What is SGSAH? • Founded in 2014 • World’s first national Graduate School for the Arts & Humanities • 16 HEI members plus more than 100 non- academic founding supporters • Opens up Scotland’s resources to enhance doctoral training for our HEI members’ students • Provides for c1750 doctoral researchers across Scotland sgsah.ac.uk

Four Pillars 1. Foundation: Professional Researcher Training foundational to the development of the professional researcher, normally delivered through the home-HEI. Content includes planning and managing research; research ethics, integrity, values and behaviour; intellectual property and copyright; data management; and communications. sgsah.ac.uk
Four Pillars 2. Core: Leadership Programme A stepped developmental course which includes: equality & diversity, wellbeing, communication, fellowships, grant writing, career pathways, and publishing. Also includes the Annual Summer School and the Year 2 SGSAH DTP Symposium. This feature is key to cohort development and peer community. sgsah.ac.uk

SGSAH AHRC DTP Studentships 1/ • Competition across Scotland (10 HEIs) • Approx. 60 studentships awarded per year • No quotas of studentships to DTP HEI members or to disciplines, although there is a maximum number of awards for non-UK students (30% of total) sgsah.ac.uk

Strategic Themes & Priority Areas SGSAH funds PhDs across the full range of disciplinary areas supported by the AHRC. For 2021, SGSAH has designated the following strategic themes and priority areas: • Modern Languages • Celtic Languages and Studies • Creative Industries/Economies • Cultural and Heritage Studies • Environmental Humanities • Equalities, Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice within arts and humanities contexts NB. There is no ringfenced funding for these strategic themes and priority areas, and applicants can apply in any subject area. However, we strongly encourage applications within our strategic themes and priority areas, and for applicants to indicate if their applications fall within one or more of them.sgsah.ac.uk
Am I eligible to apply? NATIONALITY • Open to all nationalities, with a 30% cap for International (inc EU) applicants. • NB funding for fees is a UK level – you MUST check with your lead HEI what their policy is for the difference between Home and International fees • Full Scholarship for all awards OFFER OF PLACE • You must have been accepted on to a PhD programme at one of our ten DTP member institutions (conditional or unconditional), and nominated by them. You cannot apply without a nomination from your HEI. ALREADY STARTED? • 50% Funding Rule PART-TIME • At 50% of your time (ie 7 years of funding) sgsah.ac.uk
The application process 1/ You apply directly to SGSAH, but you must have the support of a supervisory team to do so. 1. How will my application be assessed? • Seven discipline specific review panels, consisting of academic staff members from across the DTP consortium • A final moderation panel of Deans of Graduate schools from all ten member HEIs (the ‘DTP Executive’) • The criteria used are detailed in the Competition Guidance sgsah.ac.uk
