CITY OF FREDERICIA HISTORY AND AUTHENTICITY THE MOST WELL-PRESERVED RAMPARTS IN NORTHERN EUROPE Fredericia was established as a fortress town in 1650. On the landside, the town was laid out in circular form with nine large moated bastions. On the waterfront, the town had a somewhat weaker fortification line together with a citadel as its last defense. Fredericia was planned as a fortress town and the streets within the ramparts are all regular and entirely perpendicular. Fredericia has been of great importance in the history of Denmark. Best known is the great mili- tary victory for Denmark that occurred in Fredericia in 1849. The fortifications were dismantled in 1909 and the green ramparts converted into a large public park. Today, it is possible to walk along the entire ramparts and view the beautiful nature by the Little Belt. THE FIRST EVER MONUMENT TO HONOR THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER The Brave Soldier is a statue of a proud Danish soldier, which honors the military importance that Fredericia once had. It is located at the main entrance to the city and serves as the main starting point for visitors standing by the ramparts.
THE ROYAL JELLING MOUNDS, RUNIC STONES AND CHURCH HOME OF THE VIKING KINGS The village of Jelling is home to Europe’s most striking Viking Age monuments: two large barrows and two runic stones erected by kings Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth. Royal Jelling is a modern and interactive visitor center under the auspices of the National Museum of Denmark. Guests can explore the exciting story of the Viking Age and learn more about the transition to Christianity in Denmark as well as the Danish kings. WORLD HERITAGE UNESCO FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS The eighth-century Jelling Monuments – two runic stones by the Jelling Church and two mighty ro- yal burial mounds to the north and south of the church – came under UNESCO patronage in 1994. The Church of the Moravian Brethren is characterized by simplicity and is the largest church hall in Denmark without supporting beams. UNESCO AND ONE-OF-A-KIND ARCHITECHTURE From an architecturally point of view, the town style of Christiansfeld is unique. A strict and harmonic architecture forms the framework of a calm and green town. With its straight streets, beautiful buildings and the outstanding and beautiful church square, Christiansfeld is an architectural gem. These unique chracterictics meant that Christiansfeld was added to the esteemed list of world heritage UNESCO sites in 2015. Distance from Fredericia: 42 km Duration of transport by bus: 35 min
