Do more in Derbyshire Take a trip out to the Derwent Valley Mills on the River Derwent, the only World Heritage Site in the East Midlands. The site contains fascinating mill complexes, the watercourses that powered them and the settlements that were built around them for the workers. The Derwent Valley Heritage Way passes through the valley’s beautiful and historic landscapes – explore on foot or on a cycling tour. Crich Tramway Village, with more than 60 trams built between 1873 and 1982, is a real journey back in time. Many of the buildings in the village have been rescued from elsewhere in the UK – the Red Lion Pub, for example, came all the way from Stoke and was rebuilt on site, brick by brick. Taking a punt on Cambridge Avoid the stress and cost of city driving and parking with the local park-and-ride service. The nearest parking site is at Madingley, just six miles from the hotel, and you can park for up to 18 hours. Cheltenham and the Cotswolds Make sure you drop into Cotswold Motoring Museum in the pretty village of Bourton-on-the Water. Owned by Boundless, a visit to the museum (pictured above) provides a fascinating journey through the history of 20th-century motoring. With an impressive collection of rare vehicles and classic memorabilia, you’ll be enthralled by this nostalgic glimpse into life on the road the way it used to be. Cheltenham boasts a strong heritage and some impressive architecture. The best way to see it is on one of the town’s walking tours, which highlight the most notable buildings and monuments, history and more. The best of Chester Chester is an ancient place and its historic streets – protected by the most complete city walls in Britain – are fascinating to explore. The River Dee meanders through the heart of the city and makes a relaxing riverside walk with its picturesque bridges. The city’s cathedral is well worth a visit, and shopping lovers will won’t want to the world-famous Rows, black and white half-timbered buildings with splendid two-tier medieval galleries (above). Chester Zoo is a popular attraction – there are 125 acres of zoological gardens and some 35,000 animals to see. You can also learn about some critically endangered species, such as orangutans, lemurs and lions. If you fancy a trip to a National Trust property, Erdigg Hall and Chirk Castle are nearby, and Tatton Park is 40 minutes away by car. St George’s Hall makes a spectacular setting for a state banquet, when a table seating 160 guests is decorated with porcelain and silver gilt from the Royal Collection. Since 1660, Windsor Castle has also performed its own changing of the guard. To this day, this event takes place in the quadrangle outside the Royal Apartments when the Queen is in residence. Bournemouth – the beach and beyond Bournemouth became known as a spa destination in 18th century and Londoners flocked here when they needed to get out of the capital. People do much the same today and the town’s famous beach stretches for seven miles from Sandbanks in the east to Hengistbury Head in the west. It’s a great place for a stroll and there are many attractions you can enjoy with your friends or family. The town is also known for its lovely gardens and the beachfront Boscombe Chine Gardens, originally landscaped by the Victorians, have a café and mini-golf. Further afield is the open-air Bournemouth Aviation Museum where you can sit in the cockpit of a 1959 Vulcan Bomber, which arrived at the museum in 2003 after long service with the RAF. The museum also pays tribute to Palmair, a local airline which began with a single flight to Palma in 1958 before going on to operate to 10 European airports until 2011. 39
