Welcome to Worship - June 8, 2014 “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Welcome, in the name of the One who created this day for our enjoyment! Pentecost: Since the Holy Spirit conveyed power and authority to the apostles, transforming them from twelve frightened followers into a band of bold evangelists, Pentecost is known as the birthday of the Church. The details are set down in the Act of the Apostles, 2:1-6. [Which we hear read for us today.] So empowered were the apostles that they are said to have almost immediately baptized 3,000 people. As it happens, the Holy Spirit visited the apostles on the Jewish feast of Pentecost, a long- established festival of thanksgiving for the first fruits of the wheat harvest. The Church’s transformation of this Jewish feast into a Christian festival was, in a way, related to the belief that the gift of the Holy Spirit to the apostles was the first fruits of a new harvesting - of souls. Summer Worship Schedule begins today: Today, through Labor Day weekend, summer worship times are 7:30, 8:30 and 10:15 a.m. Congratulations Class of 2014! Today we recognize our high school seniors at St. Matthew’s. This class has been enthusiastically involved in so many aspects of ministry at St. Matthew’s – mission trips, VBS, Sunday School, drama, and choirs – that we will have many opportunities to miss them next fall. They are a committed, spirited, and kind-hearted group, who have been giving members of our St. Matthew’s family. We wish them the best of luck and Godspeed in the new opportunities that await them! Read about the Seniors in the yellow bulletin insert available from an Usher or at the Welcome Center or across from the church office. This is a particularly large and active class and you’ll find it interesting to read about their experiences and future plans. You can also find this on our website as a part of the weekly bulletin announcements. Where are the bulletin announcements? The bulletin announcements are available as a separate set of pages and are available at the Welcome Center or near the ushers. To make good use of our resources, consider reading the announcements on our website - www.stmattslutheran.org - or email the church office to be added to the list of people receiving the announcements in advance, on Fridays. Today We Recognize the Graduating Senior Class of 2014 Michelle Brown, daughter of Bill and Beth Brown graduates from Wauwatosa East High School. As captain of the girls’ tennis team and as co-editor-in-chief of the Cardinal News, East’s newspaper, Michelle has learned how to lead others while pursuing athletics and academics. Her involvement in the music program at Wauwatosa East as an oboe player has led her to discover her passion for music. This passion, paired with her love for working with children, has resulted in her desire to pursue a degree in music education at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She is thankful for the opportunity to participate in the mission trips, VBS, bell choirs and Sunday school, both as a teacher and student, and is extremely grateful for all of the support and love she has felt over the past years. Anneke Clement, daughter of Jim and Karie Clement, graduates from Germantown High School, where she was involved with track and band. She has gone on the past three mission trips and will be going on the trip to Washington D.C. later this month. This fall, Anneke will be attending UW Oshkosh to pursue a degree in nursing. Madeline Cox, daughter of Dale and Robin Cox, graduates from Wauwatosa East High School where she was a member of National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She has been active in the music programs both at her school and at St. Matthew’s. She played violin for orchestra and piano for the jazz band at her school, and was a member of both Righteous Ringers and New Generation Choir at church. She has been a VBS volunteer for many years and is eager to attend her second mission trip this summer. This year she earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certification and has been a volunteer at Children’s Hospital. Next year, Madeline will be attending Concordia University Wisconsin as a nursing major in order to become a pediatric nurse. She would like to thank St. Matthew’s for the guidance, support, and wonderful friendships that have helped her grow to become a better person. Jared Ernst, son of Peter and Sue Ernst, graduates with honors from Brookfield Central High School. He has been actively involved in both sports and clubs throughout his high school career. Jared held a position on the Key Club Executive Board and was a member of SADD and Peer Helpers. His passion for soccer led him to play both varsity soccer and club soccer for the Bavarians. In the fall of 2014, Jared will be attending the University of Wisconsin - Madison pursuing a degree in business.
2 Brent Gastrau, son of Steve and Karen Gastrau, graduates from Wauwatosa East High School. During his high school years he was a member of the wrestling team and earned a varsity letter during freshman year, played varsity football senior year, and played on the golf team all 4 years. Brent has also played bass guitar for the past 6 years. He earned superior ratings from the Wisconsin Music Federation for his bass guitar performances for the past 3 years. This year Brent formed a rock band with some of his classmates; they’ve played at fundraisers for Amnesty International, the Wauwatosa Youth Commission and the Best Buddies Art and Crafts sale. One of Brent's most rewarding experiences during high school was participating in two mission trips to New Orleans with the St. Matthew's Youth to rebuild houses for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Brent would like to thank Mrs. Rutkowski and Mr. Hughes for mentoring him during confirmation. He will be attending University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall and majoring in business. Natalie Hanson, daughter of Tom and Kristin Hanson, graduates from Brookfield East High School. Help Support The Zeuskes with your donations Our congregation reaches out in care and concern to a family in a difficult time We have the opportunity to show love and support to one of our faithful St. Matthew’s families. Dan and Karen Zeuske joined St. Matthew’s while they were living in Wauwatosa, and expecting their first son, Ben. Another son, Nick, was born, and both were baptized at St. Matthew’s. In 2006 their youngest son Joseph was born and was soon diagnosed with prune belly syndrome and Dandy Walker Syndrome. The combination of conditions prevents Joseph from walking or talking. Joseph can eat some foods, but most of his nutrition must be administered through a feeding tube. Only his mom, dad, or a nurse can safely look after him. At the end of 2012 the family received more devastating news. Dan was diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer, which has spread to his bones, lungs, lymph nodes, and bladder. He has endured debilitating chemotherapy and a great deal of pain but remains committed to doing all that he can for his family. Dan continues to work three hours a day at his office and the rest of the day at home. As Dan’s endurance has suffered, Karen’s care-taking responsibilities have increased. Joseph now needs a Hoyer lift to assist in his daily care, but the Zeuskes’ current duplex is too small to accommodate the lift in their bathroom. As you can imagine, the medical costs are staggering, causing the family to fall behind on their bills and making it financially prohibitive to move to a larger space that would accommodate Joseph’s needs. The Zeuskes have remained active members of the St. Matthew’s family. St. Matthew’s members now have an excellent opportunity to embrace and nurture the Zeuskes. A fundraiser for their benefit will be held on June 1st, in conjunction with our Celebration Sunday. Activities will include a bake sale and raffle. Because the need is greater than these activities will likely produce, we St. Matthew’s Church community are asking you directly for your support. Checks can helps family in need be made out to St. Matthew’s and will be combined into one check for the Zeuskes. The Zeuske family is most grateful for all the prayers and concern offered on their behalf. We thank you for your prayerful consideration of this opportunity to be loving disciples of Jesus. Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” – Gospel of John 13:34-35
