We are seeing high speeds in urban areas under Alert Level 4, particularly around Hamilton City in the past few days. There may be less traffic on the roads, but this does not give people the excuse to speed. There is increased numbers of pedestrians and children walking or riding bikes. Speeding vehicles is a risk, endangering the lives of those around them. The last thing we want is to see is a crash where people are injured and may require hospitalisation. Police continue to remain highly visible in the community and will be enforcing the speed limits. Any motorists travelling over the speed limit can expect to receive an infringement notice. Whatever your view on speed is understand that when things go wrong, they go wrong FASTER. This month we have a special focus on your speed. Stay under the limit and you won't get a fine. Any death on our roads is too many. Everybody needs to step up and do their part. Even when speed doesn't cause the crash, the speed on impact can be the difference between walking away or being carried away in an ambulance. Come on New Zealand, it’s about time people start taking road safety seriously. We want noughts, not crosses. LOCK IT DOWN AFTER LOCKDOWN; 'Remember to #LockItDownAfterLockdown. What do we mean by that? We are sure that a lot of you have been out exercising a daily basis during the lockdown period. Maybe even leaving windows and doors unlocked on your property since someone from your bubble would always be home. Chances are, if you are heading back to work now, so are the burglars. And their next job might be in your living room. It’s important to get back into having good safety and security habits. Lock it or lose it and make sure to #LockItDownAfterLockdown.' P.O. I’d say most of our members have been busy reaching out and checking-in with their community since lockdown began. Many are conducting welfare calls (particularly to their most vulnerable households) but also sending out email and social media updates as well. Others are delivering food parcels, doing grocery shopping for those who cannot, delivering prescriptions, putting out bins, or performing other acts of kindness to help brighten someone’s time at home. And of course, Neighbourhood Supporters across the country are starting to promote this month’s national campaign theme of Mental Health + Wellness which has been an appropriate one given the times. As our below video reminds us, reaching out is one of the simplest but most important things we can be doing right now to support each other. We’re pleased to finally release our new campaign called REACH OUT AOTEAROA which was created with the help of Neighbourhood Supporters from across the country during lockdown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_VsS1ZsGOU Here’s a news article about online fitness classes Manawatu NS is running over lockdown: https://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/300396372/livestreamed-dance-fitness-classes-keeping-people-active-inside-their-bubbles Alivia Prattas Communications Advisor Neighbourhood Support New Zealand Hamilton City Civil Defence Emergency Management has been actively involved in the response to the resurgence of the Delta Variant, Covid 19 outbreak recently.
