Head Coaches Report Welcome back for 2021, I hope everyone had a “Talent is not a limited resource, it’s what great Christmas and New Year’s period with their you do with that Talent that counts” families. Aidan Withington (2010) I am very excited about this year and have many new things on the go, so watch out for the “Hard work beats talent when talent information coming out shortly. doesn’t work hard” It has been great to see so many in the pool training from all levels in the club and I am look Tim Notke (High school basketball coach) forward to seeing the swimmers and families that have not yet returned. We had our first parent meeting with the Age, Youth and Intermediate parents on the 28th January. I will be aiming to do more of these and will also include more groups/have some for other groups. Next one will be on Monday 15th February at 6:15pm in the clubrooms and will be for swimmers in the Junior Olympians, Intermediate, Age and Youth. This will include information about a new programme that we will be introducing at the start of March. We had a couple of swim meets during January, including our very own Summer Sizzler and big thank you to all swimmers, families and officials that helped out during this meet. We also had a group of 13 swimmers who are targeting towards New Zealand Division 2 and Age Group attend a 3 day meet in Wellington. This was a great opportunity for these swimmers to get long course racing at a 3 day meet with heats and finals. Our swimmers really lifted their standards and performed very well. 78% personal best times in heat swims and 67% swimmers were faster in the finals. I can honestly say this was the best team I have ever been away with as coach (since 2005), not only in their performance, but how well they conducted themselves for the Aidan duration of the trip. A big thanks to Rachel Theo for giving up her time to be our Team Manager. Keep working hard and aspiring towards your goals.
Swim Rotorua are thrilled that NZCT are supporting us by helping fund our Head Coach – AIDAN WITHINGTON This support allows us to keep our coaching fees reasonable and to continue our community work, as well as providing high quality coaching from one of New Zealand’s leading coaches. Aidan Withington grew up in Invercargill, and swimming shaped his life both in and out of the pool – “It gave me the sense of discipline and the strong work ethic I needed to succeed in school and beyond. I’m very passionate about trying to develop Swim Rotorua athletes so they can succeed, in the same way that swimming helped me succeed at the same age.” • Aidan has now been with Swim Rotorua for a year. He kept the team on track during lockdown with daily workouts, quizzes and support. He manages our permanent coaches Photo: Stephen Parker, Daily Post Tara Watt and Tiana Hill and oversees all the programmes at the Club. He is one of the top young coaches in the country! • Coached 20 Swim Rotorua athletes to place in the top twenty in the country in the 2020 NZ Short Course Series including: o Athletes placing in the top twenty in every single age group; o Ariel Muchirahondo taking 1st place in 8 events in the 11 yr old age group, o Kai Jung Ishida taking 2 1sts, 1 2nd and 3 3rds, and Hone Curtis taking a 1st and 2nd in the same age group; o Kaia Joyce taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 12 yr girls age group; o Paddy Baylis placing 4th and 7th and David Boles placing 10th in Open Age category. • Prior to Swim Rotorua Aidan was Capital Swimming Club’s Age/Youth Coach for four years, working with one of New Zealand’s top coaches, Gary Hollywood. • Aidan coached Paralympian Mary Fisher to the S11 100m Butterfly world record. • Before that he was Head Coach at Central Hawkes Bay Swimming Club for six years, coaching them to be the top NZ junior team in 2010. • Before that Aidan was Swimming Southland Development Officer and Coach, ran learn to swim programs as well as supervising school swimming and training school teachers.
