LUNCH & LEARN GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY RABBI EMERITUS Lunch and Learn with Alyssa Henning The theme of this month’s bulletin is “giving back to our community.” Isn’t that part of the essential core of Judaism? That rhetorical response of “yes” reminds us that we are February 6th as much a part of our community as any other person, irrelevant of one’s “race, creed or color.” As such, we know how essential it is to make our community a better place for Jewish Bioethics at the End of Life with Alyssa Henning, PhD, JD all persons. EARLY CHILDHOOD Sitting on the bemah at Shabbat this morning, surrounded by this week’s Kings and Queens assisting me in holding the Tzedakah container, one little girl whispered “I just did a mitzvah”! “Yes, you did”, I responded! A little boy next to her said, “You just helped someone else”! The exchange between the two children touched my heart. I proceeded to follow the class back to their classroom to read a book. The PJ Library Book, 26 Big Things Small Hands Can Do by Coleen Paratore was a big hit. We went through the alphabet and spoke about the ABC’s of mitzvot. Performing good deeds is something even the littlest among us can do. STACEY KATZ EARLY CHILDHOOD We took the concept further and walked around the school looking for ways to make things DIRECTOR better. My little friends pointed out things they could do to help each other while one even said “we have to help the school and neighborhood we live in”! We discovered the recycling bins and described ways to help our planet while pointing to our Recycle, Reduce and Reuse Board. We discovered all the great activities and projects that can be done by using recycled materials. Tikkun Olam….Repairing our World seemed to be the central theme for these children. We briefly talked about this Jewish value they innately just learned as they giggled with its name. The time spent with these children, was proof that they are truly little sponges with imaginations waiting to be explored. What does Tikkun Olam mean to you? FEBRUARY 15TH – 18TH Peace River JUST LENDING A HELPING HAND BROTHERHOOD Happy New Year from the Temple Brotherhood! If you haven’t attended Camping a Temple Brotherhood event in the past, this new year presents several opportunities to do so. The Temple Brotherhood has always embraced the concept of tikkun olam. We all know what tikkun olam means. We hear it all the time in services. However, this month we also learned of gimiluthasadim. Many of us may not know what “gimilut hasadim” means (yours truly, included). So we just went to our favorite internet search engine and looked it up. Don’t worry, we’re not keeping it a secret.
