Second Sunday in Ordinary Time • January 15, 2023 • Tri-Parish Bulletin “John testified further, saying, "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God." Jn 1:32-34 whose blood will take away the sins of the world. In John’s gospel, (ch. 19), Jesus is crucified at the same time the Passover lambs are being slaughtered in the Temple. Isaac says to his father, reference which John the Baptist (a Jew) is making to his “Here are the fire and the wood for the sacrifice, but where (Jewish) audience when he announces that the man is the lamb?” And Abraham answers, “God will provide walking towards him is the “Lamb of God, who takes away the lamb.” Jesus is the Lamb for the sacrifice. the sins of the world.” It’s the littleness of it that gets you. It’s the lamb, not the The Jews to whom this statement was addressed would lion. It’s the baby in the manger, not the vicious King have hearkened back to that iconic springtime lamb, the Herod. It’s the heavenly host of angels, not the legions of spotless one, none of whose bones had been broken, whose armies on the march. It’s perhaps the elderly couple blood was sprinkled on the doorposts of the houses of the praying their rosary in church every morning whose Hebrews on that first Passover night (Ex. 12:1-28). The prayers are keeping the world from calamity. Angel of Death would “pass over” the homes that were sprinkled with that blood. Behold the Lamb. John the Baptist, then, announces that Jesus is the Lamb Kathy McGovern © The Story and You 2023 The Northwest Colorado Tri-Parish Staff Welcomes You •Pastor- Fr.
