Employees are encouraged to bring desserts even if they do not want to enter into the contest. NEW FACES IN THE CRC Staff members in the CRC are happy to have two more smiling faces added to our ranks. Katharine Hijar and Emily Powell Bera both started in the last couple weeks and are quickly learning the ropes. Katharine’s job as an Assistant Curator funded by a Luce Foundation grant is to create a new exhibit based upon the Museum’s collection. The Sea as Muse is her exhibit title and she will be sounding the depths of the collections to find appropriate items in the silver and furniture collections and elsewhere to outfit this exhibit that will highlight immigrant craftsmen. Katharine comes to us from her position as Assistant Professor of U.S. and Digital History at the California State University, San Marcos. Emily, our new Collections Assistant, is not new to Mystic Seaport. She was part of Elysa Engelman’s Internship class in 2010. Obviously inspired by her work with Elysa, Emily has focused on maritime history and collections care and spent the last four years in Richmond, Virginia at the Naval History and Heritage Command Collections Management Facility, immersed in their large-scale collections-based Artifact Baseline Reset (ABR) project. We are excited to have two more experienced professionals share their talents with us at Mystic Seaport Museum. -Paul O’Pecko
FIRST THURSDAY AUGUST 1 All staff and volunteers are invited to join us as Dayne Rugh, Director of Education for Slater Memorial Museum (at Norwich Free Academy) returns to Mystic Seaport Museum as our August presenter. This presentation explores the life and service of the only vessel of its kind built in Connecticut as well as how the ship and Norwich contributed to fighting the British on the high seas. Coffee and donuts will be served at 8:30 am and the presentation begins at 9 am in the Olin Stephens Reading Room on the 3rd floor of the Stillman Building. Trained as an industrial designer and metalsmith, he designs products that are distributed to gift stores, museum stores, galleries and catalogs throughout the U.S. and overseas. Following Matthew’s talk will be a performance by the New London Big Band, a 17-piece jazz orchestra that plays a mix of classic jazz standards, upbeat dance tunes, and original music by band members, and regularly features instrumental and vocal soloists. MYSTIC LUXURY CINEMAS SUMMER STAFF PROMOTION Mystic Luxury Cinemas offers Mystic Seaport Museum Staff and Volunteers 2 for 1 tickets to two award- winning documentaries opening in the next few weeks. Simply show your badge at the box office. And make sure to thank them for their generous support! Maiden – Opening Friday July 12, for two weeks, Maiden is the story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook in charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World in 1989. Tracy’s inspirational dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up: she remortgaged her home and bought a secondhand boat, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line. Although blessed with tremendous self-belief Tracy was also beset by crippling doubts and was only able to make it through with the support of her remarkable crew. With their help she went on to shock the sport world and prove that women are very much the equal of men. https://www.mysticluxurycinemas.com/showtimes-trailers Sea of Shadows – Opening August 2nd. In the award-winning documentary SEA OF SHADOWS, from National Geographic, a multinational team of scientists, activists, journalists and undercover agents go up against drug cartels and illegal traffickers to save the most endangered whale on Earth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiFjJCUd9ro#action=share 184 PIZZERIA STAFF PROMOTION 184 Pizzeria – Members & Staff save $4 on a large pizza To celebrate summer, this July, our newest Corporate Member, I-84 Pizzeria, is happy to offer all Members, Staff and Volunteers of Mystic Seaport Museum $4 off a large pizza.
