2 Solent Business Awards Welcome Welcome to the Hilton at the Ageas Bowl – a new venue for a new event, the first ever Solent Business Awards. We are delighted to welcome so many successful and inspiring companies and organisations to celebrate the very best of business on the south coast – at what we believe will quickly grow to become one of the region’s most eagerly-anticipated and prestigious awards events. Solent Business Awards (SBA) has grown out of the Hampshire Business Awards, run successfully for the past 25 years as a one-county awards scheme. Now expanded to take in other parts of the Solent region – from Weymouth in the west to Chichester in the east, the SBA is now run by The Business Magazine, organisers of the flagship Thames Valley Business Magazine Awards for the past two decades. The entries received for this 2015 competition were of a very high standard and from across the sectors, from manufacturing to technology, professional services to construction. The judging panel carefully scrutinised the nominations, interviewed many of the candidates – and tonight you, the shortlisted companies and organisations, are here at this special awards dinner. Congratulations to you all. I would like to thank the sponsors – NatWest, KPMG, Pitmans, James Cowper Kreston and the University of Southampton – for their engagement and support. I would also like to thank Taylor Made Computer Services and the CBI for backing this first year of the SBA. We are delighted that a high-profile night like tonight has attracted such a high-profile speaker – Lord Digby Jones is a renowned champion of business, and therefore the ideal guest to help christen these new awards. We also welcome Sally Taylor, a name and face known to everyone in the south through her regular television and charity work. And while on the subject of charities, please give generously to tonight’s very worthwhile cause, Naomi House & Jacksplace. David Murray Publisher, The Business Magazine The Business Magazine The Business Magazine is the leading B2B events and publishing house in the south, engaging with tens of thousands of businessmen and women every month through magazines, websites, newsletters, seminars, roundtable discussions and awards evenings. In addition, it runs events and lists ranging from Southern Manufacturing 100 to Doing Business with China, and from Southern Entrepreneurs to the Solent 250. A full report of tonight’s event will appear in the November issue – and photos will be on our website from tomorrow. 4 Sally Taylor Presenter Sally joined BBC South 20 years ago and has reported on virtually every major story in the region over that time. She was awarded the MBE in 2005 for services to regional broadcasting. On-screen, Sally is well-known for her easy and relaxed style. She loves presenting South Today and takes her responsibilities very seriously, but nothing is more important to her than interacting with the audience. Away from the screen Sally enjoys sailing. She has a passion for good wine and food and is a keen organic gardener. She writes a weekly column in the Southern Daily Echo, which she calls her “rant of the week”. In the spring of 2007 Sally was able to fulfil a lifelong ambition and travel to Antarctica. Sailing on the Royal Navy ice patrol vessel, HMS Endurance on a 21,000 mile journey via the Falkland Islands, Sally broadcast live from the amazing landscape. In 1999 Sally underwent surgery for breast cancer and as a result is now involved in a number of charities. She is also a patron of ‘Simon Says’, a charity that helps children who are bereaved. She works closely with the Hampshire Learning and Skills Council and Business Link in promoting local businesses across the south. Sally’s professionalism and attention to detail is key to her style and her sharp sense of humour with her colleagues and with the audience at home, has made her one of the most popular presenters in the south of England.

6 Lord Digby Jones Keynote speaker Lord Digby Jones was born into business. Some of his earliest memories are of life in a busy corner shop where he lived with his mother, father and older sister. It was here he learnt the first rudiments of business – important values that were never to leave him. His graduation from University College London was followed by 20 years with Edge & Ellison, a Birmingham- based firm of lawyers, where he worked his way up from articled clerk to senior partner. In 2000 he joined the CBI and was able to put some of these ideas into action. During his six and a half years as director general he became known in the public arena especially for his candid, forthright attitude in his many media appearances. In 2005 he was knighted for his services to business and became Sir Digby Jones in the Queen’s New Years Honours List. When he left the CBI in 2006 he spent the next year in the private sector as adviser to Deloitte and Barclays Capital, held a variety of non-executive board roles, and was the unpaid UK skills envoy. In 2007 he was appointed minister of state for UKTI and became a life peer. Forthright and, as ever, loyal to British business he spent the next 15 months “doing it in a different way”. He did not join the party of government and without the ambition to progress in politics he concentrated on the business of promoting Britain across the world, travelling to 31 countries in 45 overseas visits. Now, in addition to his role as an active crossbencher in the House of Lords he serves on the boards of various businesses and organisations – among them Triumph Motorcycles and Grove Industries – and is an adviser to JCB, BP plc, Harvey Nash plc, Barberry Developments, Babcock International Group plc, and others. He is corporate ambassador for Jaguar Cars, and a non- executive director of Leicester Tigers plc.

The support given by Naomi House is unique in the central south of England. Naomi House is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, delivering a range of services to help families on good days, difficult days and last days. “Our family will be forever grateful for the outstanding support and empathy that Naomi House provides for our son, the sibling support for our daughter and for us as parents.
