Year 1 Magenta practiced melodic dictation by hearing and notating four beat melodies using so and mi. Children enjoyed singing or chanting action songs like “Engine Number 9” and “Tony Chestnut”. Using the musical game “Icka Backa Soda Cracker” each student had a turn to play percussion instruments and accompany the singing. On the drums and maracas, students played a 4 beat rhythm, using ta, titi and za. On the chime bars and xylophones, students improvised a 4 beat melody using so and mi. Half the class sang the lyrics while the other half sang a melodic ostinato, using words from the song like “soda cracker”. This is a wonderful way for students to demonstrate their understanding of melody, harmony and rhythm.
