Don’t be late for a very important date!
Welcome to the Mad Hatter’s Ball, presented by Scotiabank. Enter the magic
of Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alice in Wonderland. Grin like the Cheshire Cat while
being astounded by the many “fairy tale” silent and live auction items awaiting
your generous bids. Keep in mind that Lewis Carroll was also a mathematician
and would be impressed by the total of the funds raised tonight which will
help purchase a new ultrasound machine.
Listen to music from the popular band, The Fade Kings. Back by popular
demand, your Master of Ceremonies for the evening is none other than “The
Mad Hatter” himself, Darcy Elder. Darcy’s attire and quick wit will keep you on
edge and guide you through the evening’s activities.
This evening’s British-themed dinner is most certainly delicious and will send
your taste buds soaring. It will be followed by a “Tick Tock” dessert and
accompanied by fine wines.
Thanks to the members of the gala committee who have worked many hours
to make this evening a success. We thank our sponsors, donors and partners
for their continued generous support of Trenton Memorial Hospital. We are
proud of our hospital and staff and the care they provide.

The Cause
When a physician is tasked with diagnosing a patient’s
symptoms, they may require an ultrasound to help them do
so. It uses sound waves to look at organs and structures inside
of the body. It can measure blood flow to detect blockages,
such as clots in the arteries and veins of the abdomen, arms,
legs, neck, brain or other body organs. It can also assess
organ damage following illness or evaluate symptoms of pain,
swelling or infection, or detect tumours or congenital vascular
malformations. An ultrasound allows doctors to see problems
with organs (such as the gall bladder, liver, kidneys, pancreas,
appendix, ovaries and bladder), vessels and tissues, without
needing to make an incision. Physicians may be able to diagnose
a variety of heart conditions, including valve problems and
congestive heart failure, as well as assess damage after a heart
attack. They can also monitor the growth of a fetus.
At Trenton Memorial Hospital, approximately 9,000 ultrasound
examinations are done annually. Ultrasounds are safe and easy
as there is no exposure to radiation to the patient, and they
are quick to administer. The cost of a new Ultrasound for the
Diagnostic Imaging Department is $183,000.
Your support is critically needed to fund this equipment, as the
government only helps with operating costs. Please consider this
when bidding.

WHAT DOES IT DO?
An ultrasound machine creates images of soft tissue structures
inside the body so they can be examined. It can also measure

Ultrasounds are good for internal organs,
where CT Scan is better for bony structures
Ultrasounds and MRI are similar, but
ultrasounds are faster, good for those
claustrophobic, and those who cannot
have dye contrast, and less expensive.
HOW OFTEN IS AN ULTRASOUND USED
AT TMH?
In 2018/19 there were nearly 9000
ultrasounds, which was an increase of 3%
from the previous year and 49% increase
since 2014/15.
