ILTM NORTH AMERICA 2019 #JOURNEYDEEPER This week, for ILTM’s Year of Health and Wellness, we pay homage to our coastal home and ask you to #journeydeeper... Life in all parts of the sea is linked. In the 1960s, The USA’s pioneering studies of sea life were the first to persuade a wide audience of the interconnectedness of all life, they showed how human health and well-being ties in with the health of our environment, leading to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970. This year, ILTM North America celebrates the capacious beauty and mysteries of the ocean. From activities designed to calm the flow of your mind, to chances to dive deep into the mind-set of the new North American luxury traveller, our mix of business and friendship, cocktails and conversation, provides the perfect backdrop for you to connect with nature, the industry and each other.
ILTM NORTH AMERICA 2019 LUXE TRAVEL COMPANIES LEAD THE WAY ON PLASTICS-FREE INITIATIVES BY JERI CLAUSING IHG recently announced a company-wide ban on single-use bathroom amenities, becoming the first global hotel company player to do so across all of its properties and brands. It’s a bold move, and one that underscores the momentum travel companies have made over the past few years to move beyond green talk to real action, with major cruise lines, tour operators and hotel chains around the world declaring bans on plastic straws and water bottles. While the move away from plastics has just recently become mainstream, it’s one that has its roots in and continues to be led by the luxury sector. It’s hard to say exactly when or where it began, but small luxury properties and wellness leaders like Six Senses and Aman were among the pioneers, forgoing plastic water bottles and mini bathroom amenities more than a decade ago. For the bigger players, however, change is hard — and expensive. So despite much talk over the last decade about improving environmental protections, more traditional hotel companies have been much slower in implementing green policies. That began to really change over the last two years, with a chain reaction of sorts to announcements by giants like IHG, Hilton and Marriott that they would be phasing out plastic straws and plastic water bottles. IHG took it to the next level in June with its vow to ban mini-size bathroom amenities in guest rooms across its entire portfolio by 2021. The company says the switch to bulk-sized items will mean the removal of 200 million miniatures per year. As with the hospitality sector, expedition and small-ship luxury lines are generally the furthest ahead among cruise lines, reflecting their smaller fleets. Lindblad was an early pioneer, replacing plastic water bottles in 2007 with reusable stainless steel bottles that can be refilled at filtered water stations. And last year the line announced it had completed a campaign to replace 100% of single use plastic on all of its ships. Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises have an agreement with Vero Water to supply water onboard in glass bottles, and eventually to provide each passenger with their own re-usable Vero Water bottle. Starting in April, Oceania ships were outfitted with still and sparkling water distillation systems which are expected to eliminate an estimated three million plastic bottles per year when fully installed.
ILTM NORTH AMERICA 2019 Luxury line Seabourn Cruises has recently eliminated plastic bottles for shore excursions, instead offering glass bottles that can be brought back to the ship for cleaning and refilling after the tour. On the rivers, Uniworld last year eliminated plastic bottles, putting glass bottles in staterooms for onboard consumption and giving each guest a refillable bottle to take on excursions. AmaWaterways, likewise, has replaced in-room plastic bottles with glass and it now hands out cartons rather than plastic bottles to guests going on day trips. Among tour operators, adventure companies like G Adventures led the charge against plastic water bottles. And this year, The Travel Corporation was among others joining the movement, removing all single- use plastic bottles from the coaches used by its Luxury Gold, Insight Vacations, Trafalgar and other brands. Even airlines, perhaps the biggest users of plastic, are beginning to make serious strides. Air New Zealand, for instance, recently removed plastic water bottles from its premium cabins. It is also removing all individual sauce containers system wide and is set to roll out coffee cups made from plants rather than plastic. While it’s nice to think that all the efforts are altruistic, the latest big push for environmentally and socially responsible policies across the travel industry is driven by a number of business factors, including that all so important millennial factor. For instance, after Hilton last year announced an aggressive programme to cut its environmental footprint in half and double its social impact investments, the company’s vice president of corporate responsibility, Max Verstraete, said the initiatives underscored the importance they play in recruiting and retaining millennial employees. “Today’s labor pool is a challenging labor pool,” he told Travel Weekly. “These younger generations, they want their employers to do the right thing. … They are more likely to stay with a company that is doing the right thing. They are more likely to stay and to be engaged. This is a very important business reason for doing these things.” Whatever the reason, it’s good news for the earth.
ILTM NORTH AMERICA 2019 ASK THE SPEAKER Photo: Mike Johnson hnson Photo: Mike Jo Dr. Tierney Thys is a National Geographic Explorer, biologist, filmmaker and Ambassador of the Oceans! We were super excited to find out all about nature’s hidden powers. When did your love of nature start? I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love being outdoors exploring the natural world. When I was two, if you’d asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have said “OUTDOORS”. I was born in California, in the SF Bay Area and my parents would take me and my sisters to the beaches of Santa Cruz on the weekends when we were little. We’d go rafting and hiking during the holidays. Later I moved to a tiny town in Vermont and lived next to a beautiful brook where I spent many hours having fish nibble on my toes and watching dragonflies. This love of biology fueled my research interests in college where I had the chance to visit Catalina Island and conduct research in the kelp forests, do internships for the Smithsonian in the Chesapeake Bay and also explore Australia and the Great Barrier Reef. All these experiences whetted my desire to pursue marine sciences in graduate school and for my career. What is neurobiophilia? Our species evolved through intimate and inextricable relationships with the nonhuman world. The natural world, the wilderness, is deeply embedded in who we are as a species. We naturally affiliate with other forms of life. To separate ourselves from the natural world and live strictly within the confines of our built environments places us in peril of losing a large part of our identity, and with it, our mental sanity and physical health.
ILTM NORTH AMERICA 2019 Related to biophilia—a term first put forth by psychoanalyst Eric Fromm and later popularised by Harvard biologist and author E.O. Wilson to describe our innate connection to nature—neurobiophilia examines specifically the role nature plays on our cognitive abilities and mental wellbeing. What are the biggest challenges in ocean conservation right now? We are simply pouring in too much unwanted waste (e.g. plastics, chemical pollutants, carbon dioxide) and pulling out too many valuable materials (e.g. overfishing, deep-sea minerals, precious habitats). These trends are continuing to worsen as global populations and energy demands rise. If we don’t act now the problems will only increase. Americans spend 90% of their time indoors. What three tips would you give to city dwellers and office workers to change this? 1 / I’ve got two words of advice: get outdoors. Look at your meeting schedule and see if there is a way to shift some of your meetings to happen while you walk together with your office mates in the park. 2 / Bring plants into your office space and take care of them. See if you can grow some food or spices even in a large pot—you’d be surprised what fun that can be. Their silent green living presence does more good than you can imagine and can remind you of the beauty and calming effect of natural organisms. 3 / Try to walk outdoors on your way to and from work. You don’t need to park right next to the entrance of your job. Try parking a couple of blocks away and get in a little walk before you need to be indoors all day. At break time, go outside and walk around too if you can. Our events are all about building lifelong relationships, how does this intersect with your role? All of us already have a lifelong relationship with the natural world. We need to acknowledge and nurture that hugely vital bond by regularly going outdoors. Exploring outside, visiting parks, getting the sand or soil under our feet and into our hands, swimming in the sea, smelling the lupin blooming in the mountains, watching clouds skirt across the sky and feeling sunlight on our skin, listening to frogs at night or the dawn chorus of birds at sunrise—all these activities can recalibrate our minds, reignite our deepest joys and remind us what it means to be human; one species on this planet of millions. We are part of an epic four billion-year-old story of life. We are only here because of all the intrepid fantastic life that came before us and we can only write our next exciting chapter with nature by our side. All lasting, meaningful relationships are built on the premise of love and respect. The forces of nature have graced us with our precious existence. Let’s return the favor. As poet Mary Oliver once wrote, “What will you do with your one wild and precious life?”
ILTM NORTH AMERICA AMERICA 2019 2019 THE ZERO JOURNEY BY MARÍA PELLICER The world is changing faster than We have been talking about sustainability and ever.
