spanish to achieve the EBacc. A c h i e v e m e n t P a t h w a y a n d B e s p o k e Pathway students are unable to access the EBacc. Some of the country’s top universities (the Russell Group) require students to have the EBacc as it provides breadth and depth to a student’s academic experience. It is with this aspiration in mind that we have developed our curriculum offer. Detailed information about each of the subjects that your child will study or can choose to study is contained throughout this booklet. Your child will need to complete their options form and return it to their House Manager by Friday 3rd April. Appropriate subject choices within each block will be allocated on a first come basis. Students and parents should discuss any further issues or questions with the House Tutor at the Progress and Guidance Meeting in February.
