Purim 5782 WHAT ARE MISHLOACH MANOT? Mishloach Manot are gifts of food and treats that friends give to friends and neighbors during the Jewish holiday of Purim. WHY IS IT CUSTOMARY TO GIVE MISHLOACH MANOT? The mitzvah of giving Mishloach Manot is derived from the Book of Esther, which tells the Jewish people to observe the days of Purim as days of "feasting and gladness, and sending portions of food to one another, and gifts to the poor'' (Esther 9:22). This verse refers to three different mitzvot: eating a Purim meal, the sending of two different, ready-to-eat foods and/or drinks to one friend (known by the Hebrew term, mishloach manot), and the distribution of two charitable donations (either money or food) to two poor people. We can reinterpret the BACK TO THE FUTURE IN 2022 contributions to the Temple in Israel to contributions to religious organizations and schools. It is not uncommon for people to send money to Israel and help families afford education for their children. No Jewish holiday is celebrated COMMUNITY PURIM without thinking about those who have less. We try to bring a happy and merry holiday of Purim to everyone. Ultimately, the rich and poor, were CELEBRATION AT THE JCC saved from Haman’s (boo) evil actions. SUNDAY, MARCH 13 | 1-3 PM Help us fulfill this mitzvah and spread love and friendship on Purim! PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Join Us! RICHARD W. BRISKIN The Beth El Community is engaging in a strategic planning process that is being led by Leah Goldman, a member of our congregation and Bob Leventhal from USCJ. I feel so grateful to them for taking on this task and for the guidance they have been and will provide. CANTOR-IN-RESIDENCE WEEKEND I recently had the opportunity to speak with Leah about the process and want to share a summary of our conversation here: Matt: Leah what is the first Beth El experience that you can recall having? FRIDAY, APRIL 1 | 6 PM Leah: I remember being in kindergarten in Devorah Kolko‘s class. It is amazing that I still see her today and have Special Kabbalat Shabbat service led by Hazzan Matt Austerklein & Noah Rachels those excellent early memories with her. Matt: What would you say is the most meaningful event you participated in at Beth El? SHABBAT DINNER AT 7 PM (reservations required; www.tberochester.org) Leah: I would have to say that that is my wedding. Both my husband and I have a number of relatives who either grew up at Beth El or are currently members. Having the event at the synagogue was very meaningful for us. SATURDAY, APRIL 2 | 9:30 AM Hazzan Matt Austerklein & Noah Rachels will lead parts of the service on Shabbat and will lead Matt: What made you agree to take on the role of chairing the committee coordinating the strategic planning effort? Havdalah Saturday night Leah: I really feel that it is important to do this particular work. I was honored to be asked and I like being helpful and giving back some of what I have received from Beth El SUNDAY APRIL 3 | 2 PM Concert Featuring Noah Rachels with participation by Hazzan Matt Austerklein Matt: How do you define success with the strategic planing process? Leah: I would like to see the plan result in a vibrant community that is filled with meaningful connections to Jewish life and tradition. Matt: Has anything surprised you so far about the process? Leah: I have been surprised at how meaningful it has been to me to understand the many shared experiences we all have in the Beth El Community. Matt: Why is this process important? Leah: I think it is really important to be intentional about what we want to do next. We want a plan that has a purpose to meet the needs of those who care about the Synagogue Matt: How can people reading this be helpful to the strategic planning process? RECIPIENT OF BRISKIN AWARD VISITING HAZZAN Leah: Say yes when you were asked to provide input. Reach out and have your voice heard. BEDIKAT HAMETZ One of the required holiday ceremonies is Bedikat Hametz, searching for leaven. The night before the first seder, Thursday, April 14, we conduct a candle-lit search through our home to ensure that no hametz is still present. It is a INFORMATION brief ceremony in which the entire family can and should participate. 1. Make sure that all hametz has been removed or locked away with the exception of what will be needed for the morning. 2. Carefully hide some crumbs of bread. This is to insure that the blessing and the ceremony will not be performed in vain. EREV PESAH SIYUM 3. Take a candle, a feather or brush, and a box or cloth for the crumbs, and recite this blessing: The sunrise to sunset ta'anit (fast) bekhorim (of the firstborn), which occurs on the day before Passover, is the only Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheynu Melekh haolam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tsivanu al biur hametz. fast that applies to just a segment of the community: all males who are the firstborn children in their families (if the Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the Universe, who has sanctified us with the commandments and commanded firstborn child is female, the first son born after her is not obligated). us to remove all leaven. On Friday, April 15 at or before 10:00 am, burn the leaven. Passover has its own special rules of kashrut. On Pesah, Jews are forbidden from owning or consuming hametz (flour, food or drink made from the prohibited species of leavened grain: wheat, oats, barley, rye or spelt). Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following foods (kitniyot) to the above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes beans and peas; (however, string beans are permitted). The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible. Sephardic authorities permit the use of all of the above kitniyot. PERMITTED FOODS: A. The most important institution of Jewish life is the Jewish home. It is the center of Jewish education, inspiration and faith. Passover is uniquely a family festival when grandparents, parents, children, relatives and friends reenact ancient rituals. The whole text of the Haggadah is intended to build a pathway to a child’s heart.
