WHY DO WE CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH? Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. It is also of- ten observed for celebrating African American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865. The day was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth's commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas, which was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery. President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, had freed the enslaved people in Texas and all the other Southern secessionist states of the Con- federacy except for parts of states not in rebellion. Although the Emancipation Proclamation declared an end to slavery in the Confederate States, it did not end slavery in states that re- mained in the Union. For a short while after the fall of the Confederacy, slavery remained legal in two of the Union border states – Delaware and Kentucky. Those enslaved people were freed with the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished chattel slavery nationwide on December 6, 1865. The last enslaved people present in the continental United States were freed when the enslaved people held in the Indian Territories that had sided with the Confed- eracy were released, namely the Choctaw, in 1866. Celebrations date to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. They spread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering on a food festival. Participants in the Great Migration out of the South carried their celebrations to other parts of the country. It grew in popularity in the 1970s with a focus on African American freedom and African American arts. Beginning with Texas by proclamation in 1938, and by legislation in 1979, 49 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have formally recognized the holiday in various ways. Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. Why is it important? Juneteenth marks a date of major significance in American history and shows us that freedom and racial equality have always been a hard-fought battle for black Ameri- cans – a battle that continues to this day. It is a reminder that "nobody is free until everybody is free." It should be celebrated as the day when all Americans were liberated and created equal. It should be a day to reflect, to learn, and to grow as a nation and as a people. 3

Medicare News FIND AND COMPARE DOCTORS NEAR YOU Are you looking for a new doctor and not sure where to start? Medicare.gov makes it quick and easy to find and compare doctors and other providers in your area. Here's how: 1. Visit Medicare.gov, enter your location and select "Doctors & clinicians" under Find Care Providers. You can also search by specialty, like general practice or internal medicine. 2. Review details about the doctors you're interested in, like their contact informa- tion, practice locations, hospital affiliation, and performance information. 3. You can also select the "compare" button to compare up to 3 different healthcare providers you're interested in. Once you're ready to schedule a visit with a new doctor, be sure to call ahead to verify general information, like office location, if they're accepting new patients with Medi- care, and if you need a referral. Keep a list of all your favorite providers. Then, select the heart icon next to any of the providers to add them to your list of favorites. If you’re not already logged into your Medicare account, a window will pop up for you to log into (or create) your secure Medicare account. Once you’re logged in, the provider will either automatically add to your favorites, or, if you’re adding a favorite doctor or clinician, you can select the box to make this provider your primary clinician, select the location you use, and then add to Favorites. But what do these four nuggets of so-called medical wisdom have in common? They're all myths, half- truths, and misconceptions—pieces of information so familiar we take them for granted with- out truly considering the scientific truth behind them. In today's information age, when supposedly accurate medical advice and diagnoses can be found online with the click of a computer mouse, medi- cal myths are all around us. But much of this information isn't true, and using it to make decisions about your own health—whether it's how to treat the symptoms of the common cold or how to care for a child or aging relative—can be harmful. Even deadly. This is the focus of the Health and Wellness Monday lecture series begin- ning at 10:00 on June 6, 2022 in the Merrimac room. WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARNESS DAY: PEACE CONFERENCE Each year millions of older adults around the world suffer from some form of abuse. Instead of living their lives in peace, these adults are forced to deal with physical abuse, mental abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, or financial abuse. Others suffer from neglect, which can sometimes include self-neglect. As World Elder Abuse Aware- ness Day (WEAAD) 2022 approaches, Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARCOG) is sponsoring its first PEACE: Preventing Elder Abuse and Criminal Exploitation Conference. The conference takes its name from the former PEACE Coalition, a multi-disciplinary organization that worked for many years to address issues relating to the abuse and exploitation of senior and disabled adults. Every June, for over ten years, the PEACE coalition organized a WEAAD event designed to bring awareness to these issues and to identify resources available to victims of abuse and exploitation. Although the PEACE coalition is no longer active, TARCOG is pleased to continue this event after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The PEACE conference be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2022. This event will feature presentations from the Alabama Securities Commission, the Better Business Bureau, and other agencies. Special attention will be devoted to the financial exploitation targeting older adults and opioid misuse among the senior population. The conference will conclude with a panel discussion devoted to exploring com- munity resources available to victims of abuse and their advocates. Lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend this event. Those wishing to attend may register through Eventbrite begin- ning the first week in June. Additional information about the conference, including the location and time, will be available during registration. Those wishing to register by phone or those who would like additional information about this event can contact LaTanya D. Rhines, Elder Law Attorney at TARCOG by calling 256-830-0818. 12

Nutrition and Meals on Wheels Jeanie Glynn 256-382-0920 SUMMER WISH LIST from MEALS ON WHEELS 1. SUMMER SUBSTITUTES – If you are sometimes available at lunchtime on weekdays, please consider being a substitute driver for Meals on Wheels. We need substitutes to deliver meals when our regular volunteers cannot serve on their scheduled day. Since so many people go on vacation in the summertime, the need is most critical June through August. Without volunteers, we cannot get the meals to the elderly clients who so desperately need them! 2. YEAR-ROUND SUBSTITUTES – Since Meals on Wheels needs approxi- mately 500 volunteers per month, we also need substitute drivers year-round. 3. YEAR-ROUND VOLUNTEERS - All meals are delivered by volun- teers, year-round. Approximately 250 meals are delivered each day, on 22 routes throughout Huntsville. We ask our volunteers to commit to delivering once a month, for about 1.5 hours, at lunchtime. We provide meals packed and ready for pick up, and directions to each residence. 4. DONATIONS – We receive meals for our clients through Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments, but we rely on our local community for dollars to run our program. We are grateful for donations in any amount, from individuals, churches, businesses, and civic organizations. 5. DESERVING SENIORS – Our goal is to serve every deserving senior in Huntsville.
