What skills will you learn? You will learn about: A wide variety of materials, the impact their extraction, use and disposal has on the environment and how designers use them to produce functional products. A wide variety of tools, equipment and machinery, what each of them does, how to use them effectively and safely and how to select the correct tool, piece of equipment or machine for the job. Health and safety in the workshop, how to keep themselves and other safe when making products. A range of communication techniques used by designers. Subject specific vocabulary and technical terms used by designers and manufacturers. Design Technology lessons are project based and designed to encourage students to build confidence, competence and imagination when designing and making products. YEAR 7 STUDENT LEARNING JOURNEY • Health and safety in the kitchen • Kitchen skills such as using a knife • Opportunities around the theory and practice of food technology
Home Learning Home learning is issued every 2 weeks. Enrichment Opportunities • Design Technology Club • Themed Creativity Enrichment Day • End of Year Art and DT Annual Exhibition How to support your Child’s learning What to watch: ‘How it’s Made’, ‘How do they do it?’, documentaries on Designers What to read: Articles on developments in technology, new materials, environmental issues, designers Where to go: Visit a variety of museums showcasing designers work – Design Museum, Brighton Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum. Visit attractions based on technology and engineering – Bluebell Railway, Shoreham Airport, National Museum of Computing, Crossness Pumping Station, Useful websites – www.technologystudent.com www.mr-dt.com www.designmuseum.org SUMMER TASK- What to do over Summer Holidays: • Recycling Challenge – record what you put in your recycling bin for a week and discuss as a family how you could reduce the amount of waste your household produces and how you could reuse some of that waste before recycling it. • Bad Design, Good Design – Not all products are designed well, sometimes there is something fundamentally wrong with a product which makes it hard or unpleasant to use. Look around you household and find one product which is designed really well, and one that is badly designed. Discuss why your family purchased the badly designed product and what they would look for when they need to buy a new one. • MAKE! MAKE! MAKE! – Make stuff and practice your craft skills. Use things from the recycling bin to make desk tidies, toys, bird feeders etc… Build dens outside. Cook at home with the family. Help with the gardening. Welcome to Mathematics at Beacon Academy Mr Stone Head of Mathematics An Introduction to our Department The Maths curriculum at KS3 focuses on the extension and development of skills first explored at KS2. You will be encouraged to develop and improve your Mathematical reasoning and challenged to apply your Mathematical knowledge to real world examples. Problem solving will form a large part of the curriculum and you will be encouraged to use the skills that you have been taught in order to solve problems. Equipment you will need in Maths Many of the topics covered will require you to be familiar using mathematical equipment. We therefore expect students to bring to every lesson a black and red pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, protractor, compass (preferably with a locking device) and a scientific calculator (we strongly recommend the Casio FX83GTX). Topics to be covered in Year 7: Below is our planned topics to be covered but at this is subject to change due to the effects of COVID -19 on schools at the moment. Many of these topics will be a slight extension of what you have already covered in KS2 Autumn 1 Autumn 2 Spring 1 Spring 2 Summer 1 Summer 2 Place value, add Geometry Multiply and Fractions Algebra Percentages and and subtract - Draw, measure divide - Equivalent - Order of Pie charts - Place value (inc. and name acute - Multiply and fractions operations - Read and decimals) and obtuse angles divide (inc. - Multiples and - Substitution (inc. interpret pie charts - Add & subtract - Find unknown decimals) LCM scientific formulae) - Convert between (inc. decimals) angles (straight - Factors, HCF, - Compare and - Plotting graphs percentages and - Negative numbers line, at a point, primes order fractions and using table of fractions and Year 7 -Estimation vertically opposite) - Area of rectangle decimals values decimals - Perimeter -Properties of and triangle - Add and subtract - Simplifying - Percentage of a - Scales triangles and -Area of fractions algebraic quantity - Coordinates quadrilaterals parallelogram - Change mixed to expressions - Find the whole -Reasoning with - Calculate the improper and vice - Solve word given the part and shapes on mean versa problems with the percentage coordinate grids - Add and subtract expressions - Solve word mixed numbers - Sequences (term problems with - Fraction of a to term, not nth proportion quantity term) To help with your learning we hold two sessions after school every week in order to help anyone who is struggling with certain topics or who have had a good attempt at their homework and is struggling. Numerous Maths teachers are available in these sessions to offer help. We will always encourage any of our students to attend.
Enrichment in year 7: Every year we hold the Junior Maths Challenge which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience. Two tasks to try before September: As a taster for what we do we have two tasks for you to attempt. Worksheet 1: This is a code breaker. All you need to do is answer the sum provided and then place the corresponding letter next to that answer (answers with their letters are given on the left hand side). The codes will complete this sentence: “MATHS IS ……………………………….. Worksheet 2: Now this one is more challenging. Easter Sunday is defined as the First Sunday after the first full moon after the 20th of March. Interestingly, the words "full moon" don't quite mean what we usually mean by a full moon - a night when the moon is full. If it did, Easter Sunday would have to be on different days in different parts of the world! Instead, some early church astronomers calculated a formula for the date of the full moon (a remarkably good formula, that's almost never wrong). So, when we talk about Easter and say "the first full moon", we actually mean the date of the full moon given by the formula. All you need to do is find the starting point which is at the top right of the flow diagram with (Year) next to it. Follow the flow diagram as instructed until you get to the “DAY” and “MONTH” answers on the top right. If you figure this one out then bring it into school in Sept and your teachers provide you with your very first school credits. Looking forward to seeing you all in September!!!
