SIMTAP: The EU-PRIMA call What PRIMA is? An integrated Research and Innovation Programme on food systems and water resources implemented by PRIMA Foundation 500 million euro budget 11 EU Countries, 8 SEMCs and the EC First calls: Early 2018 S1 - Transnational Calls managed & financed by PRIMA (Union contribution) S2 - Transnational Calls managed by PRIMA & financed by Participating States at national level S3 - Activities of Participating States managed and financed at national level “SIMTAP Prima Project”, Fronte et al., 2019 - Pordenone, 13-14 febbraio 2019

SIMTAP: The EU call Thematic area 2: Sustainable farming systems under Mediterranean environmental constraints Topic 1.2.3 - Developing farming systems able to generate income, to create employment and to contribute to a balanced territorial development General objective of the project: to develop a profitable and environmentally-friendly Self-sufficient Integrated Multi-Trophic AquaPonic (SIMTAP) system, able to improve the production of food (vegetables and seafood) in rural areas of Mediterranean countries SIMTAP is a labour-intensive (low level of automation and mechanisation), and environment-friendly system “SIMTAP Prima Project”, Fronte et al., 2019 - Pordenone, 13-14 febbraio 2019

SIMTAP: The “core” concept Concept • “Controlled ecosystem-like” mechanism • “Live prey poly-culture” unit Goal: Occupying as much as possible ecological niches for maximising biomass production Tools: identifying and combining the most adequate organisms: • filter feeders: fed with microalgae • deposit feeders: fed by solid fish wastes • others (?) Live prey poly-culture unit Di © Hans Hillewaert, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=8104308 “SIMTAP Prima Project”, Fronte et al., 2019 - Pordenone, 13-14 febbraio 2019
SIMTAP: The “core” bottleneck & challenges Bottleneck & challenges • live prey reproduction management • live prey harvesting method • large surface requirement • hydraulic flows management • Biomass production Live prey poly-culture unit Di © Hans Hillewaert, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=8104308 “SIMTAP Prima Project”, Fronte et al., 2019 - Pordenone, 13-14 febbraio 2019
SIMTAP: other issues to be addressed Issues to be addressed • End product quality • Resources & Energy efficiency use evaluation • Marketing and commercial strategies • Economic, social and environmental sustainability (LCA) • Communication and dissemination strategies Live prey poly-culture unit Di © Hans Hillewaert, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=8104308 “SIMTAP Prima Project”, Fronte et al., 2019 - Pordenone, 13-14 febbraio 2019

Conclusion • We are aware that sustainable production systems cannot commercially compete yet with open field production system (SIMTAP system included) • However, while open field production system cannot be sustained still for long, the sustainable production systems represent the only solution to the future challenges (IMTAs & similar) • We still have to work hard to make sustainable systems effective, but no further hesitation are allowed “SIMTAP Prima Project”, Fronte et al., 2019 - Pordenone, 13-14 febbraio 2019
