Steps to Healing A U C T I O N & G A L A April 7, 2018 | The Meydenbauer Center A NEW FUTURE OF Mobility
Who We Are Mobility Outreach International (MOi) is a non-political and secular, international non- profit organization (NGO), that has restored and enhanced mobility for children and adults in under-resourced health settings since 1989. MOi provides treatment to children with club- foot, prosthetic and orthotic services, physical rehabilitation, advocacy and orthopedic surgical outreach. Our programs and partnerships have directly reached over 30,000 patients, and indi- rectly served more than 100,000 people whose lives were affected by limb loss or deformity. We believe that when we strengthen the capacity of health workers, private clinicians, and the sup- ply chain that surrounds them, MOi plays a key role in fostering sustainability across the whole health system, dramatically increasing the qual- ity and access to care for persons with physical disabilities. Mission Statement To restore and enhance mobility for children and adults in under-resourced areas of the world.

From 1975 to 1980, Enrique Henao lived and performed in Seattle becoming one of the city’s best loved musicians and entertainers. Schooled in music by his father, also a gifted musician, Enrique performed in his first concert at the age of 13. Enrique has since played in more than 80 countries giving him a great knowledge of the world’s music, as well as a profound respect for and understanding of all people, making him a true citizen of the world. Enrique has been witness to the ravages of poverty in his homeland Colombia, here in the United States and in his international travels. Enrique’s commitment to use his talent to serve children is evident in his support of a children’s hospital in Manizales, Colombia and his numerous free benefit concerts on behalf of children’s aid organizations including: Hearts in Motion, Benaroya Cancer Research, Mobility Outreach International and many others. Henao has performed for heads of state and keeps thank-you notes from the White House and the Vatican. 6 | STEPS TO HEALING A NEW FUTURE OF MOBILITY A message from the Executive Director Welcome to the 2018 Steps to Healing Annual Dinner Auction and Gala! In 1989, we set out to help children and adults walk. Today, just as we did then, we focus on mobility solutions for people living with limb loss or deformity in low-resource health settings such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, Haiti, Sierra Leone, and soon in Senegal. We do this through programs and strategic partnerships that magnify our impact and leverage our resources serving people with physical disabilities. Our program data shows that our impact has grown far beyond its humble start. Today, we have directly helped over 30,000 people harness a new future of mobility. We know that when one person is physically limited, it impacts the entire household and their commu- nity. These courageous patients are making incredible strides toward living fuller, more economically independent, and normal lives, often eliminating dependency upon other household members for their daily needs. Indirectly, our programs have now served more than 100,000 people in five countries. Through our strategic partnerships with governments and other nonprofits and commu- nity-based organizations, we continue to invest in the local capacity building by providing technical training, materials, infrastructure development, and advocacy. Together, our pro- grams highlighted below, offer a more diverse set of life-changing interventions that impact not only the individual but the whole health system driving forward sustainable mobility solutions for years to come. Prosthetic and Orthotic Program: Trains technicians and clinicians to overcome supply chain barriers, and technical capacity, while attracting increased support from the ministries of health; Clubfoot Program: Raises awareness in underserved areas and trains health workers in low- cost treatment methods and brace manufacturing to end neglected Clubfoot as a physical disability; Mobility Repair Centers: Recruit and train people, most from the disabled community, to own and operate their small businesses, repairing mobility devices in semi-rural areas and expands access to care while dramatically reducing time out of work for patients and their families; Surgery Program: Provides necessary tools, materials, and training, to local surgeons and hospitals to enhance the quality of care received by orthopedic patients in under-served communities; Online Resource and Training Hub (brand-new pilot program): Brings technical training in mobility device creation and repair to clinicians via an e-learning environment accessible from a cell phone. Your support is vital to the continuation of this work. Thank you for your generosity, not only as a funder, but as a partner in these efforts which allow even the most marginalized and vulnerable people access to life-changing treatments. Your ongoing support will provide lasting impact and helps us to reach people in new regions of the world that desperately need our support. Together, with your help this evening, we can create, even more, Steps to Healing! With tremendous gratitude, Heidi R. Peterson, MPA, CFRE, CSPG Executive Director
8 | STEPS TO HEALING FERGUSON CHOUTE - THE STORY OF FIGGY BY STEVE KELLEY His smile, Ferguson Choute’s 10,000-watt, moon-sized grin that lit up the work- shop the second he came into Mobility Outreach International’s facility in Cap Hatien, Haiti, explains the transcendent, life-affirming quality of MOi. In 2010, an eight-year-old Figgy (he prefers to be called by his nickname) lost his right leg in the devastating earthquake, the epicenter of which was in his home- town of Leogane. I first met him last summer at a basketball camp in that town. That’s right a basketball camp. Figgy is a baller. Even while using a crutch for a right leg, he participated in all of the drills, doing figure-eight dribbling, shuf- fling up and down, right and left in defensive drills and shooting by switching his crutch from his right hand to his left hip, crossing the ball to his right hand, leaning on his crutch and firing. It’s a crossover dribble that Golden State Warriors’ superstar Steph Curry (one of Figgy’s idols) would be proud to call his own. After my return to Seattle from the camp I began searching for a way to get Figgy a prosthetic right leg. Without knowing it, this 15-year-old with an indefatigable spirit and that wicked crossover, led me to Seattle-based MOI and this remarkable workshop in the northern part of Haiti. In the heart of this steamy, frenetic city, across the street from Justinian Hospi- tal, MOi has established a lifeline for people who have lost limbs and for small children who were born with club feet. It is rebuilding hope for disabled people and their families. It has developed a solid working relationship with hospital staff and is improving the lives of Haitians who face daunting challenges. There is a holistic approach to MOi’s care. The kind of approach that will be sus- tainable long after the organization leaves the country in good hands. MOi sees the person first, not the disability. It sees the heart. Before they had met Figgy, Ray Pye, the director of program quality and emerging programs, who is based in Seattle, Mahamadou Soule, the in-coun- try prosthetics and orthotics consultant, and technologist Isadore Etandieu, established a phone and text relationship with Figgy’s family members. Rarely does anything happen quickly in Haiti. Getting Figgy a prosthetic leg demanded patience from the MOi staff. On a steamy spring day, Soule and Etandieu made the difficult, six-hour drive from Cap Hatien to the southern town of Leogane, 14 miles from Port au Prince. They met Figgy and his family, took all the necessary measurements from his right leg and casted the right residual limb.
STEPS TO HEALING | 9 Now, here comes the smile. Because he saw the commitment of Soule and Etan- dien, Figgy knew what he was walking into when he came to Cap Haitien after a grueling bus ride. MOi’s workshop is a long, narrow facility, attached to the hospital’s physical ther- apy department. MOi doubled the size of the workshop, housing the machines that help assemble and refine the prosthetics on one side and opening an aisle that includes the parallel bars where Figgy would take his first steps, on the other side. In the partitioned back is a makeshift room where casting is done for clubfoot patients and prosthetics are fitted. It is a nondescript place. The walls are painted a drab green and white. It can become sweltering in the afternoon as the sun bakes the building. But on any given day the workshop hums with the whirring of the machines and the crying of babies and Mahamadou’s laughter and high energy. Despite its look, this is a place that is fueled by new-found hope. And this is what Figgy walked into in late April. As he turned the corner and saw the place and felt the energy, that smile quickly spread across his face. Lives are changed here. Over the next two days, Figgy began the process of being fitted and re-fitted for his leg. The first day was tedious as the socket was refined and Figgy was given lessons on how to attach the prosthesis. There was a lot of sitting around. Ray, Mahamadou and Isadore understood this and explained what was happening before every refinement. The next day Figgy took his first steps, at first holding tightly to the parallel bars and looking down at his feet. Figgy is an above knee amputee. Last summer, he jetted around our basketball camp, using his crutch for a right leg. But with a new prosthesis movement will be slow going for quite a while. The care and honesty that Mahamadou and Isadore showed however, their admonitions that Figgy needed to use his prosthesis a little bit more every day to build up his confidence and with Figgy’s athleticism and will, there was very little doubt this would be a transformative mo- ment in his life. Later that second day, Mahamadou inge- niously brought a basketball and asked Figgy to dribble the ball while walking. The ball was the perfect teaching tool. As he dribbled, Figgy took his hands off the bars and raised his head, no longer looking down at his feet. He had a basketball in his hands, a smile on his face and an understanding of what all of this could mean to him. This is what MOi does across the globe. In this busy, narrow building it was introducing an excited and deserving teenager to the many new possi- bilities in his life.

12 | STEPS TO HEALING OUR PROGRAMS SURGICAL PROGRAM MOi founder Dr. Ernest Burgess recognized the benefit of establishing a cross- function- al, integrated orthopedic treatment team — surgeon(s), prosthetist/ orthotist, physical therapist, and patient — to promote the best possible outcome for the patient. Beginning in Vietnam in the early 1990s, orthopedic sur- geon-volunteers from Seattle began perform- ing in-country surgeries and trainings. In 2001, MOi partnered with the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) in sponsoring a month-long series of orthopedic surgeries and a weekend conference during which scientif- ic papers were shared with their Vietnamese counterparts. The partnership is now in its seventeenth year. Through their generous donation of their time and expertise, former POF Board member AOFAS Founder, Dr. Pierce Scranton and current MOi Board members Dr. Robert G. Veith, Dr. Mark Dales, and Dr. Maryse Bouchard have changed the lives of hundreds of patients in Vietnam. They are also credited with identifying the need to implement an in-country Ponseti clubfoot treatment program. CLUBFOOT PROGRAM MOi is a member of the Global Clubfoot Initia- tive (GCI), a group of organizations whose com- mon goal is a world without disability caused by clubfoot, through advocacy, education, and collaboration. GCI partners assist under-re- sourced countries in establishing a network of clubfoot treatment clinics that use the Ponseti method to correct clubfoot permanently, sav- ing each child from a life of neglected clubfoot disability. In partnership with local hospitals or clinics in each country, MOi assists with the training of doctors, nurses, therapists, and orthopedic technicians in the Ponseti meth- od, and supports local material sourcing and manufacturing of the foot abduction braces that are essential to the treatment’s success. MOi regularly monitors the quality of the treatment techniques being implemented, and assists local community counselors who educate new parents about the treat- ment through direct advocacy and outreach.
STEPS TO HEALING | 13 OUR PROGRAMS PROSTHETICS & ORTHOTICS PROGRAM Being able to walk offers independence and a better quality of life. The mission of MOi founder Dr. Ernest Burgess was to assist de- veloping countries with the skills and tools needed for treating and empowering the physically disabled to become more independent. Beginning in Vietnam, MOi (as Prosthetics Outreach Foundation), developed au- tomated clinical techniques that enabled local techni- cians to fit thousands of amputees with comfortable low-cost prostheses. MOi also assisted with the local development of the pros- thetic feet, knee joints, and brace components that are used to fabricate walking braces for polio victims. The lessons learned in Vietnam were then implemented in Ban- gladesh, Sierra Leone, and Haiti where locally-developed rehabil- itation technology was used and clinical techniques were taught to clinicians in each country. It is essential that each country have the necessary resources — a strong supply chain, dura- ble materials, basic rehabilitation products, and skilled techni- cians — in order to provide regular treatment services. Our P&O program works to strengthen permanent clinics and workshop facilities so that they are equipped with locally-sourced materi- als (to the degree possible) and the tools needed for long-term sustainability.
14 | STEPS TO HEALING OUR PROGRAMS MOBILITY REPAIR CENTER PROGRAM Several years ago, contributions from MOi donors were used to provide a vehicle for local medical and rehabilitation staff to conduct clinical and repair service outreach in remote provinc- es in Northern Vietnam. Local staff travelled thousands of miles over rugged terrain to bring services to these areas. Without this access — to repairs, adjustments, or replacement of broken parts — a physically disabled person’s mobility will be severely limited, or may cease entirely. Later, MOi provided a vehicle to Makeni Hospital in Sierra Leone for similar mobile outreach services. Monitoring and evaluation of the program revealed that many of the services provided were simple repairs and or replacements of worn out components. To better meet this need, we initiated a Mobility Repair Center (MRC) program — a network of small, privately-owned and operated businesses which offer repair ser- vices and replacement parts. MOi assists with the construction of the small workshops, and the recruitment of the appropriate entrepreneurs (many from the physically disabled community themselves) to receive training on device repair. To date, eight MRC workshops are actively functioning, and we are working toward expansion into new areas in the year ahead.
STEPS TO HEALING | 15 OUR PROGRAMS ONLINE RESOURCE TRAINING HUB (PILOT PROGRAM) To continue building upon our lessons learned through our P&O, and MRC programs, it has become clear that there is a strong need for training that can be accessed through hand- held mobile devices. To address this need, we received a two- year grant for a brand-new pilot program launched in 2018, the Online Resource Training Hub, where web-based content is easily accessible to rehabilitation professionals when they need it; where they need it. It will teach people casting techniques, socket fabrication, prosthetic alignment for artificial limbs, gait therapy, wheelchair repair and resolve gaps in the supply chain. The new platform will house training materials, resources, and short “how-to” video clips, that people can view from any com- puter, tablet, or personal cell phone even in low bandwidth settings. This collection of online, instructional content will align with guidelines by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) and be approved by MOi. User data will be tracked so that we can monitor and evaluate user progress and we envision that it will one day help prepare users with updated techniques through continuing education and certification. We hope to expand this into “physical hubs” in targeted locations after the pilot phase has been completed.

22 | STEPS TO HEALING PATIENT STORY ABASS FAMARA After losing his leg in a motorcycle accident in Sierra Leone, Abass Famara spent the first year after the accident on crutches. He had to stop farming, stop driving, and stop practicing mar- tial arts. His brother adjusted his own work schedule in order to be able to drive Abass to and from appointments. With support from Mobility Repair Center Owner and Technician, John Angel, Abass received a prosthesis with a customized foot that allows him to continue practicing martial arts and get back into his field where he grows rice, potatoes, and cassava. He’s had to ad- just which leg he starts with in his practice as he builds strength and comfort with the prosthetic, but his confidence has lifted now that he can practice and potentially compete again. His proximity to a Mobility Repair Center (MRC) has allowed the cus- tomization of a foot and leg which allows him to continue doing what he loves, without lengthy travel to a faraway prosthetic workshop, means that and can still provide for his family.
e Did you know? f The number of people living with disabilities outranks the total number of global refugees.
24 | STEPS TO HEALING MAKE-A-DIFFERENCE MOI Board Member, Maryse Bouchard, M.D. Our Board Member, Dr. Maryse Bouchard, will address you this evening not only in her role as MOi Board Member, but also as a new volun- teer, active on MOi‘s Surgical Outreach Team who donates her time to perform surgeries and to advocate for MOi’s mission; to restore and enhance mobility in under-resourced areas of the world. Tonight Dr. Bouchard will share with you the challenges faced by people in low resource health settings, and how her recent visits to Vietnam inspire her to continue investing in MOi’s suite of services. She will speak briefly about her efforts to strengthen the Vietnam Clubfoot Program, and share the successes of MOi’s Mobility Repair Center (MRC) pro- gram. You’ll learn more about our plans for growth in the year ahead, including expansion of our global Prosthetics & Orthotics Program into Senegal and about our new pilot program, in which we will launch our first ever Online Resource and Training Hub where technicians and clinicians around the world, can access valuable online training content directly from their cell phones and tablets to advance their skills and better serve people living with disabilities. Aleah Davidsen, Student Advocate for MOi Next you’ll hear from Aleah Davidsen. June 3rd is World Clubfoot Day, and last year when MOi promoted our support and engagement in the Global Clubfoot Initiative on facebook, we received a call from a pas- sionate young woman in Boston, named Aleah. Tonight, she will share with you her personal experience with clubfoot, and why she believes all of us can make a transformational difference for children around the world who can avoid a lifetime of social exclusion and disability with inexpensive treatment made possible by MOi. In her words, “Every child deserves to have the same active life and opportunities that I had, regardless of financial situation or origin of birth. A child’s po- tential should never be squandered by correctable physical limitations, and a clubfoot should not be given the power to take hold of someone’s capabilities or livelihood. In this way, MOi’s work is indispensable in the pursuit for a world without clubfoot as a disability, especially in areas of the world with fewer health resources.” She is a strong advocate and inspirational example of how passionate people like YOU CAN HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
STEPS TO HEALING | 25 CLUBFOOT PATIENTS IN VIETNAM It is through your generosity that MOi will be able to help families like these take sustainable Steps to Healing. Your monetary gift tonight will truly Make A Difference!
