Cleveland Orchestra Miami Principal Guest Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero to open the season in November 2014 with music by Tchaikovsky, Rodrigo, Respighi, and Rimsky-Korsakov The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, prepared by Robert Porco, and the Miami Children’s Chorus, prepared by Timothy Sharp, with soprano Nadine Sierra, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, and baritone Stephen Powell, to perform in Orff’s Carmina Burana with Giancarlo Guerrero MIAMI – The Cleveland Orchestra announced today its 2014-15 programs for the ninth season of Cleveland Orchestra Miami. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and Cleveland Orchestra Miami Principal Guest Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero each lead the Orchestra in two concert weekends, November 2014 through March 2015. The Cleveland Orchestra is co-presented by the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and the Miami Music Association (MMA). Franz Welser-Möst will conduct two consecutive programs in one weekend, titled Fate & Freedom, in February 2015 featuring symphonies by Beethoven and Shostakovich. The first program is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”) and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6. The second program pairs Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Mr. Welser-Möst commented, “The dream of freedom inspired the founding of our society. Political and social freedom is presented so emotionally and clearly in Beethoven’s music. By listening to the music of Beethoven and Shostakovich in juxtaposition, we experience their ideas of freedom from different eras, yet from today’s perspective.” Mr. Welser-Möst conducts two performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 (“Tragic”) in March 2015. When Mahler played through the piece on the piano for his wife, Alma, after it was completed in 1904, she said, “Of all his works this was the most personal…. We were both in tears … so deeply did we feel this music and the sinister premonitions it disclosed.” Giancarlo Guerrero begins the season leading two concerts in November 2014 with guest artist Miloš Karadagić in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, for guitar and orchestra. The program also includes Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, Respighi’s Fountains of Rome, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol.
The four-week season concludes with three performances of Orff’s crowd-pleasing Carmina Burana and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with Nadine Sierra, soprano, Anthony Roth Costanzo, countertenor, Stephen Powell, baritone, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, prepared by Cleveland Orchestra Director of Choruses Robert Porco, and the Miami Children’s Chorus, prepared by its director,Timothy Sharp. The opening performance in this series, on March 26, is part of the Arsht Center’s 2014-2015 John S. and James L. Knight Masterworks Season – Classical Music Series. The Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus’s 1975 Sony recording of Carmina Burana with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas won a Grammy® Award for Best Choral Performance.
