De Gaulle in Ireland Today, f ifty years af ter his death, a monument to General Charles de Gaulle takes pride of place in the town of Sneem, County Kerry. For six weeks in 1969, against all the odds, rural Ireland played host to de Gaulle, the greatest French- man since Napoleon. This documentary explores the extraordinary circumstanc- es in which the general’s visit took place. It looks at de Gaulle’s aff inity with Ire- land, his interest in the f amous Irish statesman Daniel O’Connell, and his person- al connection with an ancient Irish f amily, the Mac Cartans. The f ilm also reveals how de Gaulle’s visit led to stronger ties between Ireland and France, a relation- ship that is now growing in importance as Brexit gets underway. Produced by Tile Films f or the Irish language broadcaster TG4, “De Gaulle in Éirinn” is based on original f ilming by Tile Films, as well as footage and inter- views f ilmed for the documentary “De Gaulle Derniers Secrets” (directed by Jean -Charles Deniau, and instigated and researched by Isabelle Galy-Aché). "De Gaulle in Eirinn" will be broadcast on TG4 in Ireland on November 11th, 2020. From that time also it will be available to stream on the TG4 website, https://www.tg4.ie/en/player/home/ Outdoor Christmas Market Proposal A f ew locals are thinking of running a small outdoor Christ- mas market in early December once level 5 restrictions lif t and depending on what level we go into. Community News Sneem Walking Club SWC held a virtual Committee Meeting (in the absence of a Public AGM) on Tues- day 6th October 2020. This season was dominated, like all other parts of lif e, by Covid19. The spring lock- down meant that club members lost out on a number of club walks and so as soon as we were able to, we have held walks every Sunday. Walks are understandably diff erent as we must comply with Government and Mountaineering Ireland Covid19 guidelines. The club members have been very supportive of the requirements and adherence to them. Understandably some members have chosen not to walk since they be- came aware of Covid19. Many of the walks were on the Iveagh Peninsula usually part of or close to the Ker- ry Way close to Sneem. However, our main walk leader, Michael Joe Murphy, was able to guide the longer walks into hidden valleys and along less well-known tracks. There were also a couple of walks on the Beara Peninsula early in the season. Michael Joe introduced the walkers to the mountains well known to himself and his f amily very close to Sneem; we have also included walks that explored Copper Mines dating back to the 6th Century and Cáit na Pluaise Cave where a lady raised her large f amily in a cave af ter being evicted f rom her home during the times of the Famine in the 1850s. Our walks are always very inf ormative and we not only walk with the most amazing views but every walk is considered a “school day”. Unf ortunately, Covid 19 guidelines halted organised walks through the walking club early in October and continue to do so as we have moved to Level 5 of the re- strictions. We had intended to do a charity walk earlier in the year but again due to Covid19 these plans had to be shelved. We do however currently have an application in with Pieta House to host a Darkness in to Light walk in Sneem in 2021, subject to health guidelines. We also hope to be involved in promoting walking as an activity via a Mountaineering Ireland initiative; this is also on hold until Covid19 is better under- stood and controlled. Many thanks go to: Michael Joe Murphy f or organising great walks f or us all, to all Committee members for their support and input and to all the club members who have continued to sup- port the club. Membership f ees for the new season due end of October 2020 is under review. Stay saf e everyone and look af ter yourselves and your loved ones. Tahilla School It is great to see our numbers growing. The f irst day back was very relaxed, we spent the time getting to know our new classmates and getting accustomed to our new routine. Things are a bit diff erent f rom last year with the new Covid rules - washing hands, social distancing etc. However, it is great to be back learning together once again…even if it means lots of hand-washing! By Gearoid and Louis. Apple and Blackberry Picking In September, when the s un was shining, both classes had the opportunity to go apple and blackberry picking. We are very lucky to have three apple trees in our school garden. The teachers allowed us to climb the trees to pick the apples. We shook the trees letting the apples f all to the ground so the younger class could gather them up. We separated the rotten apples f rom the nice, juicy ones. Some teachers and students brought the rotten apples home to f eed to their donkeys. Marketa, a student f rom the Czech Republic, gave us the idea of making Apple Strudel. The next day, Múinteoir Ellen taught us how to make it. We each made our own individual Apple Strudel with some simple ingredients - apple, puff pas- try, sugar, cinnamon and raisins. The f ollowing week the blackberries were ripe f or picking. We worked together to f ind all the juicy blackberries around the school. We managed to f ind hundreds in such a small area. Using these berries and the apples f rom our school garden, Múinteoir Catherine taught us ho w to make delicious Apple and Blackberry Jam. We were so lucky that each student was able to bring home their own individual ‘School-made Jam ’. It was delicious. Yummm! By Josh, Michele and Nathan. Page 12
Tahilla School Math’s Week took place f rom the 12th to the 16th of October. It was stuff ed to the brim with exciting, hands-on Math’s activities. We kick started the week wit h some brain-teasing puzzles. On Tuesday, we integrated Art with Maths and creat - ed some optical illusions using only rulers and pencils. It was so engaging that the Senior Class nearly missed their precious break time! In the middle of the week, we were practicing our times tables in a bright and colorf ul way. Friday was the most enjoyable part of the week. Third, Fourth and Fif th Class created unusu- al shapes, towers and art out of the nature around them, while Sixth Class com- pleted a Math’s trail around the school grounds. Math’s week proved to be great success. We were learning new and interesting mathematical concepts while having f un! We our very gratef ul to have the opportunity to learn in such a f un and exciting way. By Eibhlin, Angelica and Marketa. Holy Communion Tahilla CNS We would like to congratulate Nat han Hallissey in 3rd Class at Tahilla CNS on receiving his First Holy Communion in September. He had a great day celebrating with his f amily.
Sneem Digital Hub Fujitsu and How You Can Help We are delighted to share that Fujitsu have conf irmed their intention to use the hub as a sat ellite office. This is f antastic news f or the hub and the area. The really key thing now is that we have absolutely as many people as possible on our skills database. Prior to Covid, we had some indigenous companies willing to place new rec ruits here and now we have Fujitsu. Our primary challenge is to get access to as many skilled people as possible who are interested in returning, or moving, to South Kerry and all it has to off er, as well as those currently living here and interested in new opportunities. With the accelerated acceptance of remote working, with Covid causing many of us to consider what we really want f rom lif e and where we want to be, with 2 housing estates coming to completion in the near f uture and 16 stand-alone properties on our list at present and as we move f rom a truly “annus horribilis” into a New Year with people really pondering what they wish f or their f uture, the stars are aligned better than ever f or people to make that lif e-changing move. I know I must sound like a broken record but I again ask you, as you’re talking with your loved ones, f riends, colleagues etc., listen out for and explore with them if you hear indications that they might not be overly happy with where they are geographically and otherwise. If they show any interest in the prospect of having an enhanced lif estyle down here, please put us in touch with them. Of ten people love the notion of moving but are intimidated by the logistical obsta- cles en-route to getting there and consequently leave it as an untouched pipedream. We off er a concierge-type service to people seriously considering the move. We can arrange f or them to view properties, many of which are not visible online. We can introduce them to the appropriate people in schools, creches, clubs and societies etc. according to their own needs and interests. We can help arrange temporary accommodation, provide them with a f ree working space etc. if they wish to come down and trial the place f or a period of time while viewing properties etc. In essence we’re there to help make the transition as smooth as possible. So please introduce us. Ideally get their approval to give me their contact details so that I can make contact to see if I can help them in any way. Alternatively they can contact me at 089 9420098 or aidan.murray@s neemdigitalhub.ie Working Remotely Or Interested In Doing So? We’re looking to establish a Sneem area chapter of Grow Remote. The idea is to create a type of support group for people working remotely, whether f rom home or f rom the hub. It would have a f ew strands with the f ocus areas depend- ing on the needs of the particular people in the group. The currently more chal- lenging strand is the social element. Working f rom home can be challenging in this regard and it could be benef icial to meet up with others, whether physically or virtually, in a similar boat. Please get in touch if any of this interests you. Page 14
Sneem Digital Hub From a networking perspective we could also explore what way we could help each other out, which could be in terms of idea generation, problem solving, intro- ductions etc. Another area that may be of interest is that of employment. There are many good remote working jobs available that do not have high visibility and we would have access, via Grow Remote, to these jobs which we would share on an ongoing basis with members. Winter Offer For People Living In The Area And Working From Hom e Although delayed by lockdown, we wish to go ahead with our planned Winter of - f er for December, January and February assuming we are permitted to be open for those months. Many people are working f rom home by necessity at the mo- ment. For some, that works perf ectly and we’d love to support those people, as mentioned over, via a Grow Remote Chapter. For some, though, some variety f rom working at home would be very welcome. Social isolation can become a challenge, as can distractions. Some are more disciplined than others when it comes to working f rom home. We’ve had several people say that they were getting more done in 5 hours in the hub than in 8-9 hours at home due to the f ocused working environment. Others have shared that they really appreciate the clear delineation between work and home lif e which working f rom the hub affords. For many, just passing by the work desk brings their mind to work, thus limiting their true availability to their loved ones in person- al time. From an ergonomic perspective, some people don’t have the ideal desk and chair set-up etc. at home which can be damaging for physical well-being. Obviously, we’re very happy that we help eliminate these challenges with the availability of the hub. It can, however, be diff icult to justif y the expenditure of working f rom the hub. For that reason, and exclusively for people living f ull-time in the area, we are delighted to off er a month’s unlimited use of the hub for the dramatically reduced f ee of €100 per month + VA T (13.5%). This would be like a gym membership … you can come in every day or just pop in for a bit of variety, when you have particular calls when you need outstanding broadband etc. We believe that, apart f rom all the benef its alluded to above, the potential savings in not using the heating and electricity by working f rom home, make this an attrac- tive proposition. Still not sure? Why not contact me to arrange t rial use of the hub for a f ew days, f ree of charge and without obligation? If you are interested in any of the above, or have any other queries, please con- tact me at aidan.murray@sneemdigitalhub.ie or 089 9420098. Please note that I am working 2 days a week during lockdown so there may be a f ew days delay in responding at times. Page 15

Pumpkins on the Bridge Lots of pumpkins appeared on the bridge for Halloween showing off the talent we have here in Sneem. It was a horrible night but with the absence of trick or treating this year plenty of f amilies braved the wind and rain to enjoy the pump- kins. All of the pumpkin carvings gained entry into the prize draw. Pam Muller f rom Brushwood scooped the Green Earth Organics €50 voucher. Isobelle O'Brien won a €30 voucher f or The Hungry Knight Huge thanks to all of our support and sponsors this year. Daly's Supervalu (Kenmare), Riney's Bar, Green Chair, The Hungry Knight, Green Eart h Organics and Stephen Bradshaw f or the Rosemary Bradshaw plate. We look forward to next year when we hope to have a more social events. Don’t forget to retrieve your pumpkin f rom the bridge if you haven’t already done so. Page 23
