Trinity School Senior Voice Friday 21st September 2018 The Headmaster’s Message The theme for the first fortnight of this term has been ‘Confidence’, which also links into our school vision. It was whilst preparing for leading a Prep assembly that I thought a bit deeper about what confidence might mean to people. The immediate and most obvious view of confidence is by it being demonstrated by those that can stand up and perform in front of their peers or perform well in the sports arena. However, as a school we work hard to instil confidence in all our pupils in a much more subtle way. Confidence to make a mistake, confidence to stand out from the crowd, confidence to try something new and confidence to make a difference to those around us. This does not happen with one lesson or one experience but gradually builds over time and years. When our Sixth Formers leave the school they have many great qualities which will future proof them for the world of work. This in turn gives them confidence but they also know the difference between confidence and arrogance – they have no need to make themselves feel better by putting others down. As ever, we have had some fantastic success and experiences at the start of this term which are on the following pages. Have a great weekend and hope you can avoid the storm! Keep up to date with the latest news: Trinity School, Teignmouth @TrinitySeniorSc and @PrepHeadTrinity

E-Safety - Fortnite The internet is a great way of communicating and it can greatly enhance learning but our children are at a vulnerable age, more trusting than adults and are not equipped to deal with issues or their consequences. The threats are ongoing and constantly changing, The solution is to educate and communicate with your children and make them aware of the potential risks. The latest craze is Fortnite. Many of our students play the game, often for hours and it can become addictive. In many cases opinion is mixed, the violence is “not bad compared with other games”, “ it is free!”, are often reasons for justification of the game, not about the potential risks. Many parents do not understand the Game or are phased by the technology. Gaming addiction is real and is heavily linked with mental wellbeing. Please read the following guide at bit.ly/2xFcmo7.
Senior Voice Brilliant Boarders Induction at River Dart Country Park The first Sunday back at Trinity saw our annual boarders’ induction which gives our old and new boarders from ten different countries the opportunity to get to know each other. All of our boarders embraced the challenges set at River Dart Country Park with enthusiasm and curiosity. These included a high ropes course, zip wire, raft building and crate stacking. The teamwork on show was incredible and it was a truly brilliant way to make new friends and establish bonds. Everyone had an amazing time and the day was filled with lots of laughter, good learning curves and overcoming personal challenges. Dinner with the Chef Earlier this week Mark Smith, Executive Chef, took the chance to sit down for dinner with the boarding pupils. It was an opportunity for the students to feedback on their likes and dislikes and to discuss the food with the people that prepare it. The feedback was good, the students enjoy the food and there are a few dishes they would like to see added to the menu so the catering team are going to slot those into the menus over the coming weeks as specials. It was a great opportunity for both sides of the counter to meet informally and for the students to put their opinions across.
Trinity School Key Stage 4 Assault Course Challenge The traditional Assault Course Challenge for the Year 10 and 11 pupils took place on the Friday afternoon of their first week back. Competition was particularly fierce this year with tutors all coaching and cajoling their tutees through the mud and over the obstacles! In the end, only 16 seconds separated 4 of the 5 teams. 2018 will be remembered for two reasons – firstly the unique situation of a tie, with 10JV and 11SC both completing the course as champions in 4 mins and 41 seconds! And secondly, for an individual record for an Under 18 of 2 mins and 52 seconds, set by Jai Mathieson. Congratulations to all involved! We also went kayaking and travelled to Cowes on the IoW on a CCF twin engine power boat, and did the Damage Repair Instructional Unit, DRIU and HMS EXCELLENT Fire Fighting School on Whale Island. Trinity School Library Corner The Senior Library is on the Red Corridor and is run by Karen & Paula, and according to the students it is the “Coolest Place in School” It is a great place to hang out at lunchtime and just chill, play a board game or help in the completion of the current jigsaw – an ideal stress reliever for both staff and students. In the Library we also have a Book Swap Trolley which was started in line with World Book Day and has been continued. It is simple, just bring a book, any book, leave it on the trolley and take one from the Trolley. In each edition of the Senior Voice we will try and tempt you, let you know of our new arrivals, make some recommendations or include a book review. Basically the Library is a vibrant place to find all your book, DVD and CD requirements.
