An Open Letter to George Lucas ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY: John Engstrom Now, I only had 3 things that I wanted to get done on the Mini before driving season began. I wanted to put an electric fan on it, I wanted to do an ignition upgrade and also on the list was getting a new High/Low beam switch, because the high beam part of it was not functioning. I had to do some cutting to get the fan in and along the way I also decided to get a lower radiator hose, So now, I get in it which was, as it turns out, not in stock so I had to wait awhile but no matter, since it was winter and I had to start it up. the time. Once the part came, I got the whole thing installed, along with a new thermostat ( it's one of those, "might as well as long as your there" sort of things). Fan works (check) So, Check the first thing off the list. Ignition works (check) I then got to the ignition upgrade, I upgraded to a capacitive discharge ignition.....there were some lights work.... wait a problems but after a fashion I was able to work through them. Mounting the box was one large challenge minute, wait a minute... but I managed to find a place. Then there was the wiring to the distributor, but after a few tries, I got that alright. something isn’t So, Check the second thing off of the list. right here. Now, the high/low beam switch was not on the high priority part of the list since it only did not function in the high beam setting, although I could still flash my lights if needed be. A guy can get along easily without high beams. I thought that if nothing else, I could just leave that for a later job. I mean all I did was to park it for the winter, what could go wrong with that? So now, I get in it to start it up. Fan works (check) Ignition works (check) lights work.... wait a minute, wait a minute... something isn’t right here. The high beam switch is not on but the blue high beam indicator is lit. But, the high beam switch doesn't work? How come I have high beams? wait a minute, wait a minute..... I only have a high beam on the Right Hand light. I have nothing on the Left Hand light. Is the light burned out? I shut everything off. I thought about it for a minute, got out, looked at it (as if that would help me out). I got back in the car and turned the ignition switch back on but didn't start the car. I had one headlight on high beam and the other headlight was on but very dim. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 I n t e r M a r q u e M o n t h l y, A p r i l 2 0 1 0 PA G E 4
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 “Joseph, what have you done to me? All I did was put it away for the winter” I cried as I looked hopelessly towards the heavens. I waited, no answer, only silence. I tried again. This time I got my usual high beam but this time there was nothing from the other headlight. Completely out. What to start on first? It looks like I have two problems now. I wondered aloud “Let’s see, if I let it sit longer, would it heal itself or just get worse?” I figured that I had a 50/50 chance. I came back the following day with a hope in my heart and that was immediately dashed. Ok, well the first thing is the light. I took the light out and tried it in the other side. Worked like I wondered aloud a champ. Then I thought that the LH light looks like it has a bad ground or connection. I tried to trace the wiring but since the wiring had over spray on it from a previous paint job, it was all “Let’s see, if I let it sit the same color. Scratch that part. I then removed the light, cut the ground wire and relocated it longer, would it heal itself to a new spot. Put it all back together and Voila—everything worked. or just get worse?” Now, the high beams were gone and I had regular lighting again, just how could that have happened ? I guess it’s one of those things you just accept. I figured that I had Who knows......... well, you would know, it's your wiring system. But why pick on me? a 50/50 chance. After checking the high beam switch, it now worked the way it did when I parked it last year. Except now................... The lights though, come on whenever the ignition is in the on position, which means the the switch that was in the off position all winter, somehow failed in the on position by just sitting there. I started it up. How does this happen? Well Joseph, if you cannot hear my pleas, maybe I will send this letter over to George Lucas instead. He runs Industrial Light and Magic, which is sort of what category the wiring belongs to anyhow, especially the magic part. Sincerely yours.... A Crushing Wake-Up Call ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY: Keith Galberth Do you know where your pride and joy sleeps tonight? Really know?!! The owners of these classics didn’t! They knew the physical location, Scott County, MN; but not the physics of the location, an obviously improperly constructed 1970s vintage pole building which had weathered worse winters. But it had run out of time! This building contains 20 vehicles, several boats and recreational machines, and misc. other equipment. I did say “contains”; at least when these pictures were taken in February. If you are prone to sleepless nights and have to store your baby somewhere other than in your own comfy abode, then take heart. Winter should be over in a few weeks. As for next year, it would be prudent to check out the construction and history of your storage location. Also check out what else may be stored there that could spontaneously combust. Every few years I hear about a pole barn in the area, full of stored cars, that burns down. Think positively. These things don't normally happen. Direct from the Abingdon-on-Thames Works: The Morris Garage Band ARTICLE AND PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED BY: Jack Schneider The boys have cleaned the oil and grit from under their nails and have strapped on the tools of another trade. They are set to pull out acoustic versions of some great classic rock tunes from the likes of (coincidentally predominantly English groups) Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Emerson Lake & Palmer, U2, The Who and many others from this side of the pond. This is the only band brave enough to perform first and then rehearse, really! They're eager and ready to go on to the next performance. Seriously, Steve and Jack have had music interest and experience for decades but had never performed together until just recently. They talked on many occasions about the possibility of actually doing so. And it has happened. Surprising audiences and each other, it is working very well. The initial performance did occur before an official rehearsal, too. The two look very forward to upcoming opportunities to perform for your event. HOT WHEELS RACE NIGHT March 3; Fort Snelling Officers Club HOSTED BY: Minnesota Austin-Healey Club ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY: Gary Ronning The annual Hot Wheels racing competition took place again at the March meeting of the Minnesota Austin Healey Club. Tom Hazen did his usual great job of setting up the track, timing the runs, and presenting his valued Certificates to the winners. Many people took the opportunity to race their own models or borrow one from the “parking lot” provided by Hazen. Competition was fierce, but competitors were having fun. Winning Certificates were given to the following people with the four fastest times: Somehow, all the 1ST PLACE: Jeff Lumbard winners seem to be 2ND PLACE: Aaron Courteau race drivers of full 3RD PLACE: Mike Manser sized cars.Very interesting! 4TH PLACE: Randy Byboth 1 P.M., CHEROKEE PARK ON THE WEST SIDE IN ST. ATTENTION BRITISH CAR OWNERS! Are you looking for something to do on May 22nd but aren’t planning on attending the Inter-Marque Spring Kickoff? Why not bring your British car to the British Car Display at the Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games and enjoy a day of Scottish fun, entertainment, and enlightenment. We apologize for the scheduling mix-up but we think that we also, have planned a very enjoyable event for British car owners. We are including in the 2010 Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games, a display of up to 40 British cars representing cars that one might see now or might have seen in days gone by, on the roads and motorways of Scotland. The Fair and Games are to be held at the Dakota County Fairgrounds in Farmington on Saturday, May 22nd, 2010. We would love to have you display your car and be our guest for the day at the Fair & Games. Please visit our website to see all the wonderful things that will be going on. http://www.mnscottishfair.org/ http://www.mnscottishfair.org/culturalorganizations/carshow.html The Car Display is as it indicates, a display, not a competition. There will be no judging. You may stay by your car and chat with folks or wander all over the Fairgrounds and take full advantage of all that the Fair and Games have to offer. It’s entirely up to you. We would like your car to be in place by 8:30 AM and remain until 5:30 PM. We ask this because your car in the display is an integral part of the presentations of the Fair and not just part of a car show. You are cordially invited to leave your car in place and attend the Ceilidh in McCracken’s Pub on the Fairgrounds from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. As a thank you for your participation, we will provide you with two free passes to the Fair and Games. Please contact me if you have any questions and so that I can send you a registration packet and the free passes. RENDEZVOUS 2010 The Thunder Bay Vintage Sports Car Club INVITES YOU TO Wake the Giant At the 20th Annual Lake Superior Vintage Sports Car Rendezvous In Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada June 17th, 18th, 19th, 2010 Bring out your classic sports or touring car for a weekend of motoring fun and games. The Lake Superior Vintage Sports Car Rendezvous IN Thunder Bay This event was first held in Thunder Bay in 1991 with the support of the Austin Healey Club of Manitoba. Local efforts on the part of a few enthusiastic sports car owners yielded a great weekend (even though it rained) with 37 cars registered. Local interest continued to develop and the Thunder Bay Vintage Sports Car Club was formed the following year. Our American Austin Healey guests had such a great time that they decided to host the event in 1992 and it has since become an annual event. The event is currently being hosted on a rotating basis by various clubs on both sides of the border. In 2010, the event will be held at the Best Western Nor’Wester Resort Hotel on Highway 61 in Thunder Bay Ontario. Come celebrate 20 years of cross-border motoring. A gymkhana and rally are planned as well as tours of local points of interest including a trip to Russ Wanzuk’s museum of old racing cars and motoring memorabilia. A Friday night BBQ is planned, and perhaps you may find time to squeeze in a round of golf! Stay tuned! HEARTLAND VINTAGE RACING Heartland Vintage Racing with sponsorship from O'Reilly Auto Parts company will have a very major Vintage Race Event at Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kansas during August 19-20-21-22 of 2010. There will be a huge area for car club corrals within the Paddock area. Club members will be able to walk among the race cars and visit with the drivers and crew members. Watch the old cars (1972 and older) run the way they used to run. Eight groups of cars will run, one group immediately after another, all day long. See displays of old Indy Roadsters and others and watch those same cars as they turn exhibition laps on the 2.5 mile road course. Enjoy the song of the Offy’s. Any one of three huge earthen hills on three sides of the road course offer great views of the entire course. Get close to the noise and the action on the grass area near turn 11 while you enjoy the hot dogs etc. from the nearby concession stand. Visit all of the 50 or more vendors in vendor row including a large O'Reilly Auto Parts display. Listen to the band and its drum corps as they play the National Anthem on race Sunday while military aircraft fly over this huge facility. Want to participate in the action? Come early and enter the Performance Driving Experience (PDX) on August 19. This event only costs $100 and provides some classroom in the morning and then driving your own car on track the rest of the day. A licensed race car driver will be assigned to you as an instructor and he will bring you up to speed to the best of your ability and the cars ability. You will need to bring a helmet. The Vintage Race Cars (about 300 of them) will be doing test and tune on Thursday with practice and races on Friday and then races are all day on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday morning will rise and shine with the Bumble Bee Buzz of Vintage Formula V’s in their special race that we expect 50 to 60 cars to participate in. Just after lunch on Sunday we will hold the Kastner Cup Race which features only Triumph race cars. A huge turnout of entries is expected for this annual Triumph event. This race will be honored with a special military fly over. On Friday evening the race cars will be escorted from HPT to the State Capitol Building where they will be on display and Vintage Racing will be welcomed to the Heartland by the Mayor of Topeka and others. Your car club corral entry does not cost extra. Only a daily $10 admission charge per person will apply. A three day pass will be available for $25. Your corral spot will be marked off and a sign will indicate your clubs name. All we need is descriptive information about your club and the number of cars that will participate. Please complete the attached form and it to secure your reservation. Mail to: Heartland Vintage Racing, 116 Flynn Road, Suite A, Branson, MO 65616. We do suggest that your members arrive on Thursday the 19th or no later than during the day on the 20th. Arrive on the 18th if they wish to participate in the PDX. There will be a people’s choice award given to the club selected as the Best Display and with over 5000 spectators on hand this should present quite a challenge and an honor to receive. There are many other activities to participate in and these will show up on our web page shortly. The web page is constantly being updated so check it out at www.heartlandvintageracing.com . Thanks, and we sure look forward to seeing you at this great event. Bill Rinke President - HVR I n t e r M a r q u e M o n t h l y, A p r i l 2 0 1 0 PA G E 2 8
