YEAR 7 Design Technology

 Who’s who? Mr Earl
Head of Art and Design Technology Department: Mr Earl
Year 7 - Teachers: Mr Clark, Ms Balmer, Ms Tanner-Hammond.

 Our aims
We aim to give you the opportunity to design and make a range of products by developing your
skills in using a range of tools, equipment, machinery, processes and materials.
      - We have high expectations of all our students who are expected to engage in purposeful &
           productive work at every level.
      - Our classroom activities are designed to encourage lateral thinking, to strengthen skills and
to reinforce self-belief in our students.
      - We promote values of independence, skilfulness and perseverance.
      - We aim to provide an exciting learning environment that stimulates creativity.

 What skills will you learn?
 You will learn about:
A wide variety of materials, the impact their extraction, use and disposal has on the environment
and how designers use them to produce functional products.
A wide variety of tools, equipment and machinery, what each of them does, how to use them
effectively and safely and how to select the correct tool, piece of equipment or machine for the job.
Health and safety in the workshop, how to keep themselves and other safe when making products.
A range of communication techniques used by designers.
Subject specific vocabulary and technical terms used by designers and manufacturers.

Design Technology lessons are project based and designed to encourage students to build
confidence, competence and imagination when designing and making products. Their personal
approach will be valued and nurtured, and students will be encouraged to reflect on their work and
the work of others, developing analytical skills and the ability to critically evaluate a product or
 processes.

SUMMER TASK-
What to do over Summer Holidays:
  • Recycling Challenge – record what you put in your recycling bin for a week and discuss as
a family how you could reduce the amount of waste your household produces and how you
could reuse some of that waste before recycling it.
  • Bad Design, Good Design – Not all products are designed well, sometimes there is
something fundamentally wrong with a product which makes it hard or unpleasant to use.
Look around you household and find one product which is designed really well, and one
that is badly designed. Discuss why your family purchased the badly designed product and
what they would look for when they need to buy a new one.
  • MAKE! MAKE! MAKE! – Make stuff and practice your craft skills. Use things from the
recycling bin to make desk tidies, toys, bird feeders etc… Build dens outside. Cook at
home with the family. Help with the gardening. These activities all require you to problem
solve, think and get creative. They all involve using tools and equipment, from scissors to
kitchen whisks, tape to a spade!

Computing in Year 7
Introduction to the Department
All Key Stage 3 students have one lesson of Computing per fortnight. Students
also use laptops, computers and tablets in other subjects’ lessons. Mr Sisley is
Head of Computer Science, but the subject in Year 7 is taught by other teachers
too, such as Mr Rees and Mrs Walters.

What will you study in Computing?
Here are some of the topics that you will learn about in Year 7:

    • Components inside a computer
    • E-Safety
    • Programming
    • Using a spreadsheet
    • BBC Microbits

A task to try before September
Go to the Microsoft Make Code website, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/makecode
Choose one of the sections, such as ‘Minecraft’ or ‘Arcade’.

Follow some of the tutorials and see if you can make your own programs using this
website.

Be ready to show your new Computing teacher what you did in September.

Enrichment Opportunities
There is a Computing Club which runs after school once a week.

There are also lots of websites you can use to learn about Computing and coding. Here are some you
can use to get started:

    • Year 6 students have sometimes met Scratch before. It is a good place to start making your
own programs and games - https://scratch.mit.edu/
    • Try one of the Hour of Code activities at https://code.org/learn
    • https://www.kodugamelab.com/ lets you download the Kodu software. Developed by

An Introduction to our Department
The Maths curriculum at KS3 focuses on the extension and development of skills first explored at
KS2. You will be encouraged to develop and improve your Mathematical reasoning and challenged to
apply your Mathematical knowledge to real world examples. Problem solving will form a large part
of the curriculum and you will be encouraged to use the skills that you have been taught in order to
solve problems.

Equipment you will need in Maths
Many of the topics covered will require you to be familiar using mathematical
equipment. We therefore expect students to bring to every lesson a black and
red pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, protractor, compass (preferably with a locking
device) and a scientific calculator (we strongly recommend the Casio FX83GTX).

Topics to be covered in Year 7:
Below is our planned topics to be covered but at this is subject to change due to the effects of COVID

To help with your learning we hold two sessions after school every week in order to help anyone
who is struggling with certain topics or who have had a good attempt at their homework and is
struggling. Numerous Maths teachers are available in these sessions to offer help. We will always
encourage any of our students to attend.
Enrichment in year 7:
Every year we hold the Junior Maths Challenge which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision
of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The
problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most
are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

Two tasks to try before September:
As a taster for what we do we have two tasks for you to attempt.

Worksheet 1: This is a code breaker. All you need to do is answer the sum provided and then place
the corresponding letter next to that answer (answers with their letters are given on the left hand
side). The codes will complete this sentence:

“MATHS IS ………………………………..

Worksheet 2: Now this one is more challenging.

Easter Sunday is defined as the First Sunday after the first full moon after the 20th of March.
Interestingly, the words "full moon" don't quite mean what we usually mean by a full moon - a night
when the moon is full. If it did, Easter Sunday would have to be on different days in different parts of
the world! Instead, some early church astronomers calculated a formula for the date of the full
moon (a remarkably good formula, that's almost never wrong). So, when we talk about Easter and
say "the first full moon", we actually mean the date of the full moon given by the formula.

All you need to do is find the starting point which is at the top right of the flow diagram with (Year)
next to it. Follow the flow diagram as instructed until you get to the “DAY” and “MONTH” answers
on the top right.

If you figure this one out then bring it into school in Sept and your teachers provide you with your
very first school credits.

Looking forward to seeing you all in September!!!

MFL Department
Performing Arts in Year 7
Introduction to the Department

All Key Stage 3 students have two lessons of Performing Arts per week. Dance, Drama and Music are taught on a carousel with
technology-based subjects and are taught in individual disciplines for six weeks. Students then rotate on to the next technology
subject or Performing Arts discipline.

What will you study in Dance?
Stimulus: Aladdin ‘A Friend Like Me’
Students will learn about theme and stimulus and how movement and choreography help to tell the story of the Genie trying to
escape the lamp! Students will learn a set phrase that is practiced in small groups, thereafter students explore ways to create their
own choreography related to the theme, that come together to make a final group piece. The genre of the study is a hybrid of
styles including some contemporary and musical theatre movement. Students will also learn about a range of performing and
technical skills related to performing arts and Dance, in addition to the importance of warming-up and cooling down.

Extra-curricular provision
Year 7 Dance Club and Flash Mob: term 3 onwards

Preparatory work
Watch the film Aladdin to gain an understanding of the storyline. Create a poster or review about the film to entice an audience
to come and watch the performance.

What will you study in Drama?
Stimulus: Oliver Twist
Students will explore theatre through the story of Oliver Twist, engaging with a range of new dramatic elements, as well as learning
to write scripts and devising their own performances. Students will also learn about Victorian London and the workhouses
throughout this historic time. Students will participate in group work in addition to some paired work which promotes the
development of confidence, speaking in front of others, acting, characterisation, design and script writing. In addition, students
study some backstage roles and learn how to create a supportive team environment when creating theatre.

Extra-curricular provision
Youth theatre- All year groups: Term 1 onwards

Preparatory work
Watch the musical video of Oliver Twist 1968 to gain an understanding of the storyline. Create a poster of the character you most
like, think about what their costume looks like and add annotations about their personality.

What will you study in Music?
Stimulus: The Lion King 'I Just Can't Wait To Be King'
Students learn how to perform as part of a musical ensemble using a range of different instruments such as: the bass guitar,
piano, drums, vocals or can add their own instrument to the band if they have peripatetic lessons, for instance on the guitar or
flute. Students learn to perform as one part of an ensemble and practise the fundamental musical skills necessary to perform in
a fluent and engaging way.

Extra-Curricular provision
BeHeard choir takes place on Wednesdays after school in Mu1 until 4.15.

Preparatory work
Write about your favourite band/artist/piece of music and explain why you love it and how it makes you feel.
Personal Development in Year 7

Introduction to the Department
You may not have heard of Personal Development before, but essentially you will develop
knowledge and a variety of skills that will help you stay safe and live life to its fullest. Not
only do we look at how to stay safe in the real world, we also look at online life and discuss how
great the internet and social media when used correctly and it can open up new possibilities
for us.

Miss Miller is Head of Personal Development but there are lots of other
teachers who teach this subject too.

What will you study in Personal Development?
Here are some of the topics that you will learn about in Year 7:

   • Road Safety
   • Anti-bullying and being an upstander
   • Being safe online
   • Relationships, Sex and Health education
   • How to sustain positive mental health and
       wellbeing
   • Careers

A task to try before September:
You may wish to create a poster that clearly shows all the ways a person can look after their
mental health. It may be you have been given some tips by your primary school already during
lockdown, or perhaps you might want to use this website to help you:
https://youngminds.org.uk/resources/school-resources/wellbeing-activity-calendar-and-
games/
Philosophy, Religion and Ethics
All students at Key Stage 3 have two Philosophy Religion and Ethics lessons a
fortnight. Together we have the chance to explore the different ways people
have tried to understand the world around them. We will explore a number of
interesting questions, from: what does it mean to be a human being? Who
should be in charge of a country? Is there a right way to be a good person?

Mr Telford is head of the PRE department, but we have a number of other
wonderful teachers who will be very excited to great you next year and
explore the many different philosophical questions the world can make us ask.

What will you study in PRE?
    • What does it mean for something to ‘exist’?
    • What does it mean to be a ‘good person’?
    • What do Hindus believe and how does that change the way they live?
    • How do Jewish people understand the world?
    • Is the Bible still an important book today?

Want to get started? A task you can do before September.
Philosophy Religion and Ethics is all about asking questions about the world around you.

You can:

    • Watch a news item from Newsround: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround
    • Write down three questions that you have about the news item.
Or you can:

    • Discuss one of these questions with friends and family:
o If I paint over a window, is it still a winder?
o Is it always wrong to steal?
    • Write down a list of different points of view people have.

Enrichment opportunities
    • When you arrive at Beacon you will have the opportunity to join ‘The Last Word’ which is
our debate club. Here you will have the chance to discuss and debate the different issues.
We will also learn how to make stronger arguments.
