LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES!! Come Away - PG-13 September 14, 2021 Two showings: at 9:00 am and 12:15 pm in the Merrimac Room. At this time, no refreshments will be served. In this imaginative origin story of two of the most beloved characters in literature – Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland - eight-year-old Alice, her mischievous brother Peter, and their brilliant older sibling David let their imaginations run wild one blissful summer in the English countryside. En- couraged by their parents, the kids' make-believe tea parties, sword fights and pirate ship adventures come to an abrupt end when tragedy strikes. Peter, eager to prove himself a hero to his grief-stricken and financially-struggling parents, journeys with Alice to London, where they try to sell a treasured heirloom to the sinister pawnshop owner. Return- ing home, Alice seeks temporary refuge in a won- drous rabbit hole while Peter permanently escapes reality by entering a magical realm as leader of the "Lost Boys." Starring Angelina Jolie, Derek Jacobi, David Oyelowo, and Michael Caine. Health and Wellness Teresa Crandall, RN 256-513-8295 Tips and Techniques for Managing Pain What can we do to help manage pain? Prescription medication op- tions can be effective, but they also carry risks and the potential for side effects. Before we look to steroids, opiates, nerve blocks and other medicines and procedures, what can we do to help reduce and manage pain issues at home? Here are a few suggestions. Be aware that pain can increase blood glucose levels, so starting pain management can result in low blood glucose, or hypoglycemia. Work with your healthcare team to have a plan in place. • Avoid injury. Maintain a healthy weight, since carrying extra weight increases the risk of joint and back injury and pain. Also start a stretching routine. Maintain- ing flexibility reduces strain on joints and nerve pressure, so stretch daily. Be sure to stretch both before and after exercise to avoid muscle and joint injuries. • Consider warm and cold therapy. Talk to your doctor about the use of these to relieve pain, particularly muscle pain. These therapies can reduce inflammation, improve circulation, reduce swelling and increase comfort. • Try physical therapy. Physical therapy can help you increase range of motion and flexibility. Your therapist can give you exercises to strengthen muscles and reduce the burden on painful joints. They can even help you find patterns of misuse that have been leading to your pain. • Get moving to stay moving. It may hurt to get moving at first, but the more we move, the less it will hurt. As we move, circulation increases, helping muscles to receive oxygen and nutrients and heal better, reducing fluid in joints that causes painful stiffness, and allowing muscles to strengthen and stabilize injured areas. Work with your doctor on a plan to manage the initial pain. Remember stretching is a great place to start! Research Study at UAH by Dr. Lenora Smith At the College of Nursing at UAH, a research study is being conducted in which the investigators are trying to show a relationship between changes in memory and the use of a mobile app that includes both physical exercise and brain training games. The physical exercises are exercises that are done while seated in a chair and were chosen because they increase heart rate. In this study, participants wear watches that monitor their heart rate while playing the app on a tablet; this is to see if the exercises are increasing heart rate enough to get oxygen flowing to the brain to im- prove cognition. Participants are screened prior to the study to make sure they have no blood pressure or heart issues that would prevent them from doing the exercises. The exercises and brain training games take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete and at the end of play, the investigators ask a few questions about how participants felt about the app, to obtain their opinions and/or suggestions about the app. This work is being completed under the supervision of a nurse faculty member, Dr. Lenora Smith and has been funded by the American Nurses Foundation. The study must be completed by June of 2022 or the grant is lost, so we are asking for anyone over the age of 65 who might be interested in this study to contact Dr. Smith at lenora. smith@uah.edu or 256-824-2425 and leave your contact information. This is not a solicitation for recruitment of participants; this is only to obtain any interest in the study to determine if the Senior Center is a good study location. 9

Changing the way Alabama ages, one family, at a time. Care that puts YOU first, for almost two decades • Home Care • Care Management • Crisis Intervention • Therapeutic Transitions LetsTalkASAP.com | (256) 382-0426 2212 Jordan Lane SW | Suite 222 Scan Here Huntsville, AL 35805 Medicare Open Enrollment is Just around the Corner Last year, the TARCOG State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) provided over 2400 seniors education and information regarding their Medicare benefits. This year from October 15 to December 7, Medicare beneficiaries have an opportunity, once again to review their Medicare Part D prescrip- tion drug plan or Medicare Advantage Plan and make changes if necessary. For 2022, there are over 32 Part D plans and 23 Medicare Advantage plans. We anticipate changes will include higher premiums, higher deductibles, and new formularies for the drug plans. There is help understanding your options available through TARCOG'S State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). SHIP is a free health benefits counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their families or caregivers. SHIP is an independent program funded by Federal agencies and is not affiliated with the insurance industry and is the only confidential, one-on-one Medicare beneficiary counseling service in Alabama. The SHIP Program can help you understand your Medicare benefits. Alabama SHIP provides education and information concerning: • Medicare (Parts A and B) • Medicare Advantage Plans • Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Medicare Part D) • Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) The SHIP couselors can provide a comparison of the Medicare Advantage plans that are avail- able in our area and do a comparison of drug plans that are specific for each individual and in many instances savings will result. Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to contact the SHIP department at 256-830-0818 for assistance. Checking your plan could save you money in 2022; but remember, you only have until De- cember 2021 to make any changes. 20
Nutrition and Meals on Wheels Jeanie Glynn 256-382-0920 meals on wheels a program of the MEALS ON WHEELS Huntsville-Madison County Senior Center Meals on Wheels is a service designed to provide nutritious meals for qualifying seniors, Monday through Friday at lunchtime. Our program is located within the Huntsville- Madison County Senior Center and serves clients within the Huntsville city limits. We depend solely on volunteers to deliver the meals. To receive meals, one must be age 60 or over, unable to cook for oneself due to a health problem, and have no one living with them to cook for them and no caregiver cooking for them. The recipient must be primarily homebound and living in Huntsville. There is no income qualification. We ask our volunteers to deliver for us once a month, at lunchtime. We provide food packed and ready to go, as well as directions to each location. Delivery takes 1 to 1 ½ hours. Volunteers pro- vide their own transportation and a smile! We also depend on kitchen volunteers, who help us once a week between 8am and 11am. No cooking is required, as food is delivered to us in bulk each morning by our supplier. We rely heavily on fundraisers and donations to fi- nance this program. Donations come from churches, individuals, civic organizations, and companies. While TARCOG provides the meals, we must raise money to cover building costs, staff costs, and supplies. Any amount is appreciated! If you would like to learn more about receiving meals, volunteering, or donating, please call us at 256-382- 0920, or email us at mow.cmgr@seniorview.com. NEW MEALS ON WHEELS CASE MANAGER! We now have a bi-lingual Case Manager (Spanish/English), Mrs. Debbie Bones. Debbie was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She graduated from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico in 2010 with a Bachelor of Natural Science Concentration on Biology. Deb- bie moved to the US with her husband Hector, an Army Veteran, and their 2 daughters in 2013. They have lived in the Huntsville/Madison area for the past 5 years, where they welcomed their son. Debbie has 5+ years of customer service experience and has a passion for helping others. In addition to her qualifications and experience, she is fluent in English and Spanish. We encourage you to call her if you need information about our services. Her number is 256-513-8321. Huntsville-Madison County Senior Center programs and services are funded in part by a grant from Alabama's Department of Senior Services through TARCOG's Agency on Aging. 21
