New in 2015 New innovations for the Audi R8 LMS Cup 2015 add drama, tension and intrigue to the already high-octane championship. Chief among the additions for the Cup’s fourth season is the new Superpole qualifying format where the top eight drivers compete in an individual time trial following the first qualifying session. The result is a tension-filled session which showcases the speed, talents and smarts of the Audi R8 LMS Cup drivers. This season, the Audi R8 LMS Cup also incorporates standing starts. The race weekend will see a rolling start for the first race and a standing start for the second, adding further thrills as the field roars off the grid. To assist drivers with the standing starts, the Audi R8 LMS Cup car features new launch control technology. The upgrade is among several new additions for the 2015 season which also include: a lighter clutch for a more agile response; a recessed rear wing for greater aerodynamic downforce; and a modified brake system for optimized braking force distribution. The introduction of Race Success Ballast in 2014 added another dimension to the Cup, and in 2015, the race winner receives 50 kg of weight for the following race, the 2nd place finisher, 35 kg and the 3rd place finisher, 20 kg. Creating an even more equitable playing field is the addition of Season Guide 2015 driver weight equalization, where weight is added to the car to bring each driver, in full race gear, to a minimum of 80 kg. 9

Audi Motorsport Sportiness, ground-breaking technology and emotional design are the main components of the brand’s success with both series production models and on race tracks around the world. In 2014, Audi celebrated victory number thirteen at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The third consecutive win for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro hybrid race car again underlined the guiding principle of the brand’s motorsport activities: “Vorsprung durch Technik”. In 2014, the Audi R8 LMS ultra GT3 race car also claimed victories on both the famous “Green Hell” at the Nürburgring 24 Hours and at the iconic Spa 24 Hours. Today’s success builds upon a long legacy, as racing has always been in the genes of the Audi brand. Rallying In the early 1980s, Audi turned rallying on its head with the quattro four-wheel drive technology. The brand won several World Rally Championships and the Audi Sport quattro S1 stormed the Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA, in record time for three successive years from 1985 to 1987. Audi also made the quattro drive ‘fashionable’ on the race track, initially with the Audi 200 quattro and Audi 90 quattro IMSA-GTO in the USA. The success continued with the Audi V8 quattro winning the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) in 1990 and 1991, followed by a range of European titles for the Audi A4 quattro. Early success The motorsport history of Audi began more than 100 years ago with the Audi Type C – the “Alpine conquerer” – winning the Austrian Alpine Run between 1911 and 1914. In the Season Guide 2015 1930s, Audi achieved further success with the iconic Auto Union Grand Prix car, the “Silver Arrow”, which clinched titles around the world with legendary drivers including Bernd Rosemeyer. The “Silver Arrow” also broke speed records, reaching 320 km/h on an Italian autostrada in 1935. 33
Audi Motorsport Prototype racing After the superior quattro drive was banned from touring car racing, Audi moved into sport prototypes. In 1999, Audi secured a podium finish on its debut in the world’s toughest and most significant endurance competition, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, before scoring a historic hat trick between 2000 and 2002 with the Audi R8. The car’s TFSI engine technology was later incorporated into series production. The Audi R8 secured its place in motorsport history with a total of 64 overall victories in more than 80 sports car races. In 2006, the newly developed Audi R10 TDI (Turbo Diesel Injection) became the first ever diesel powered car to triumph at Le Mans. In 2012, the Audi R18 e-tron was the first hybrid car to win the celebrated race. The 2014 victory of drivers Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer marked the third triumph in a row for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro and overall victory number thirteen for Audi at Le Mans. Audi also won the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles in the new FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in both 2012 and 2013. 34
Audi Motorsport Strong record in DTM Audi returned to the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) in 2004 with its factory team and immediately clinched the title with Mattias Ekström. The Swede also triumphed in 2007, and Timo Scheider followed suit in 2008 and 2009, making Audi the first manufacturer in DTM history to score a hat trick of titles. In 2011, Martin Tomczyk rounded off the Audi A4 DTM success story with victory number five for the car. Audi gained a further title in the 2013 season, with German driver Mike Rockenfeller winning the drivers’ title in his Audi RS 5 DTM. Audi Sport customer racing Audi entered customer racing in 2009 with the Audi R8 LMS, the first Audi race car to be specifically developed for use in customer sport. The race car shares more than 50 percent of its technical platform with the production model Audi R8 from Neckarsulm. The race version impressed from the start. The Audi R8 LMS and the Audi R8 LMS ultra (introduced in 2013) have achieved over 200 international victories, including wins at Bathurst, Nürburgring and Spa. Audi driver Edoardo Mortara won the Macau GT Cup with the race version of the Audi R8 for three consecutive years between 2011 and 2013. In 2014, the Season Guide 2015 Audi R8 LMS ultra secured a spectacular double with titles at both of the leading GT 24 hour races at Nürburgring and Spa. 35
Motorsport Benefits Audi Customers Motorsport at Audi is always undertaken with consideration for our customer. Audi uses the race track as a test bed for new technologies. Race car development and series production benefit from each other in many areas, including hybrid drives, engine downsizing, fuel injection technology and turbocharger design. Light technology In 2014, for the first time, Audi drove at Le Mans with laser lights and a special edition Audi R8 LMX, a road model with laser lights, followed shortly. Lights are an important safety factor and are often tested in motorsport. The Audi R18 TDI, for example, was the first Le Mans sports car with full LED headlights. Ultra lightweight Ultra lightweight aluminum suspension components were tested by Audi in rallying in the 1980s, and have since played a significant role in the reduction of fuel consumption in road cars. For 20 years, the lightweight Audi Space Frame (ASF) has set manufacturing standards. The Audi R8 LMS racing car’s aluminum chassis and the road going Audi R8 originate from the same production. Carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) have also found their way from motorsport into series production. 36
