3 it’s SMMart to visit the world’s #1 trade fair for the maritime industry Every two years we call the maritime industry to get together – and every time we’re overwhelmed by the response. Opening on 4 September, this year’s SMM will see a record-breaking number of exhibitors from all over the world and prove to be a visitor magnet again. What sets SMM apart is the global relevance created by the trade fair and its accompanying conferences. Like no other event in the maritime industry, SMM offers a platform for inspiration, networking and business for visitors and exhibitors alike. It’s here where the key players of the various sectors come together to unveil innovations and discuss new strategies. On more than 90,000 m2 in 13 halls, all the urgent topics in SMMart shipping are represented – from exploiting new market opportunities to coping with high pressure on cost-efficiency, and from managing game-changing digitalisation technology trends to handling challenging current and future environmental requirements. This issue of SMM Insights gives you a compact overview of what to expect from your visit. While choosing your highlights and planning your trip, please bear in mind: it’s SMMart to stay in Hamburg for the weekend as well. Looking forward to welcoming you in September 2018 in our beautiful maritime metropolis. w t r a a t ch o glim iler t o ur pse ge of S t a s mm MM - h am bu r t r ail e g . c o m / r Bernd Aufderheide Claus Ulrich Selbach President and CEO Business Unit Director
4 why SMM every who’s here? SMM merges information and fascination. It offers everything that maritime professionals from all over the world look for, packed in a perfectly organised four-day event that opens with the Maritime Future Summit the day before. What drives the maritime world is what drives SMM: it’s here that industry experts seek and find ways to use special markets to develop business and to broaden their perspective on future areas of maritime technology and upcoming necessities. There is no better place to discuss options on how to survive under exceptional international pricing for new ships or freight rates and to learn how to benefit from the advantages of digitalisation, be it 3D printing in production or autonomous systems in shipping. And of course, it’s the stage for regulators and politicians who have greener shipping and public acceptance on their agenda – as well as for innovators who present the solutions. 95% overwhelmingly positive response 95%* of the visitors rated SMM 2016 either excellent or good in an overall assessment of the event. Exchange information and experience with peers 97% will be attending SMM 2018 97%* of all visitors indicated that they are either 32% considering or will certainly be attending SMM 2018 55% 42% 35% 46% 48% 26% Generate new Education / building on Check out the competition business leads Gain an overview of own specialist knowledge developments in the industry Touch base with existing Learn about innovations and new technology business contacts visitor breakdown by purpose of visit in 2016 (more than one answer possible) * data from an independent trade fair survey at SMM 2016
5 yone 50,000 visitors from 124 nations »Right on the pulse of shipping, SMM is a must-attend event for the maritime industry. At the centre are the technical solutions and topics of the future. The enormous diversity of participants and events guarantees strong impetus.« Richard von Berlepsch, Managing Director Fleet Management, Hapag-Lloyd
6 SMM Maritime Industry Report within a sea of challenges, optimism SMM’s Maritime Industry Report serves as the industry’s mood barometer. It displays a short-term forecast among visitors and exhibitors of SMM. In an online survey* taken in July 2017, they predicted their business situation by the end of 2018. Concerning future investments, two of the shipping industry’s central topics are the IMO Ballast Water Convention and transition to the low sulphur cap regulation. In regard to that, the survey shows the percentage of participants who will have to invest – and what type of investment and kind of fuel technologies they would opt for.
