DIRECTIONS TO THE VENUE FOR PLANT SUBMISSIONS AND JUDGING From Upper Bukit Timah Road ` Plant Submissions & Judging Venue From Holland Road
RULES OF COMPETITION 1. Participation The orchid plant competition is open to the public. All participants shall abide by competition rules and regulations. 2. Registration ● Exhibitors are encouraged to register their plants online at https://orchidshow.ossea.org.sg ● The Plant Registration App will go live on Tuesday 28 September from 8.00 p.m. ● Exhibitors may enter plants under their name, or under a pseudonym. Corporate or organisational names are allowed, joint entries not allowed. ● Each plant entry will be issued a unique registration number generated online, which must be handwritten in bold by permanent marker pen on a tag firmly secured to the plant and clearly displayed. ● Any query on registration procedures may be sent via email to OSSEA1928@gmail.com. 4. Submission ● Registered plants must be delivered to the designated Plant Submission Point in the National Orchid Garden (NOG) Nursery at Tyersall Road (see Map). o Professional/Nurseryman exhibitors: Wednesday 6 October and Thursday 7 October, 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. o Amateur/Hobbyist exhibitors: Thursday 7 October, 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. ● Registrars will check online registration records to ensure that details entered match the actual plants submitted. Exhibitors shall leave the premises after plant submission. 5. Identification and Verification Registered plants may compete only when they have been identified individually by formally accepted names. OrchidRoots is a recommended web-based tool that helps to facilitate the visual identification of both orchid species and orchid hybrids by name. It may be accessed online at: https://www.orchidroots.com/.
Orchid names are valid only when they have been verified as accepted (and not a synonym) by one or both of the following taxonomic authorities: ● Kew’s World Checklist of Selected Plant Families https://wcsp.science.kew.org/ ● RHS International Orchid Register http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticulturaldatabase/orchidregister/orchidregister.asp 6. Judging ● Judges allocated to respective judging teams will adjudicate only the competition plants arranged by class in those sections the teams are assigned. Each team will be headed by a lead judge and assisted by at least one steward. The lead judge shall ensure that judging is conducted in an orderly, timely manner without prejudice and may exercise the casting vote in the event of a tie. The stewards shall assist judges in identifying and examining all entries under their purview, record the winners in all classes adjudicated by the team, and affix appropriate insignia to those plants. ● Prizes and awards will be granted solely on the basis of merit. Challenge Cups at the discretion of the judges may be given to overall winners in specific categories. Rosettes are given to winners ranked First, Second and Third in every class, but may also be withheld at the discretion of judging teams. The Judges Commendation (JC) may be bestowed in recognition of distinctive attributes of botanical or historical importance. ● OSSEA Award Judging will be conducted for truly outstanding plants nominated by certified/accredited OSSEA Judges. ● The Judging Chairs shall preside over all judging activities. They shall decide the combining or creation of classes as merited, the classification of any plant difficult to place, the final outcome if a lead judge cannot exercise the casting vote impartially, the shortlist of nominations for award judging, and the mode of judging (by appreciation or point scoring). ● Where more than one plant is potted or mounted, only the best will be judged. For Papilionanthe and strongly terete Papilionanda, up to five plant stems may be potted, which would then be judged collectively as one. ● Except for Phalaenopsis and Oncidium Alliance exhibits, stakes or wires must be unobtrusive, must not touch any part of any flower (including the pedicel) and must not extend beyond the first flower on any inflorescence.
7. Rejection Plants considered unacceptable for competition and exhibition include newly jungle collected, disbudded, infected by disease, infested with pests/parasites, or otherwise unpresentable for lack of grooming. 8. Disclaimer All plants will be handled with care, but exhibitors must bear in mind that they participate at their own risk. The show organisers shall not be liable to exhibitors for any loss or damage in respect of plants submitted. 9. Disqualification Any breach of these rules may lead to disqualification of the plant or the participant concerned. Any appeal, request for clarification or complaint must be directed to the Judging Chairs or show organisers, as appropriate, whose decision shall be taken as final. 10. Collection Exhibited plants will be de-registered for collection by their respective exhibitors when the show closes on Sunday 17 October. o Amateur/Hobbyist exhibitors: Sunday 17 October, 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. o Professional/Nurseryman exhibitors: Monday 18 October, 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. OSSEA Show Committee K Gopalan, Chair of Judges Dr Teoh Eng Soon, Alternate Chair Dr Emrys Chew, Vice Chair Lim Chiauw, Registration Lim Guat Bee, Secretariat
