SHUTTLECORK2021 Auction Lots 4 2021 FUND-A-NEED PROGRAM Engaging children in the wonders of art has been a primary mission of the Nelson-Atkins since it opened its doors in 1933. Since that time, hundreds of thousands of children have discovered the transformative power of creativity in hands-on experiences that brought them face-to-face with masterpieces spanning 5,000 years of history. At the beginning of 2020, the museum was poised to serve 55,000 children through field trips, classes and workshops. Suddenly, those tours, classes and workshops were grounded to a halt with the rise of the pandemic. Virtual offerings were quickly assembled, both for children and parents — who just as suddenly became teachers. Through the commitment of the museum’s talented staff, volunteers and artists, virtual tutorials were created to activate these young minds remotely. Children were able to tour the museum from home and ask questions using virtual chat features. And while this necessary pivot has successfully kept children engaged and inspired, it has coincided with a steep decline in financial resources. With no in-person events, special exhibitions or visitors, the museum fulfilled its mission on the strength of staff dedication. But, now, your help is desperately needed. Your support of our Fund-a-Need Program pays for teachers, art materials and high-quality instruction during the most challenging time in the museum’s history. We look forward to a time when it is safe for all of us to be together, but until then, you’re invited to be a part of the solution as the museum continues to provide children with rich and memorable art experiences in a virtual setting. 26

Lisa has created a beautiful 22x30 custom piece depicting penguins from the Kansas City Zoo visiting the Nelson-Atkins. And thanks to Nelson-Atkins Director & CEO Julián Zugazagoitia and Kansas City Zoo Director Randy Wisthoff, Lisa was able to use real video footage to inspire the piece. What started as a light conversation between the two led to a real penguin field trip, assisted by the zoo’s professional animal handlers every waddling step of the way. The penguins were coaxed through Kirkwood Hall, the Impressionist and Baroque galleries, past Monet’s Water Lilies, Caravaggio’s Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness and more - all while a film crew captured each moment.
