WHAT’S ON IN SEPTEMBER 2020 At the time of writing we are hoping and praying that we will be able to return to our normal pattern of Sunday services from 6 September. The services will look and feel different to the ones that we are used to, but we see this as a stepping-stone as we move towards a new normal. So this will be our pattern of Sunday worship: 8:00 – BCP Holy Communion, St. Mary’s 9:15 – Holy Communion, Christ Church 10:45 – Sunday worship (communion on the first Sunday of the month only), St. Mary’s In terms of continuing our online services, there will be a pre-recorded 9:15 service available from Christ Church, and the 10:45 service at St. Mary’s will be live-streamed. The arrangements for the 10:45 service are still being finalised but the service will be ticketed due to restrictions on numbers in the church building, and the tickets will be available via the church website. It’s also worth mentioning that there will be no band or choir at the 10:45 service although we will be using pre-recorded songs from the band on the screen. The arrangements for our Sunday Groups are also being finalised but we’re hoping to offer something for our young people on the Glebe Field during the service. And sadly we won’t be able to offer refreshments after the service either. Please keep an eye on the website for updates on all the above. Daily Prayers Our Daily prayers will continue Monday to Saturday at 10:00 throughout September as we meet via Zoom for a simple online time of prayer which everyone is welcome to join in. The prayer time lasts about 30 minutes, starting with a chance to catch up be- fore a time of shared prayer and reflection. Following on from the prayer time we will be continuing with our 30-minute bible study led by different people from our church community every day. There is a link on the church website to join so come and try it out. Community Cupboard Our food bank continues to be well stocked and we would love to hear from anyone who needs some support, either on a regular ba-sis or just as a one off. To access the foodbank please contact Ali Mackey at ali.mackey@gkchurch.org To find out more about GK Church go to our website www.gkchurch.org.uk 3
INTERREGNUM MESSAGE Stop all the clocks Does anyone else feel as though the world ground to a halt this year? That time changed? W H Auden’s poem conjures up a picture of sadness and loss and perhaps, for you, the time past also has brought its fair measure of sadness. We can never turn back the clock. More than ever, we live in uncertain, challenging and changing times into which we can only move forward, but how do we navigate the uncertainty when so much has already changed? Well, here are a few pointers for you to ponder on as September marches on, the children return to their classrooms and we begin to re-imagine this new season in time. Paul in the bible says he has ‘learnt to be content in all circumstances’. He wrote this from prison before his death so knew what it was to suffer, to be deprived of ‘normal’ life and live with the ‘not knowing’ about the future. We would call this ‘resilience’, the ability to bounce back when situations come at us that leave us floored. Let’s not be reduced by the past but be challenged by it and instead of simply bouncing back, leap forward to what is ahead. Getting up and moving forward is a choice. We can say yes or no in our decision making. The road to life has unexpected turns but we have a choice to follow it. The plans God has for us give us hope if we leave the choice to him. Be the change you want to see in the world. We can’t go back to before pandemic times but we can start where we are and change what is to come. Patience is also a virtue that many of us find a challenge. How do we wait for a better time without complaining? We need to be as patient with ourselves as God is with us. God’s ways are pretty unfathomable while they are still in progress so don’t try to exhaust yourself worrying about what is to come, just live in the now. And most importantly, smile. We are refreshed in the presence of cheerful people, so cheer someone else up each day. Give people around you a reason to hope, a sense of well-being, an expectation that the new world we enter into will be alright because we journey into it together. Paul says in one of his letters that ‘We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed’. This is a very different outcome to that which Auden describes. So take heart this month. The God who gave Paul the courage to move forward, is very much alive, and in the habit of bringing hope in uncertain times to those who seek Him. If you are in need of some hope today and would like to talk to someone, Please don’t hesitate to call the church office on 01580 211739 or leave a prayer request in the box in either church and we will pray for you. Amen Caroline 4
'Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone' Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead, Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong. The stars are not wanted now: put out every one; Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun; Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood; For nothing now can ever come to any good. W H Auden 5
AN UNTIMELY DEATH IN GOUDHURST IN 1910 In 1847, the Scottish physician Sir James Young Simpson first used chloroform as an anaesthetic, testing it on himself. It was administered by dripping the liquid onto a cloth or a sponge held above the face so that the vapours were inhaled, and its effects worked quickly. There were early reports of fatalities due to chloroform, beginning with a 15-year-old girl in 1848. Skill and care were required to differentiate between an effective dose and one that paralysed the lungs, causing death. The use of chloroform spread quickly and, in 1853, it was given to Queen Victoria during the birth of her eighth child, Prince Leopold. I found the following inquest report by accident while researching my family history. The police constable giving evidence at the inquest was my great uncle, James Eversfield, who was living and serving in Goudhurst at the time. The inquest concerned the death of his fellow police constable, James Truphet Saywell, a 35 year old who lived at Riseden. On 21 September 1910 a group of hop-pickers was causing a disturbance at Goudhurst Station. PC Saywell was attempting to quieten things down when he injured his left shoulder. He didn’t take too much notice of the injury until he was unable to use his left arm and he went to see the village doctor. Dr Sealy, advised PC Saywell that it would be necessary to administer chloroform in order to put the shoulder back in place. On Saturday morning 1 October PC Saywell went to Dr Sealy’s surgery, accompanied by PC Eversfield, where he was stripped to the waist and laid on a mattress on the floor. Dr Sealy placed a cloth over his face and poured some chloroform from a bottle onto it. After that the doctor allowed drops to fall onto the cloth at intervals of a few seconds for four or five times. Suddenly Dr Sealy, who was feeling the patient’s right pulse, snatched the cloth from his face and shouted “His heart has stopped”. Despite immediate attempts to resuscitate him, PC Saywell could not be saved. Dr Mapleton, another Goudhurst doctor, was telephoned and summoned to the surgery where death was confirmed and the case was reported to the police. Dr Mapleton subsequently carried out a post-mortem examination and at the inquest he said that “in his opinion death was due to syncope (loss of consciousness) caused or accelerated by the administration of chloroform. There was congestion of all the internal organs and the left of his heart was soft and flabby”. He suggested that when the doctor administered the chloroform his fingers should have been spread out under the cloth and the cloth should have been some five inches above the patient’s face to allow plenty of fresh air so the chloroform was not too strong. The cloth should be placed nearer after a dozen breaths but should never absolutely cover the patient’s face. Giving his evidence, PC Eversfield told the Court that Dr Sealy pulled the stopper out of the chloroform bottle, which was three parts full. The cloth covered the patient’s face and was not pulled off. 6
At that point Dr Sealy said he wanted legal representation before continuing, so the inquest was adjourned. When Dr Sealy gave evidence at the later hearing he said that the statement given that the cloth was not pulled off the patient’s face until he found that his pulse had stopped was inaccurate. The jury found that death was due to misadventure, and added a rider that more care should have been exercised when ministering the chloroform. They expressed their opinion that two qualified medical men should be present when chloroform was given. The Coroner said that a departmental committee on Coroners’ Courts and the Coroners’ work had made a special report expressly recommending that “Two members of the medical profession should always be present when anaesthetic is given. Probably in the course of time this would become law”. Soon after this case, because of the number of deaths recorded, the use of chloroform declined. Today surgery under a general anaesthetic involves a whole team of professionals and, depending on the level of pain or tissue damage, a dislocated shoulder is often corrected without the need for anaesthetic. Thank you Lynette Edwards for sending this in. Caroline Turvey sent in the text on a board from a local church she was visiting (page 5). Lynette also sent in the photo of fish in Goudhurst Pond on page 10 and the baby grass snake on page 13. The last few weeks must have been the time for the snakes to hatch as I have recently found two of them run over on Church Road, Kilndown as they have been making their way to the pond. QUARRY CENTRE August is always a difficult month at the Saturday Shop, the everyday crystal ball has to be replaced by the bigger orbuculum and our clairvoyance powers are tested to the limit. Who’s on holiday, who has a glut of vegetables in their garden, who’s going out for the day, may all sound somewhat trivial, but these points do make a difference in the ordering of the fresh produce, as we are only open on Saturday mornings. Oh well……! Don’t forget we have a range of Eco-Friendly cleaning materials, mostly on a refill basis, this now includes an anti-bacterial, multi surface cleaner. Do you shop online? Do it through easyfundraising.org.uk and raise a free donation for Quarry Centre, every time you shop! https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/ quarrycentre/ At present we only have five supporters for the TW Lotto, we are ‘allowed’ up to 50. The cost is only £1 per week and we get 50% of that. The remaining money goes to various charities supported by TWBC. Look on www.twlotto.co.uk for full details. Plans for refurbishment of the exterior are still ongoing, we have two estimates/quotes and are awaiting a third. It has been suggested that to save all this seemingly incessant painting, the whole place be stripped back to bare timber and wood preservative slapped on it every three years. The building would then look as it did (give or take a bit) when it was erected 140 years ago. Hmmmm… Moving on, preparations for the Nostalgia Day are progressing slowly, as we’ve all had to make so many changes, and we had not set a date, it all seems a bit ‘tomorrow will do’ at present. Just to remind you, 2020 sees the 140th Birthday of the building, the 40th Anniversary of the Quarry Centre and the 20th Anniversary of the Saturday Shop, (not to mention several other anniversaries for the Village Hall and Millennium Green). We will get the event staged at some point. Again, a big THANK YOU to all who are continuing to support the Quarry Centre and the Saturday Shop and thank you to those who we saw at the beginning of ‘lockdown’, but don’t see now, we hope we helped you in some way. The Quarry Centre is a registered Charity, No. 1167410 and any donations made may be Gift Aided, pick up a form at the Saturday Shop. Lynda 8
KILNDOWN GARDENING CLUB By the time this is being read we may have had our first meeting since March, or maybe not! It all depended on how many were willing to venture out. We may be holding our Autumn Flower Show on September 26 or may be not! We may have a meeting in October – who knows? News will filter through by some form of means if it’s a yes or a no! Whatever happens please keep the next Plant Sale in mind, as the weather becomes more autumnal and thoughts turn to rearranging and/or tidying the garden, pot up those unwanted divisions, take a few cuttings, save some seeds for sowing next year. Lynda Shepherd BETTY’S TRACTOR RUN If all goes to plan and we don’t all get ‘locked in’ again, this will be on Sunday October 11, on the Millennium Green from 10am to 12 noonish. The vintage and veteran drivers and tractors(!) will take a route through Bedgebury Pinetum raising funds for Hospice in the Weald. Optimistically refreshments will be available. 9

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS At time of writing I am sitting in a pleasant 23˚C environment, having endured 30-35 and no rain here for weeks. All is becoming brown, the grass, the leaves and even the weeds. Rain is promised, lots of it and has been for days, but none falls here. Black clouds, deluges in Maidstone and south and north and west but none here. Hopefully, by the time you read this, it will have come to Goudhurst or the environmental cost will be high. Like waiting for the rain, we have been waiting for Broadband, but not for days and weeks but three years and still it does not come. But perhaps that at least may change or, so we are told, indeed assured. Finally, an installation team has been allocated and our project is to be signed off in the next few weeks. We must have hope, like we hope also for the rain. If that happens, what happens next? A Goudhurst broadband website will be set up by Openreach where everyone must sign up for their property to be included in the scheme and pledge their Government and county vouchers (subsidy) to the project. If enough of us sign up the project will go ahead, and we are advised we will have superfast fibre broadband by the spring – Spring 2021 apparently. “Pigs will fly” one resident has commented. However, pig or not, if our project does move forward in the next few weeks then we will all need to pledge our voucher online and if sufficient sign up the project will then move forward and deliver our promised superfast broadband free of charge. So, if/when we have systems go, it will be up to all of us (YOU!) to sign up. Apart from the letter you should receive from Openreach, we will try to let everyone know, when and how to sign. Cllr David Knight has been pushing relentlessly over recent months to move the project forward, if you have any questions, check with David.knight@goudhurst-pc.gov.uk. As reported last month, every effort is being made by your Parish Council to ensure the village and parish of Goudhurst remains a thriving place to live and shop and eat. A place of beauty to enliven the heart beyond just the place we call home. Our first High Street Project Zoom meeting was held on July 30th. A follow up with most our retailers and businesses will take place at the end of August, all of whom have signed up to the idea of making the most of the village. Many of our plans and ideas will have to wait for 2021 for implementation because of Covid. The project has a new name “Destination Goudhurst” and we are hoping that those of us who live in the parish will also make full use of what we have where we live, making it our destination too. As a parish, town and county we will now have to digest the latest bright idea from our Central Government. Just as their previous bright idea was a veritable Developers and liars charter it’s now - throw away the rule book and build, build, build, …without planning permission. Because planning regulations and scrutiny (to protect facilities, the environment, neighbours, communities and design) allegedly takes too long and holds up the developers. But wasn’t it the whole point of their last big idea, power to the communities to be more in control of their own lives and prepare their own Neighbourhood Development Plan? Plans which we and many thousands of parishes have devoted the last 3-5 years preparing. So even before the ink is dry and those plans ratified, 12
it seems that they too may be swept away to build, build, build anything, anywhere. Your Parish Council, your neighbouring parishes, towns and county representatives, councillors and we believe MPs too, are appalled. Are we right to be concerned? Together with our Borough Council and Kent Association of Local Government we will scrutinise carefully the proposals and their potential effect. We will then report back and consult on how to respond. This summer our Parish Council has been very busy. By the end of August the new Children’s Play Area by the Church Rooms should be nearly completed (thanks to the fund raising efforts of the community and some hugely generous donations) and CCTV installed to keep a quiet eye on it; the Lower Glebe will have been triple mown as the first step in its journey and the ragwort, the scourge of 2020, will have been treated. The newly re-laid grass by the Kilndown Quarry Pond thrives and the pondweed has been cleared (four times). Dog fouling bag dispensers will be provided to help the forgetful in Kilndown and Goudhurst, and a Duck House will be installed on the Goudhurst pond, for the enjoyment of the children and pleasure for all. Your Parish Councillors … David Boniface, Craig Broom, Chris Ditton, Alan Foster, Antony Harris (Chairman), Phil Kirkby, David Knight, Barry Noakes, Caroline Richards, Jayne Russell, Guy Sutton and Peter Wood. Clerk to the Council. Anthony Farnfield, 01580 212552 and clerk@goudhurst-PC.gov.uk. 13

NEW VICAR We are getting there (at a gentle pace). Just in case you have not seen the information sheet on the gkchurch weekly information email it is included below. We are delighted that, following two days of interview process, the Patron has offered the post of Vicar of Goudhurst with Kilndown (subject to various legal requirements) and that offer has been accepted. Subject to the candidate meeting Bishop Rose in late August and being approved by the Queen, we will be able to welcome a new vicar. We don’t have any further details yet on potential start date and cannot share more information on the candidate, but we can tell you that the Panel was totally unanimous in their view. We are so grateful for the prayers that have carried this process to where it is today. We are tremendously excited about our future. Please continue to pray! One challenge to the candidates was to record a talk on Ecclesiates 3:1-8 - a text covered in our daily Bible studies earlier this summer. Do take a moment to reflect on what that poetry might be saying to you today, and what purpose and hope it might hold. We are grateful to all the applicants, shortlisted candidates and everyone who helped in many ways to get us to this point - for your prayerful partnership in the selection process. These last few months have been extraordinary for all sorts of reasons and we should never forget how extraordinary our God is. It was so severe, she was considering surgery. She explains: “I knew it would be a few months before I saw a consultant, but honestly, I really wasn’t comfortable with the idea of spinal injections or surgery; I’d read about the risks and recovery periods and it was a big worry for me. I’d seen some local magazine articles about patients who had recovered well at Wealden Osteopaths & Spine Centre. The Clinic Director James Pickering arranged for me to have an MRI scan straight away; he suspected I had some disc damage - a possible reason for my relentless sciatica. James was confident that IDD Therapy could help me; he reassured me that it would treat the root of my problem so that my sciatica wouldn’t return. I still can’t quite believe I’m back swimming, going to the gym and sleeping S After IDD Therapy, Sarah enjoyed through the night at last. IDD Therapy has been a godsend, and James’s a pain-free holiday in Jersey team has been wonderful throughout.” Call now on 01580 212833 or email enquiries@wealdenosteopaths.co.uk for a FREE 15 min phone consultation with one of our friendly expert team. ✓ Approved IDD Therapy Disc Clinic ✓ Peaceful location in Ranters Lane ✓ Flexible appointment times ✓ Ample FREE parking wealdenosteopaths.co.uk K
