EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM (also to be provided as a separate writeable pdf document) ________ 7 1. YEAR 11 SKI TRIP (Excerpt from Camps and Tours Policy) The Ski Trip to Mount Hotham in Victoria is focused on giving students the opportunity to travel on a sporting and cultural tour to an entirely new environment that will provide very different challenges. Although this trip is open to all other year groups in the secondary school, the majority of participants come directly from Year 11. This trip allows students to experience the thrill of skiing and living in the alpine environment. They need to live, cooperate, and share responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their peers. They face physical exhaustion daily, which needs to be balanced with the necessity to live and cooperate in close proximity with other students. At the conclusion of the skiing part of the trip, students experience the culture of Melbourne, through visiting the Queen Victoria Markets, the central shopping precinct, attending an AFL game at the MCG, and visiting the joys of Lygon Street at night. Expected Outcomes a. Improved self-confidence through the mastery of a new skill in an alpine environment. b. Improved awareness of the safety of self and others through an appreciation of the Alpine Responsibility Code. c. Resilience in the face of physical and emotional exhaustion. d. A sense of community in the daily life of a large group of people travelling together. The ski tour has taken more than a thousand of our students over the past 16 years and is embedded in the culture of St Mark’s. The lead School values are: Confidence and Responsibility. 2
St Mark’s Ski Trip - 2021 2. COVID–19 In the current state of COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria, and border control, we would not be able currently to run the 2021 ski trip to Mt. Hotham, Victoria. But with 7 months until the trip, we are hopeful that restrictions will ease, and borders will open, and we can travel to Victoria with minimal risk. We will abide by any recommended travel guidelines from the World Health Organisation and state and federal governments, to ensure that we have the health and wellbeing of the staff and students as a priority. In case of a cancellation of the trip due to another outbreak, we would make this decision in advance of any financial loss to parents and families. This decision would be made in accordance with the cancellation process outlined by our travel agent. It is my intention to plan the 2021 ski trip as per previous years which will put us in the best position to make informed decisions regarding the trip next year. 3. MT HOTHAM If you’re looking for fun in the snow, the premier place to go has to be – MT HOTHAM! Mt Hotham is the highest ski village in Australia, with the highest natural snow falls in Victoria, a huge range of levels in ski terrain, and a high-tech snow making and grooming system that guarantees reliable ski conditions. Mt Hotham also allows you to live on the mountain and experience the true alpine village atmosphere. The ski terrain ranges from a good choice of beginner and intermediate runs, to death-defying double-black runs designed to elevate the pulse rate. 4. ACCOMMODATION - THE ARLBERG HOTEL The Arlberg Hotel offers some of the best value accommodation on the mountain. Situated near the Summit and Village Chair Lift, beginners can step out the front door and begin mastering their first snow plough turns right from the first minute. Beginner’s slopes are situated nearby. Alternatively, the more competent skiers and snow boarders can head across to the other side of the mountain for some black runs. The Arlberg Hotel is a self-contained, “on snow resort” with ensuite bathrooms, mini kitchens, and TVs in all apartments. Its location makes it very handy to both ski lifts and the main village area. 5. THE SKIING Mt Hotham offers some of the best natural snow conditions in Australia. It backs this up with excellent snow-making machines that now cover a large portion of the mountain. We are offering 6 full days of skiing, which will provide excellent opportunity for all ranges of ability. Ski School Instructors will take the students for an introductory lesson on Day 1, and the students will continue to attend their compulsory lesson each day for an hour and a half. This allows the students to develop the basic skills, as well as explore different areas of the mountain. It also allows the students the rest of the day to practise and learn the new skills. This enables us to provide best practice for the students and minimise the risk of injury. 6. COST OF TOUR (Subject to change – please see below) Student costing (approximately) $2,700 Full Package (includes GST) $1,950 Full Package, less airfare (includes GST) The price above is based on approximately 60 students and staff and may increase if students withdraw and/or lift pass prices change. Refunds may be offered if a student is withdrawn, but the amount is dependent on the number of days left until the departure date, and if a replacement can found. Further information, and a Parent Information Evening, will follow during Term 1 2021. However, should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me at School on 9403 1355 or via email at psquire@stmarks.wa.edu.au. 3
