LINWOOD SENIOR CENTER “May you grow up to be righteous, may you grow up to be true. May you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong, May you stay ‘forever young’!” ~Bob Dylan~ Hi Linwood Friends, I appreciate the words above! And it is my heart’s desire to stay active and moving and “forever young” in my thinking anyway. I always want to learn more, I always want to keep seeking new horizons, and meeting new people. I think we can encourage each other to keep that mindset, we just have to set the pace and make a plan! This month, we will try to focus on the mind-body connections. We have a great 2 part program entitled “Covid – Navigating Fear, Loss & Emotions of the Past Year.” Our grief counselor/chaplain Greg Schmidt will be leading the program. And will have some excellent information to share about the challenges we have and are making it through. Take some time and destress by crafting, we have some things for you to take your mind off and just do some “easy concentrating”. We also are having a Mother’s Day Ice Tea, and starting our LUNCHING LOVELIES & ROMEO CLUB again, so look through the newsletter and start marking it up! NORTHEAST SENIOR CENTER Hello Everyone! Happy May! Guess what? We have decided since things are going so well with our centers that starting in May we will open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm. However, you will still need to RSVP for all activities, because we are still limited on the number of members in the building at one time. If you would like to RSVP for any activity please call (316) 269-4444. If no one answers please leave a message and I will call you when I am available to do so. Thank you! With that said, I want to share something with you…It is Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 (KJV) To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace. These scriptures say a lot…there is a time for everything, whether we acknowledge it or not. Once we realize this we can approach life differently. It took me some time to truly understand it…I hear many of you say from time to time “Just keep on living”…I hear you say it so much I finally got it. These scriptures also helped me get it as well. Last year was a bit much, as you have heard me say before. ORCHARD PARK SENIOR CENTER May is Older Americans Month so Happy Older Americans Month to each of you! Older Americans Month is celebrated each year in May and recognizes the contributions of older adults across the nation. This month is also to raise awareness of elder abuse and neglect. When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in Older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.” Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May, asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other types of activities. Their stories and contributions help to inspire others. This year we will celebrate older adults with special emphasis on the power of connection and engagement in building strong communities. While raising families and building careers, they also gave back to their communities in a variety of ways. In their lifetime, times have changed but they continue to volunteer and serve their communities and each one deserves recognition for their commitment. Now, more than ever before, they are taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence and advocating for themselves and others. They expect to continue to live their lives to the fullest and are insisting on changes that make that possible. There are many things we can all do to nurture ourselves, reinforce our strength and continue to thrive. Connecting with others is one of the most important – it plays a vital role in our health and well-being, and in our communities. What it means to age has changed, and Older American Month 2021 is a perfect opportunity to recognize and celebrate what getting older looks like today. So once again, Happy Older Americans Month! We thank you for the life lessons, hard work and dedication you provide to each of our communities. 19
