AUSTRALIAN ICONS With Australia Day coming up, we thought we’d put together a list of things that are quintessentially Australian. Nancy-Bird Walton: Our elegant aviatrix pioneered the way for female flyers. Don Bradman: Cricket’s greatest batsman, ‘The Don’ was a willow- wielding prodigy. AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson: Who’d have guessed that a Melbourne lawyer would turn out to be among a new nation’s best-loved poets? ‘The Man’ (12) is probably Australia’s most recited poem, while Banjo’s story of a swagman down on his luck (13) is our unofficial national anthem. Corroboree: An early addition to Aussie English; from Dharug garabari. My country: A homesick Dorothea Mackellar expressed her love for a “sunburnt country” while she was living in England in 1904. The Southern Cross: Recognisable to Aussie travellers, the Southern Cross is a reminder of home. Ned Kelly: Australia’s most loved and infamous bushranger. Many Aussies believe his last words before his 1880 hanging in a Melbourne jail were “such is life”. That’s a myth, but it does represent the easy going Aussie ethos. Animals unique to Australia: Kangaroo, koala, wallaby, platypus, wombat, echidna, quokka, dingo, kookaburra, emu, Tasmanian devil, sugar glider, bandicoot, blue-tongued lizard, cockatoo, lyrebird, cassowary, tawny frogmouth, blue-ringed octopus. The list goes on and that’s not even counting the numerous snakes and spiders! Landmarks: Sydney Opera House and bridge, Uluru, Bondi Beach, The Great Ocean Road, Kimberly Ranges, Dog on the Tuckerbox, Ningaloo Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Monkey Mia, Nullarbor Plain, Wave Rock, Simpson Desert, and the Tocumwal Blowhole (just kidding, but hopefully we made you chuckle!). Give light and people will find the way – Ella Baker 8 Tocumwal Flyer January 2021
TOC ROTARY NEWS WAAAF Creek Walk The State Member of Parliament, Helen Dalton visited with Toc Rotarians during November re funding of the Creek Walk Project. Some of her comments included” it was a huge project” and that “she would be happy to provide support for any application to the State Government.” Detailed drawing have now been received from the Artist for the Outdoor museum. They are just been checked by Council. Toc Rotarians were impressed by the concepts and drawings that were on display at the successful Xmas Party. Hopefully in the next issue of the flyer they can be made available for everyone to see the work of the Artists. Op Shop The Op shop is progressing well with lots of items being donated by the community. In terms of the takings, we had our best ever month in the new premises for November. We are getting requests for fridges, washing machines and would you believe garden pots. So if you have any that you no longer require, then please consider donating them to the shop. The array of items on offer is expanding all the time. Books seem to be a bit of a hit lately and request for camping gear as the campers return. You nearly need to visit the shop on a weekly basis as items are just coming in and going out just as fast as they are received. Thought of Volunteering? We are still in need of further volunteers to assist in running the shop and picking up goods. If you have a couple of hours a week that you could contribute, then please call Club President Kerry Davies on 0428965145 HUNTER’S HAVEN After a difficult year, we have donated been fortunate enough to have the funds to donate $1000 each to Can Assist and Tocumwal Swimming Pool. 10 Tocumwal Flyer January 2021
It is now Summer and the weather has been very strange with highs in the 40s and then back to 19, hard to know what to do. From January on the weather seems to settle down to hot sunny days so watering is most important. After the Christmas rush is over and your guests have gone, take a deep breath and have a look at your garden. The best time to water is in the cool of the morning or early evening and it is also a more comfortable time to do a bit of weeding and deadheading. Increase watering of roses and shallow-rooted plants such as lemon trees and camellias, which are prone to becoming thirsty when conditions are dry. Check the mulch on your garden beds and after a good water top your mulch up to help retain moisture. Don't forget to pick your vegies as the more you pick the more they will produce. It is probably too hot now to plant any more so just enjoy what you have. Some of the creepers like wisteria, potato creeper and passionfruit may be getting a bit rampant so these can be trimmed back to keep tidy. Deadhead your roses and feed with a good organic fertiliser to keep them flowering through the season. If you have hanging baskets that are wilting a bit in the heat, move them into a more shaded spot. If your hanging baskets have dried out try filling a bucket with water and sit the hanging basket in the bucket overnight so it can fill back with moisture. You can mist indoor plants with water to increase humidity and deter mites and other insect pests. It is the holiday season so after watering sit back and enjoy all the hard work you did earlier in the year to get the garden looking as good as it does now. If you feel like a drive Kalangadoo Cottage Nursery has display gardens, pots, plants, a good selection of Twisted Creations stock and lots, lots more. We will be closed from Christmas Eve and will re-open on Wednesday 6th January. Our hours will be the same this year, 10-4 each day and closed on Monday and Tuesday. 11 Tocumwal Flyer January 2021
NOTABLE AUSTRALIANS Sir Douglas Nicholls Douglas Nicholls was an Australian Aboriginal athlete and activist and was the first Aboriginal person to be knighted. He was born on December 9, 1906, at Cummeragunja Aboriginal Reserve, New South Wales. His family belonged to the Yorta Yorta tribe. He received a good primary education but was forced to move away at age 14 to find work. At the time the government made many Aboriginal children move away from their families. In the late 1920s Nicholls earned a spot on the Australian rules football team in Northcote, Victoria. He was the only Aboriginal athlete who played in the Victorian Football Association at the time. He established the first Aboriginal Church of Christ in Australia and was ordained a pastor in 1945. Nicholls was made a Member of the British Empire in 1957 and knighted in 1972. In 1976 he became governor of South Australia. Nicholls died on June 4, 1988, at Mooroopna, Victoria. Jeannie Gunn Jeannie Gunn was an Australian novelist, teacher and Returned and RSL volunteer. She was the author of The Black Princess, published in 1905, and We of the Never Never, published in 1908. During and after World War I she worked tirelessly to support the servicemen of Monbulk, Victoria who she referred to as "my boys." She was awarded an OBE in 1939, "in recognition of her services to Australian Literature and to the disabled soldiers and their dependents." In 1948 she began to work on a book recording all the details of the volunteers from Monbulk who had served in the Boer War, the Boxer Rebellion and World War One. Gunn presented her completed manuscript to the Monbulk RSL in 1953 and the book, My Boys - A Book of Remembrance, was published for the first time in 2000. Jeannie Gunn died on the 9th June 1961 and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery. 12 Tocumwal Flyer January 2021
FINLEY DEMENTIA ALLIANCE We are proud and thankful that we have been successful in gaining a Grant from the Dementia Australia’s DFC Community Engagement Program, that will enable the Finley Dementia Alliance group to present a program with the help of the Finley TAFE campus via the School system in Finley that will help students to understand Dementia, particularly if there is someone in their family living with dementia. There is a need to dispel the stigma around dementia, especially for those who live in their community, in their own home they have spent a great part of their lives within their local community with family and friends. The Finley Dementia alliance group want to support the younger generation to gain a better understanding for people living with dementia in our community. Rural communities have the advantage that country folk naturally want to help their neighbours, but there is still the fear and misunderstanding around dementia for those living in the community. This grant will help us assist to raise a generation of understanding and caring young people within our communities, who will be able to assist and understand people living with dementia to stay in their own home and have a meaningful life within their community. Tocumwal Public School Newsletter Highlights The best of academic, artistic and sporting talents was showcased at the Tocumwal Public School Presentation Evening held on Tuesday 8th December. Thomas White was awarded the 2020 Tocumwal Pharmacy Prize for Pupil of the Year after an excellent year with his studies. In his annual address, Principal Mr Darren White, paid tribute to the staff, students and families of the school community who stood strong in support of each other during this most challenging year of COVID 19 interruptions. “The onset of remote learning created many challenges and obstacles. Our staff were placed under immense pressure in an unfamiliar environment and they faced many new demands. With this in mind the words adapt, overcome and conquer is how I think of that period of uncertainty. Staff rallied and created some innovative learning opportunities for our students. A big positive is that is created opportunities to learn new skills that we have now adopted as part of our standard practices going forward. “Our ability to cope with this major upheaval to our school life was made possible by the outstanding qualities of our teachers. The commitment to the students’ continuity of learning and their well-being despite their own personal challenges was commendable and full of integrity. I thank all of our teaching, support and office staff for their work that went over and beyond the classroom on a daily basis.” The Presentation Evening was held on the school oval in order to fulfil COVID restrictions. Celebrating a successful year members of Tocumwal Can Assist gathered for an early Christmas lunch on 4th December. 36 of our 60 members were in attendance. President Roberta had arranged the decorations and created a truly festive feel for attendees. MC - Geoff Westmore opened proceedings and introduced President Roberta Wereta. New members were introduced and given their welcome letter and Can Assist lanyard. New member Suzanne Munro contacted Roberta the next day, “yesterday was a great day, your special touches were amazing – tables etc. I really love what was in our envelopes – l feel so proud to be part of Can Assist.” Roberta congratulated members on a great year given the challenging circumstances of 2020 with coronavirus. Some of the highlights of the year were the outstanding support of donations from local businesses for the Fundraising Dinner in September which raised just over $3,000. This certainly assisted the ability of the branch to provide financial support to members of our community. This year Can Assist Tocumwal has increased the number of community members we are supporting by 85% and increased our membership by 70%. Being named branch of the month and receiving $3,000 to assist with payment of green slips for community members with cancer was another financial boost. The branch acknowledges the great publicity through media outlets particularly in local media Toc Flyer and Southern Riverina News. Tocumwal Can Assist recipe book is ready for launching and a huge thanks was extended to Gayle Chenoweth for her drive in taking the idea through to a finished product. Thanks, was also extended to Lorraine 20 Tocumwal Flyer January 2021
Blain for her support to Gayle in drafting the book. Members enjoyed an absolutely delicious Christmas lunch created by Shane and his team at the Farmer’s Arms Hotel Tocumwal. Members enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate their contributions which do make a difference for many in our community. MC Geoff Westmore hosted a very creative and entertaining KK session to finalise the event. Can Assist Tocumwal extends appreciation and thanks for the generosity of our community support in 2020 and look forward to continuing with partnerships in our community that benefit and support community members undertaking cancer treatment. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. 21 Tocumwal Flyer January 2021
