SOUTH ISLAND QUILTERS TOUR 10 nights from $4565.00 Including flights ex Napier return Day 1: Thursday 02 September 2021: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH (LD) 1.25 pm Arrive Christchurch Airport, where you will be met by your driver/guide. Start your tour with High Tea at the Penny Black Victorian Tearoom at The Tannery. Afterwards there is time for some boutique shopping. The Tannery has a range of exciting and unique shops in an amazing Christchurch shopping destination covering fashion, gifts, homewares, recreation and leisure, crafts, dining, health & beauty, and postal services. You’ll be surprised and amazed at the spectacular architecture of the Tannery complex, resurrected from the historic Victorian Tannery buildings now accommodating owner operated and specialist shops you won’t see anywhere else. The Tannery is the place for individuals to shop, people who love quality, like to make ethical purchases, and want to support crafts and artisans. End your day with a sightseeing tour of the city - highlights include the River Avon, the Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery; the ‘Cardboard Cathedral’; Bridge of Remembrance; the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial and the Art Deco New Regent Street. This evening experience the Christchurch Tramway Restaurant, a colonial style dining tram experience, treating you to the finest service, cuisine and beverages New Zealand has to offer. Incorporate fabulous dining with a sightseeing tour showcasing Christchurch’s inner city vibrancy and heritage – truly a mix of the old and the new. Tram 411 was built in Melbourne, Australia in 1927 and ran until 1982. The tram was then refurbished and shipped to Christchurch in 1999 and began operating as the Christchurch Tramway Restaurant in 2000. Accommodation: Quality Hotel Elms Day 2: Friday 03 September 2021: CHRISTCHURCH / TWIZEL (BLD) Travel down the eastern coastline to the town of Ashburton and Ashford Village. Visit the Ashford Store, your one stop shop for textile supplies, based at the home of Ashford Wheels and Looms – manufacturers of the world-famous spinning wheels and weaving looms. Then visit Annie’s Country Quilt Store. Annie's Country Quilt Store is based in a 100 year old pioneer cottage on the Main South Road in Tinwald, on the outskirts of Ashburton. The cottage lends itself well to the country theme and antiques and collectibles which feature in the shop alongside an excellent range of patchwork fabrics, DMC cotton stitcheries, gifts and patterns sourced from all over the world. Then visit Akaunui Historic House and Gardens. The Akaunui garden was originally designed by Alfred Buxton, established over 100 years ago. During the last 15 years major developments have taken place and the garden now covers 6 hectares and includes magnificent old trees (both native and exotic) and a wide variety of recently planted species. The garden complements the imposing century old double storey brick homestead where you will enjoy lunch today. Continue on to the small rural service town of Geraldine, for a visit to Lilla's Lace Museum. Lillia's Lace Museum houses a large private collection of antique lace in various forms and types, some unique to New Zealand and also relating to New Zealand's history. Tools and other items relating to threads, weaving, spinning and sewing can also be seen. Continue on to the shores of the stunning, glacier-fed Lake Tekapo, where you can view the solitary Church of
the Good Shepherd and take in the sights of the spectacular Southern Alps. Continue on to the small town of Twizel. Dinner at the hotel. Accommodation: Mackenzie Country Hotel, Twizel Day 3: Saturday 04 September 2021: TWIZEL / QUEENSTOWN (BD) Rowan tree quilt gallery and workshop Continue through the quaint village of Omarama, traveling across the barren terrain of the Lindis Pass and the picturesque Otago countryside to the delightful lakeside town of Wanaka. Travel through the fruit growing region around Cromwell to the lakeside resort town of Queenstown. This weekend the Queenstown Quilters & Patchworkers group are holding a weekend workshop. Participants usually work on their own projects, but it is a wonderful time for them to complete group projects and charity quilts. Join the group for their workshop this afternoon, followed by dinner. Accommodation: Scenic Suites Queenstown Day 4: Sunday 05 September 2021: QUEENSTOWN (B) Today is free for you to visit the Quilting Workshop again, or you can have time at leisure in Queenstown. Accommodation: Scenic Suites Queenstown At the Quilting workshop are the fees all paid for this event and do we have a more detail programme of what the event is all about Day 5: Monday 06 September 2021: QUEENSTOWN (BL) This morning travel out to Arrowtown. The heart of Arrowtown’s history is Buckingham Street, a procession of small town heritage buildings that stretch into a tree lined avenue of tiny miners’ cottages. A visit to Arrowtown is not complete without a step into The Stitching Post - a little slice of heaven for all quilters, embroiderers, knitters and crocheters. Enjoy lunch at Akarua Wines & Kitchen by Artisan. The food coming from their kitchen is has a focus on quality, taste and seasonality helped from Central Otago’s local growers. Enjoy lunch and a glass of wine looking over the beautiful garden setting and the historic cottage which they have lovingly restored. Returning to Queenstown, the remainder of the day is at leisure – you may like to take the gondola up to the top of Bob’s Peak (additional cost). Accommodation: Scenic Suites Queenstown Day 6: Tuesday 07 September 2021: MILFORD SOUND EXCURSION (BLD) Depart Queenstown this morning for a full day excursion to Milford Sound. Travel around Lake Wakatipu and through Te Anau and the Fiordland National Park to Milford Sound. Fiordland National Park, part of the UNESCO Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area is one of the great wilderness areas of the Southern Hemisphere. The scenery is spectacular with lofty mountains and deep valleys carved out by Ice Age glaciers. There are clear rushing streams and leaping waterfalls set in magnificent native rainforest. Rain or shine, the journey into Milford Sound captivates even the most seasoned traveller. At Milford Sound board a comfortable vessel for a scenic cruise down Milford Sound past towering Mitre Peak to the Tasman Sea. The Sound is dominated by the grandeur of Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls and seals
and dolphins are often seen in the clear waters of the fiord. Picnic lunch served on board. At the conclusion of your cruise, reboard the coach and retrace your journey to Te Anau. On arrival back in Te Anau, visit theFiordland Cinema. Ata Whenua – Shadowland (also known as Fiordland on Film) is a breath-taking cinematic film showcasing Fiordland’s stunning scenery. Filmed by owner operator Kim Hollows of Fiordland Helicopters this film is an experience in itself. Thirty-five minutes in length and narrated by Sir Tipene O’Regan of Ngai Tahu this film is not to be missed while visiting Te Anau. You may like to take a glass of Fiordland Pinot Noir in with you (own cost) from the adjacent Black Dog Bar. Dinner at the hotel this evening. Accommodation: Distinction Luxmore Hotel Lake Te Anau Day 7: Wednesday 08 September 2021: TE ANAU / DUNEDIN (B) Travel across the rolling farmland of Southland and Otago. A striking feature of this area is the large number of deer farms that are easily seen from the road. The road travels through a number of small country towns before crossing the fast flowing Clutha River and heading north into Dunedin. The city was established by settlers from the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the 1840’s and is proud of its Scottish heritage. The afternoon is at leisure to relax at the hotel or enjoy a walk around the city. Accommodation: Scenic Hotel Southern Cross Day 8: Thursday 09 September 2021: DUNEDIN (BD) This morning the Otago Embroiderers group meet from 9.45am until 11. 45 am for stitching, chatting and coffee/tea, in the Age Concern building, lower Octagon. They would welcome a visit from the Embroiders in the group (and any others interested!) They will look into organising a display of some of their members work and hope you will bring along your stitching items they may have with them and stitch along with us if you would like. This afternoon enjoy an orientation tour of Dunedin - see the University of Otago with its historic blue stone buildings on the banks of the Leith River. Travel through the CBD along George and Princes Streets and through the Octagon which features the historic Town Hall and St Pauls Anglican Cathedral and a statue of the Scottish poet Robbie Burns. Your tour includes a visit to Toitū Otago Settlers Museum - a museum of social history dedicated to telling the story of the people of Dunedin and the surrounding area, whose character, culture, technology, art, fashion and transport shaped New Zealand’s first great city. Here you can view the Material Culture Collection. From the 1860s to the 1980s, Dunedin rose and fell as a centre for clothing and textile manufacturing and retailing in New Zealand. Material Culture delves into the rich collection of clothing and associated artefacts to portray various aspects of fashion and the fashion industry in Dunedin throughout the ages. Also visit historic Olveston House which was completed in 1907 and was a masterpiece of modernity in the Edwardian era, featuring central heating, an in-house telephone system and even heated towel rails. Olveston has been carefully preserved and now offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of a privileged family in the early 1900’s and the rich historical heritage of Dunedin.
This evening travel out to the Carey’s Bay Historic Hotel for an early dinner. For the knitters in the group, the Nautical Knitters (Port Chalmers Knitting Group) meet each Thursday at the Port Chalmers Library from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The remainder of the group will travel back into Dunedin to join the Quilters and Patchworkers of Otago at their monthly meeting. At the meetings they also have a speaker and/or an activity, their extensive library is open, there’s members show and tell, and a number of raffles for sale. The evening ends with a cuppa and a chat. The group meets in the Technology Block at Bayfield High School from 7.30pm – 9.00pm. Doors open at 7.15pm. Accommodation: Scenic Hotel Southern Cross Day 9: Friday 10 September 2021: DUNEDIN / OAMARU (BD) Depart Dunedin travelling north across the Otago Hills, stopping at Moeraki see the fascinating giant marble like boulders on the beach. Continue on to Oamaru, which boasts the country’s oldest public gardens, renowned Victorian architecture and two penguin colonies. On arrival enjoy a tour of the Whitestone Cheese Factory. The tour will give you a behind the scenes look at the cheese making process, all the way from; make to taste. You will get to experience a cheese tasting with wine matching, informative talk and guided tour of the factory through their viewing galleries. After lunch (own cost), embark on a 90-minute easy-paced walk around the Historic Precinct and be immersed in Oamaru’s rich heritage, culture and geology with a knowledgeable local guide. Tonight enjoy a ‘Trust the Chef’ Tasting Menu at a local restaurant. Accommodation: Heritage Court Motor Lodge, Oamaru ** TOTE Textile Emporium Optional Sightseeing (additional cost): Evening viewing at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony Watch the little blue penguins, Oamaru's cutest little residents as they come ashore from their days at sea. Day 10: Saturday 11 September 2021: OAMARU / CHRISTCHURCH (BD) This morning stop for breakfast at Riverstone Kitchen. Built in a paddock on the family farm, 15 minutes north of Oamaru in North Otago, it has become a destination for lucky locals and food-loving kiwis alike. Then take a detour inland with a visit to The Quilting Shed. The Quilting Shed is in a converted farm building so from the outside is just a corrugated shed, however once you open the door you are embraced by a riot of colour. They stock a wonderful array of patchwork fabrics, threads, batting, wide backing fabrics, books, patterns, kits and patchwork and quilting notions. Continue north through Timaru and across the sheep and cropping areas of the fertile Canterbury Plains. The snow-capped Southern Alps can be seen to the West for much of the journey. This evening get together for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
