1. SkillSphere eMUN –The Afghan Summit– Getting
Acquainted
Thriving in both the online and offline domains, SkillSphere’s MUN’s have made a
positive and tangible impact on the lives of 1000s of students in India & the Middle
East.

Since 2012, the organization has curated and organized over 400 MUN conferences
across Asia, with 80000+ students participating. Once the pandemic set in,
SkillSphere pioneered online Model UN conferences and organized India’s first
online MUN – SkillSphere eMUN. Since then, we have organized over 50 MUN
conferences that have witnessed participation from 12000+ students, 200+ institutes,
and 7+ countries!

In the last few months, SkillSphere has proudly organized a series of Model United
Conferences that are themed around potent global issues. These began with The
Sustainable Development Goals in early May 2021, The World Health Summit in
late May 2021, The World Refugee Summit in June 2021, and proceeded into The
Global Happiness Summit in July 2021.

For the next iteration of SkillSphere eMUN, we believe that it is essential to sensitize
students to the most pressing global issue today, and try to positively impact
development in its regard – the crisis in Afghanistan. It is for this reason that the next
SkillSphere eMUN has been themed ‘The Afghan Summit’

The Afghan Summit is an opportunity for students to display
their leadership, decision-making, and diplomatic skills to proactively discuss and
tackle different issues being faced by the people of Afghanistan. Post the Taliban
takeover, there is a lot of uncertainty, flux and adversity in the region, which we as
global citizens must tackle.

This 2-day virtual conference will have 5 committees with 18 delegates per
committee. Each of these committees will be discussing a different facet related to the
current Afghan crisis including food and aid security; protection of refugees and
women; ensuring the Taliban respect human rights; among many issues including a
historic committee which will try to avert the current situation.

What makes the Afghan Summit even more exciting for students, is that they will not
be participating in traditional UN committees representing different
countries. Instead, delegates will represent different world bodies, individuals and
organizations in innovative committees which can actually make a tangible
difference in Afghanistan at the moment.

This document provides a basic brief about all 5 committees and their agendas. The
committee matrices have been provided so that students can opt for delegations
accordingly.

2. Committee 1: Afghan Refugee Welfare Committee

Agenda: Taking Adequate Steps to Manage the Afghan Refugee
Situation
After the seizing of power by the Taliban, several civilians and expatriates of various
countries were able to leave Afghanistan. However, many more civilians aren’t able to
leave Afghanistan through a secure medium. There are throngs of Afghans who are
trying to dangerously cross over borders into neighboring countries or unsuccessfully
seek asylum in foreign countries as refugees.

Such a situation involving Afghanistan is not new. Therefore, we have to learn from
past events and make better decisions to deal with the refugee crisis.

This committee needs to look at the safe passage of the refugees, ensure proper
rehabilitation, basic facilities like food, water, education, employment, and take it a step
further by providing an appropriate framework for the application of these measures.

The delegates will be representing various organizations, agencies, and countries that are
directly and indirectly involved in the Afghan Refugee Crisis.

3. Committee 2: G-20
Agenda: Ensuring the Establishment of a Progressive Form of
Government in Afghanistan

Post recent press conferences by the Taliban, it is evident that the organization plans to
introduce their interpretation of Islamic Sharia law to govern the country. The biggest
issue though is that it is unclear as to what this means in general. Based on past
experiences, the impact on women, children and human rights in general has been
devastating when Taliban governed Afghanistan.

Moving back to earlier methods of governance which were regressive and oppressive
will possibly create a vacuum as it might nullify the progress of nearly 20 years made
by Afghanistan’s democratic government, in the fields of education, human rights, equal
rights for women, stronger trade and diplomatic ties.

While current news out of Afghanistan is not easy to verify owing to limited access to
media, there are reports of human rights violations in cases of protests by people,
women’s rights and those who supported US forces. Taliban’s ideologies are quite
contrasting to those implemented in Afghanistan over the past 20 years. Thus, a
progressive form of government must be established to ensure that Afghanistan and its
people are on the way to development and peace. This can be ensured through adequate
interventions of influential countries of the world – some of who can probably be held
responsible in a way for the current situation.

4. Committee 3: Global Aid Conglomerate
Agenda: Strategies for providing Aid of All Kinds to the People of
Afghanistan

With massive flux at a political and societal level expected in Afghanistan, it is certain
that aid of all kinds is going to be essential for the well-being of the Afghan society –
aid that goes beyond direct support to the government. Afghans will need help at all
levels to restore peace and stability in all aspects and areas like rights, education,
infrastructure, healthcare, facilities, institutions, etc.

It is the responsibility of this committee to come up with strategies that will help aid
flow seamlessly into these areas, ensuring the overall development of Afghanistan and
its people.

5. Committee 4: Model Lok Sabha

Agenda: Revising India’s Foreign Policy With Respect to Afghanistan

India has been Afghanistan's ally on its road to recovery in the post-war phase. It has
helped Afghanistan in redevelopment and infrastructure. It also has several
investments made as goodwill in Afghanistan, further solidifying ties between both
countries.

Ever since the Taliban's takeover, all of these investments have fallen into disarray,
thus jeopardizing India's position in Afghanistan. Furthermore, the Taliban has asked
India to complete its projects in Afghanistan and warned against any military action
by India on the Taliban. In return, the Taliban has assured no harm to Indian nationals
in Afghanistan.

India is walking on thin ice with its policy towards Afghanistan, and therefore it is the
responsibility of this committee to revise India's Foreign Policy with regards to
Afghanistan.

6. Committee 5: Historic Parliament of World Leaders (2005)
Agenda: Revisiting Strategies that Failed in Afghanistan to Avoid the
2021 Taliban Takeover

Several situations, policies, and decisions made Afghanistan a recipe for disaster in
recent times. However, to blame the current world developments for being the direct
trigger to the Taliban takeover would be irresponsible. Throughout these years, the
situation was sown through various policies and decisions, making it essential to
revisit and highlight these and learn from mistakes.

The delegates of this committee will be world leaders who will go back in time, taking
with them their learnings till August 2021 to fix better strategies in 2005 Afghanistan
and thus look at the problem from the root cause or birth of it, establishing
accountability which is absent in the situation in 2021.
