8400 Vamo Road • Sarasota, FL 34231 • (941) 966-5611 September 2021 NICHOLS’ NOTES Last year, in many of my Covid-19 updates, I wrote about the New Normal as we emerged from the pandemic. What would this new normal look and feel like? I believe we are seeing what this new normal is looking like as we still are struggling to get the pandemic behind us. Supply chains have been disrupted so items such as refrigerators, stoves, furniture, and construction materials are sometimes taking months to come in once they are ordered. The labor supply has been diminished due to hundreds of thousands of nurses, aides, service workers, and others having left these positions to Bay Village work in other fields or make a choice to be unemployed. There you can take a breather before you continue your Fitness journey. It is always important to take care of your health so you feel better and are more energized. You also have the option to work out in the privacy of your home with all the great exercise classes that are being shown on TV/ Channel 195. Starting in September we are teaching all exercise classes in the Auditorium. You will still be able to use the cardio and strength equipment located in the Wellness Center during construction. Keep your eyes and ears open for any updates and changes, I am sure you can expect a few of those. Remember, I am always available to you under my extension 4033 if you need any advice or help with your fitness routine.
3 This new feature in the Vibes is for any Bay Village Committee or Group to post Committees & Groups information they would like to go out to all residents. Submit your information to Diana by the 23rd of the month. • The Bay Village Book Group Meeting will be held Thursday, September 23rd at 1:00 in the Board Room. Sally Kall will lead the discussion of our first book. Copies of “The Henna Artist” by Alka Joshi are available in our library. • The Environmental Committee maintains an information board in the Resident Entrance. There are a variety of interesting articles to read. This committee also sponsors an environmental movie one Monday afternoon once a month in the auditorium. • The Building & Grounds Committee is giving us regular updates on the construction of The Tides. At this time, the roof is finished and the windows and doors are being installed. The project on track for completion by the end of the year when permitting will begin. This process can require patience, so residents probably won’t be able to move in until late March. • The Socrates Seekers Group will meet Saturday, September 18th at 3:00 in the Board Room. • Brain Games will be moving to 2:00 in the afternoon on September 13th and 27th in the auditorium. This group has been having fun and learning a lot! Renovation Report September means the start of the renovation on the main Bay Village Campus. If you have ever had any work done on your home in the past, you know there are some “growing pains”. But any temporary changes will be worth it in the end! Bay Village will update residents with Eric’s Construction Updates that you receive in your boxes, but we will also include information here in the newsletter. The third floor terrace will be the first project started. There will be a crane located near the chiller that will be used to get equipment and supplies up to the third floor. There will be scaffolding located on the sidewalk by the pool that leads down to the parking lot. There will also be scaffolding near the driveway that leads up to the main parking garage. But don’t worry, there will be safe access to the parking garage and the sidewalk near the pool will remain open. Construction workers will use outside stairwells to access the third floor, not the elevators. Next up is the poolside café area. The main exit to the pool area will be closed. But you can access the pool area through the wellness center and there will be automatic doors placed at that entrance. If you usually access the pool from the dock area, there will be a new sidewalk put in to give you easier access. The outdoor “Chillin & Grillin” area will now be open 5 days a week for lunch as the Poolside Café will be closed. The third area to be started in September is the Palms Event Center. While this construction is going on you will not be able to go out the door near the ALF to access the pond. The best way to access the pond will be the entrance near the shuffleboard courts.

8400 Vamo Road Sarasota, FL 34231 (941) 966-5611 CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Rev. Dr. Chuck Moffett To drive your car looking ONLY in the rear-view mirror can be hazardous to your health. To drive your car looking ONLY through the windshield also can be hazardous to your health. To journey in full health is to be thankful for all that has brought you to your present location, as well as to be thoroughly aware of the excitement which lies ahead. In the next 15 months, all of us at Bay Village will need to be aware of our “rear-view mirrors” and our “windshields.” Construction and creation, renovation and renewal of our present and new facilities will call on each of us to stand firm on our foundation, while we stand on tip-toe to see where God’s Spirit is leading us. Our Mission Statement needs always to be in our “rear-view” mirror” (“Established on Christian principles”) as we look through our “windshield” to the road ahead as we continue to (“provide meaningful community life with continuing care”). The following principles are ways to provide full health for all of us along our daily journey: -Affirming people’s potential is more important than reminding them of their brokenness. -Reconciliation should be a higher value than making judgments. -Gracious behavior is more important than right belief. -Inviting questions is more valuable than supplying answers. --Encouraging the personal search is more important than group uniformity. -Meeting actual needs is more important than maintaining institutions. -Peacemaking is more important than power. -Equality of ALL is more God-like than domination over ANY. -Life in this world is part of Eternal Life, not just a preparation for Eternal Life. Each of us is called to be committed to taking “the road less travelled.”
