Page 1 of 17 Tour #: 2109267FZ Spain, France, Italy, & Switzerland The Travel Club at The Centre for Learning @ HOME is organizing an April, 2021, school trip to Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland. The basic premise of the Travel Club is that the “World is our Classroom.” There is no better way to learn about globalization, culture, nationalism, art, architecture, geography, sociology, faith, and history than to experience the world firsthand. Yes, we will be visiting Barcelona pictured here. This will be the 10th time I have personally led international tours for the Centre for Learning@HOME. The number of teacher chaperones will be determined by the number of students traveling. We will be employing the services of Education First Tours (EF Tours) and will be traveling over Easter break (March 30- April 9, 2021). T h i s tour is available for students in Grades 9 to 12. Each day of this 11-day journey will leave students inspired- from the tranquility of lakes Lucerne and Como, to the Mediterranean shores of Cinque Terre and Nice, to the culture and architecture of Provence and Barcelona. The purpose of this document is to provide trip details so you can make an informed decision whether or not you would like to join us. The cost of this tour for students is $3950.00. This amount is paid directly to EF Tours and includes all gratuities and EF Tours Global Protection Insurance Plan as well as a host of other items. See page 16 for a detailed list called “Everything you Get.” EF Tours has a wealth of experience with international travel for students. I will send each student an EF Tours backpack When our group arrives in Europe everything is taken care of so we can relax and enjoy the experience. Our full-time Tour Director is with our group around the clock, handling local transportation, hotels, and meals while also providing their own insight into the local history and culture. Expert local guides will lead your group on sightseeing tours, providing detailed views of history, art, architecture or anything you may have a question about. Page 3 of 17 Day-by-Day Itinerary Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland/ TOUR SCHEDULE March 30- April 9, 2021 Day 1: Flight to Zurich, Switzerland Day 2: Arrive in Zurich The Tour Director will lead a bus and walking tour in Zurich prior to our departure to Lucerne. See Zurich below. Day 3: Lucerne, Switzerland Swiss Folklore Evening The Tour Director will lead group on a walking tour to see tour of Lucerne. After lunch students will have Discovery time. In the evening we will have a special event, a Swiss Folklore Evening. With outstanding food and the unique Swiss atmosphere, you can enjoy original Swiss folklore. Traditional Swiss customs including alphorns, cowbells, national costumes, flag throwing and yodeling, and traditional Swiss music will make this an unforgettable experience, a unique combination of good food, music and fun. Page 4 of 17 Swiss Folklore Evening Join us for a bit of Swiss tradition. You’ll enjoy a delicious meal, including the chance to try fondue—the Swiss national dish! Page 5 of 17 Day 4: Lucerne - Lake Como - Cinque Terre Our Tour Director will lead the group on a walking tour to see the Lion Monument and then transfer to Lake Como, Italy. He/she will then walk the group to a central location and give discovery time for sightseeing and lunch. The Como Cathedral is free to enter (see photo below right); shoulders and legs must be covered. Afternoon: Continue to hotel in the Cinque Terre region. Evening: Dinner at the hotel. Page 6 of 17 Day 5: Cinque Terre Transfer to La Spezia train station and explore the Cinque Terre by train. The Tour Director will take the group to two villages where we will have discovery time in each. Afternoon: Discovery time in the villages Evening: Return to the hotel for dinner. Page 7 of 17 Day 6: Cinque Terre & French Riviera Sightseeing tour in Monaco. Promenade des Anglais below Morning: Transfer to Monaco. The Tour Director will lead a sightseeing tour in Monaco. Discovery time until lunch. Afternoon: Nice. The Tour Director will lead a walking tour of Nice. Discovery time in the afternoon. Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant. Page 8 of 17 Day 7: French Riviera & Provence, France The French Riviera (or Côte d'Azur) is the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France. It includes famously glamorous beach resorts such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes, and the independent microstate of Monaco. A health retreat in the 18th century, the area later attracted aristocrats, artists and the 1960s "jet set." Today it is an established holiday destination, with paths connecting many coastal villages and towns. Transfer to Provence | Walking tour of Avignon/Papal Palace Morning: Transfer to Provence. Page 9 of 17 Papal Palace of Avignon, France The Papal Palace is an historical palace located in Avignon, Southern France. It is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Once a fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. Page 10 of 17 Day 8: Provence, France Visit Pont du Gard Roman built Aqueduct Mighty Aqueduct Bridge rising over 3 well- preserved arched tiers, built by 1st-century Romans. Morning: Pont du Gard for discovery time and lunch. Walking tour of Nimes Afternoon: Go to Nimes for a walking tour led by our tour guide ending at the amphitheater for a visit. The Arena of Nîmes is a Roman amphitheater, situated in this French city of Nîmes. Built around AD 70 it can sit 12,000 handkerchief-waving spectators in the city’s first-century Roman amphitheater. During Roman times, spectators enjoyed both gladiator fights and Venatio (animal hunts) in the amphitheater. The “half-time show” at these events was typically a public stoning of condemned criminals. An art lover’s dream city and the place where masters like Miró, Picasso, and Dalí flourished. Take a walking tour of Barcelona: Las Ramblas. Page 12 of 17 Day 10: Barcelona Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, is known for its art and architecture. The fantastical Sagrada Família church and other modernist landmarks designed by Antoni Gaudí dot the city. Museu Picasso and Fundació Joan Miró feature modern art by their namesakes. The city includes several Roman archaeological sites. Morning: Depart hotel after breakfast with a local guide for sightseeing tour of Barcelona. Visit Parque Guell and view the exterior of la Sagrada Familia. Continue on to Montjuic on the bus with a stop for a panoramic vista of Barcelona. Day 11: Transfer to Barcelona airport *Participants are not permitted to consume, purchase, or possess alcohol, non-prescription drugs, marijuana/cannabis or tobacco of any kind* There are no tour extensions for students. We must depart from Calgary and return to Calgary together as one group. We will attend Mass over Easter weekend. The cost of this tour for students in grades 9 to 12 is $3950.00.
