Kenmare and District Gardening Club AGM The A.G.M was held on February 5th in the Gateway, Kenmare. Af ter reports by the treasurer and secretary, the committee were unanimously reinstated, their hard work and dedication being appreciated by the club. The chairperson encouraged the members to open their gardens and looked forward to hearing suggestions for lectures. Stephen Austen then announced details of our forth- coming annual trip, which this year will be to the Dublin region. The meeting was followed by a talk by Donchadh MacCarthaigh, entitled ‘Plant Quality’. With his high academic and commercial experience, we were treated to a most informative talk on the regulations that cover plant cultivation in the com- mercial sector – the successes and the pitf alls! He welcomed the f ree move- ment of plants within the EU. where t here are good international standards and rules governing tree production. He stressed the importance of plants produced on a commercial scale to be f rom a good seed source and a reliable origin. He recommended that plants purchased should be named cultivars and that trees should be correctly graf ted, that we should be wary of our pur- chases f rom supermarkets, where the price will be competitive but where the plants may not have been kept under the best conditions – well done Aldi, they got top marks f or their plant care! March Meeting Our March meeting was held on Thursday 7th in the Gateway. Manf red Wan- del of Fruithill Farm, Bant ry, started as an organic vegetable grower, but formed his own business when it became evident that tools, seeds and f ertilis- ers of an organic nature were not available in Ireland at the time. He is now a major supplier with a parallel business supplying organic vegetables. In his inf ormative talk entitled ‘Things Organic’, he stressed the importance of for- ward planning in our own gardens. He emphasised the paramount need f or good soil protection whether t hrough crop rotation or mulching organically - primarily with grass cuttings or by sowing green manure, giving weed control, and the use of f ertilizers to cure def iciencies. Soil aeration is encouraged ra- ther than turning the soil, which upsets its inherent balance and structure. He even had a hopef ul message about terrible weeds, like dock, dandelion and couch grass; they can be turned into compost if they are stored in black bags, away f rom sight or mind for two years, having of course been removed with one of his amazing collection of superb tools! For f urther inf ormation, see www.f ruithillf arm.com. The next meeting is on April 4th, the Gateway, Kenmare at 7.30 p.m. Head gardener, Seamus Gallivan, will be giving us a talk on ‘Gardening at Rossdo- han’ , which should prove very informative f or those of us f acing the challeng- es and benef its of gardening near the Kenmare river – if on a somewhat small- er scale! New members are most welcome. Upcoming Meetings 2nd May - Assumpta Bloomf ield - 'My Favorite Roses' 6th June - Stephen Butler - 'Planting for Illusion' - Habitat planting f or Dublin Zoo. Page 11

Sneem Digital Hub Have Loved Ones Living Elsewhere Who’d Love To Come Home To Stay? As we’ve been highlighting via this forum and others over recent months, it is now very possible (in certain job types) to live and work in Sneem while maintaining your career. This is thanks to the phe- nomenal rate of growth in remote working made possible by amazing technolog- ical advances and co-working spaces such as Sneem Digital Hub throughout the planet. We are more than happy to talk to anyone currently working in tech roles. How- ever, did you know that there are many opportunities to up-skill in these areas in which huge demand exists? What that means is that even if you are currently working in a customer-f acing role whic h would currently preclude you f rom working in Sneem, it is possible to study online while continuing in your current role and gain qualif ications which are both in huge demand in Ireland and which could be carried out f rom Sneem Digital Hub. These in-demand areas include the likes of Digital Marketing, Coding, Cyber- Security and the Gaming industry. While no prior knowledge or experience in the area is required in most cases, a certain degree of being tech savvy would help greatly. So if you have loved ones who would love to come back to live and work in the area, be amongst f amily and contribute to the local community, please have them drop an email to aidan.murray@sneemdigitalhub.ie in the f irst instance and we can take it f rom there. We are particularly interested in the burgeoning area of Cyber Security and are currently exploring opportunities f or up-skilling, and ultimately jobs, in this area in partnership with Cork Institute of Technology. Our mission over the next f ew years is to bring new people to Sneem. The more of those who are ret urning to their roots the better as f ar as we are con- cerned, and we are keen to f acilitate as best we can those who wish to do so. It is a natural, hands-on healing method using the energy that surrounds each and every one of us, to bring improved well- being. All of us can and do perf orm Reiki most days of our lives by giving love and care to others. The mother who rubs the child’s grazed knee is giving Rei- ki. The Reiki practitioner however is able to direct and concentrate this energy both to the site of an injury and to all areas throughout the client’s body to achieve balance and well-being. It is neither a religion nor a dogma. It has its roots in Buddhist Quigong and has been adopted by most religions and cultures. It is a means of balancing and increasing the f low of electro-magnetic energy throughout the body. The Reiki practitioner receives energy at the same time as they give energy, so the whole treatment becomes a ‘Win-Win’ situation. Reiki practitioners come f rom all walks of lif e and f rom all cultures – it crosses religions, class and does not dif - f erentiate between ethnic groups. It is a true meeting of like minds. Reiki not only promotes healing in the physical body, it also balances and har- monises the person receiving the treatment emotionally, mentally and spiritual- ly. It helps to relieve stress, f atigue and pain. It is an excellent skill f or anyone in the caring prof essions to learn. It is a wonderf ul addition to traditional medicine and complementary therapies. It can be us ed saf ely and eff ectively with all oth- er f orms of treatment and can also be used on animals and plants. Emotional and acute problems respond quickly to Reiki whereas chronic and physical problems take longer to resolve as they have also taken longer to man- if est. There is no need to undress to receive Reiki as the energy passes through clothes, blankets or even plaster casts. Reiki is now being increasingly recognised by hospitals and hospices through- out the world as a valuable complimentary therapy, in the treatment of cancer patients and other serious conditions.
