Every anecdote a masterpiece
• Tales of traditional craftsmanship and
  modern business concepts
• Features experiences of young and old alike
• In large print to be read and read aloud

How industrious Willi makes an entire town out of bird boxes, or shrewd Magda bumps up the sales
figures with a canny trick – the stories for senior citizens about work and professions feature these
and other experiences and anecdotes. And if work is not going so well for young people today, be it
due to unpleasant encounters with the boss or a lack of inspiration for a particular project, grandpa-
rents often come to the rescue with their skills and experience.
Many readers will recognise one situation or another while reading, and remember that no one was
ever born a master – not even in the good old days.

The authors
Christina Wagner, formerly Zieger, Amberg, has been writing short stories, predominantly for senior
citizens, as the member of a writers‘ workshop for many years.
Andreas Ascherl, Amberg, a journalist, also enjoys writing stories which inspire reflection and are en-
joyed by old and young alike.
Margit Lammert, Hersbruck, writes stories for senior citizens as part of a writers’ workshop.

Sex has no best-before date
• Promoting autonomy in old age
• Creating intimate sanctuaries in nursing
  institutions
• Tipps for challenging behaviours related to
  dementia

Sexuality in old age is a taboo topic in many contexts, including the field of nursing care. The authors
encourage readers to confront this often embarrassing subject. Here, nursing staff will find sugges-
tions on how to deal with sensitive issues in a professional manner. How can the right of elderly peo-
ple to sexual autonomy be maintained in an inpatient context? How can nursing professionals best
support care-dependent elderly people who desire physical closeness? What triggers the desire for
affection in elderly people? Thanks to the open-minded approach and explicit descriptions of situa-
tions, some of these unusual, the authors offer alternative perspectives without losing sight of legal
limits. As a result, this book constitutes an important contribution to the topic of “sexuality in old
age” at institutional level.

The authors
Gabriele Paulsen, Hamburg, a specialist nurse, works as a consultant and coach in the field of health-
care. As the owner of the agency “Nessita”, she recommends erotic services to senior citizens and

herself.

A dignified death
• Strategies for caring companionship
 during everyday nursing care
• Rules of thumb and case studies
• Questions to aid self-reflection

Which aspects should be considered when people with dementia syndrome are at their end of life?
What defines good terminal care? How is it possible to ease the strain placed on nursing professionals
and relatives as they perform this challenging task? Which framework conditions should be imple-
mented by the nursing facility‘s management?
The author describes the dying process in those suffering from dementia. She provides suggestions
on how nursing care can be organized in various institutions (nursing homes, hospitals etc.) and on
an outpatient basis, in order to create a dignified culture of dying. She demonstrates clearly and em-
pathetically how to ensure that sufferers continue to feel safe and secure, even in the final days of

When people with dementia suffer from pain
• Approaches to comprehensive pain
  management
• Suitable for various schools of therapy
• Focuses on an increasingly important
  target group

People suffering from dementia are no longer able to communicate pain in a comprehensible manner.
Screaming, lashing out and resistance to nursing care can all be signs of this. How can you tell whe-
ther a dementia patient is experiencing pain? What can be done to alleviate it?
This book presents a series of pain detection methods and provides helpful tips on meaningful pain
documentation. In addition to drug therapy, baths, embrocations, basal stimulation and the validating
conversation technique are described. Here, the focus is placed on how those affected experience the
situation and on the approach adopted by caregivers, because the fear accompanying pain can only
be allayed during an encounter in which sufferers are valued and respected.

Bonding as a safe basis
• Bonding as a helpful resource
• Explanation of different types of bonding
• For the employment in practice

How can disorientated elderly people be helped to regain a sense of security? By drawing on resources
within their personal biographies. A key element here is bonding, i. e. close relationships with trusted
individuals. This guide clearly and vividly elucidates how bonding experiences can be beneficial in the
context of work with dementia sufferers. Numerous case studies illustrate how attachment disorders
negatively affect disease management, and how to detect preventive factors within the sufferers‘
biographies. The author demonstrates how the bonding concept can be practically integrated within
care approaches including reality orientation training, validation, dementia care mapping and self
preservation therapy. The book contains a glossary of key terms, and guidelines used to analyse and
comprehend bonding behaviour.

Giving strength and hope
• Helps readers to understand and accept
  the pain
• Supports them as they process their grief
• Strengthens inner stability via exercises

When parents lose their child as a result of miscarriage, stillbirth or shortly after birth, the depth of
their grief is frequently underestimated. Parents are often confused and overwhelmed by the intensi-
ty with which their grief, with all its facets – pain, anger, feelings of guilt, helplessness – makes itself
manifest.
The book describes this extreme experience in an empathetic manner. Effective examples illustrate
ways to cope with the grieving process: for mothers, fathers, relatives as well as for future siblings.
The book offers support to those affected, helping them create a special place for the dead child, gra-
dually finding closure as life moves on .

The author
Hildegard Wörz-Strauß, Augsburg, graduate theologian, is a trained hospital chaplain and has been
supporting parents who have suffered a miscarriage or stillbirth since 2002. She lost her first baby in
childbirth. She is now mother to three children.

Approaches to music therapy
• Clear, compact introduction
• Settings, schools, methods,
  instruments, effects
• Includes numerous case studies

Which therapeutic functions can music fulfil? And what sort of music is used in the process? Is it a
question of playing or hearing, alone or in a group, and which instruments are involved? How is a re-
lationship with the client established within the context of music therapy?
This book outlines the diverse ways in which music can be used for therapeutic purposes. It describes
therapeutic stances and “working models”, placing these in the context of medical explanatory ap-
proaches and societal conditions. Numerous case studies consolidate aspects including settings and
the use of music therapy as a group or one-to-one method. Finally, a professional-political analysis of
music therapy addresses (further) training and future developments.

• Numerous examples from music therapy
  in practice
• From amygdala to diencephalon: the top
  25 brain structures
• Countless practical tips and exercise
  questions and answers

What happens in the brain when music is played? What effect do sounds have on (muscle) tone? How
does voice relate to mood? This book provides answers to questions like these on the foundations of
neurobiology of music and music therapy, which are prepared didactically with numerous practical
examples and illustrations. Taking fundamental neuroanatomical and physiological principles as the
basis, listening in general and the perception and production of music are explained in a comprehen-
sible manner. Neurobiological models describing the efficacy of music therapy are discussed using
selected clinical disorders from the fields of psychiatry and neurology.
An indispensable short textbook and reference work for all those interested in the effects of music

Get the film rolling!
• Suitable for various schools of therapy
• Features a list of appropriate films
• Gives psychotherapy fresh impetus

A good film captivates us from the very first moment, taking us on a journey to another world. Vir-
tually everyone has a favourite film which has touched or moved them in some way. But what makes
films so fascinating? Why do they affect us at all? And, above all, how can films help people to heal?
The book provides comprehensive insights into the ways in which films can be used as therapeutic
tools. Practical experiences drawn from day-to-day work in the field of psychotherapy demonstrate
the various behavioural patterns which may be triggered by specific films. Selected examples from
the world of moving images highlight the diverse possibilities which arise from the use of films in
psychotherapy.

Rogers meets family
• The training and how-to book
• Strategies for special family situations
  and life stages

Each individual is influenced by the experiences gathered in his or her family of origin. These may play
an important role in later life. Each encounter with families is informed both by the experiences of the-
rapists and the particular characteristics of the family in question. How can these encounters be made
as positive as possible? At which points does a family member find his or her family accepting, helpful,
supportive and valuable?
This book applies the person-centred approach by Carl Rogers to families. The focus is placed on the
individual and widened to include the entire family. In addition to theoretical foundations, practical
concepts detailing ways in which families can be helped to regain trust in a functional coexistence are
described.

Chaos is often the order of the day in the world of children with ADHD. They have difficulty in sitting
still, concentrating or controlling initial impulses. As a result, learning often takes great effort, and
conflicts are inevitable. However, parents of children with ADHD do not have an easy time of it either.
In addition to coping with the diagnosis, they are required to deal with possible medication and ma-
nage family life at the same time, and frequently reach breaking point.

Do not forget the siblings!
• Explains possible difficult emotions
• Explores opportunities and risks
• Contains suggestions for creating a
  positive environment

Life in a family comprising both able-bodied and disabled children does not just pose a challenge for
the parents. The able-bodied siblings are also tested, when charged with looking after an autistic
brother, for instance, or when their parents take them along to therapy sessions of a mentally han-
dicapped sister – maybe several times a week. These children often suppress their own needs and
wishes in favour of the disabled brother or sister, frequently finding the situation a challenge, and are
sometimes unwilling to make sacrifices voluntarily. The able-bodied siblings show consideration for
the disabled child and start to take responsibility at an early age, which can simultaneously prove a
burden and a unique opportunity. Ilse Achilles describes how children with a disabled brother or sis-
ter develop and grow up. She also explores the various opportunities and risks involved in this type
of family constellation. Finally, she provides a wide range of examples illustrating how parents and
the social environment can have a positive impact on the children‘s development, and how negative
influences can be reduced and avoided.

• Day-to-day teaching aids

• Includes exercises and reflective tasks

Teachers working in inclusive education for pupils with behavioural difficulties are confronted with
numerous questions: what should I do when pupils hurt themselves or others? Or if they refuse to do
assignments, draw attention to themselves or demand too much closeness?
The author answers these and countless other questions in his book. In addition to key principles, he
also addresses a wide variety of typical teaching situations in which pupils exhibit problematic beha-
viour and are thus unable to participate in lessons. These situations are analysed and subject to ped-
agogic and instructional examination. The book provides both practical support and also highlights
potential hazards and avoidable errors.

teachers need to know how to build and consolidate these with pupils, parents and other employees
at a professional level.
In this guide, the authors explore the reasons why relationship work is a core skill for all teachers,
particularly within the context of inclusive schools, and how it can be learned gradually. Case studies
and practical tips help readers to put their knowledge into practice.

Strategies for lexical acquisition
• With 20 therapeutic units for preschool as
  well as elementary school
• With a DVD: 300 photos in 90 templates
• With numerous case studies drawn from
  daily life with ADHD

Lexicon Pirate is a successful, evidence-based therapeutic method used to improve lexical deficits
in children with language development disorders. Unlike existing elaboration therapies, the focus is
placed on strategies as opposed to on individual words. The children learn how to recognise and fill le-
xical gaps. They improve their ability to save the new words in their own mental lexicon, subsequently
recalling these and linking them with other words.
The book gives readers a comprehensible introduction to the therapeutic method, providing 20 pre-
pared therapeutic units on the topic of lexical acquisition for use in children of pre-school age, and a
further 20 for those of primary school age. In this 3rd edition, the authors present the specific cha-
racteristics of lexical learning in children of school age and the particularities applying to multilingual
children in detail. The use of Lexicon Pirate in an educational context is outlined methodically as a
supplement to the therapeutic approach.
