George Keating Memorial Scholarship Family and friends of George Keating, a dear friend and long-time member of the book community, have gotten together to create a George Keating Memorial Scholarship in his honor. This scholarship fund will be used each year to help booksellers from NAIBA, SIBA and NEIBA in professional development. It can be used to fund travel and registration fees to any of the regional's meetings and events. The application for NAIBA booksellers will open on April 1 and close April 15. Watch this newsletter for that announcement. Donate here to help our booksellers through the George Keating Memorial Scholarship. VAT Questions Answered Given the expansion of bookstores' marketplace in the pandemic, we want you to be aware that you need to sign up for a VAT number if shipping to the UK. Effective Jan 1, 2021, value added tax (VAT) must be collected for all goods entering the United Kingdom (UK). There will be a 20% VAT rate on goods valued up to £135 (about $180 USD), which you must collect unless your online marketplace is already collecting it. Current procedures for goods valued over £135 remain the same. To prevent your UK shipments from being delayed, held, or returned by UK customs in 2021, please take the following steps: 1. Register for a VAT number with the UK: https://www.gov.uk/vat-registration 2. Collect VAT at the time of purchase. 3. Make quarterly VAT return payments to the UK. In addition, you should include your VAT number on your customs declarations. This process will vary depending on your shipping software. How to register for VAT Most businesses can register online - including partnerships and a group of companies registering under one VAT number. By doing this you’ll register for VAT and create a VAT online account (sometimes known as a ‘Government Gateway account’). You need this to submit your VAT Returns to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). What you need to know You need to provide details like your turnover, business activity and bank details. Your registration date is known as your ‘effective date of registration’. You’ll have to pay HMRC any VAT due from this date. You do not need to authorize an agent to register you for VAT. ABA Updates Booksellers can visit the ABA Events Calendar on BookWeb.org for the coming months' events, including Coffee Breaks, Marketing and Technology Meetups, institutes, virtual education, and more. NAIBAhood Review With "Dear Senthuran" Akwaeke Emezi Dear Senthuran : A Black defiantly stakes their claim to a place in a new Spirit Memoir literary canon, and they could not be more Akwaeke Emezi justified. Emezi's writing is always gorgeous, (Riverhead Books/Penguin) tight, and deeply revealing. In this memoir 9780593329191 they reveal the open wounds of navigating the fraught world as something/someone "other"
and stand with that, hurt, but not broken, holding a place for those who will follow. They shine a strobe light on the fickle world of publishing and leave it exposed for all to see. They reveal so much and give away nothing that is vital to their survival. It's a miraculous feat, and one that will mean so much to so many.
