Overview – what is my child expected to achieve? For the KS2 tests a scaled score of 100 will always represent the ‘expected standard’ – equivalent to an old Level 4b The scaled score will be based upon the pupils’ raw score. • 80 is the lowest scaled score that can be awarded • 120 is the highest scaled score The raw score is their total number of marks they receive in the test. A conversion table will be used to translate raw scores into scaled scores.
Results Results will be published on Tuesday 7th July and shortly afterwards each pupil will receive: ◦ A raw score ◦ A scaled score ◦ Confirmation of whether or not they have reached the expected standard

Reading • The Reading Test consists of a single test paper with three unrelated reading texts. • Children are given 60 minutes in total, which includes reading the texts and answering the questions. • A total of 50 marks are available. • Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. • Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.
Assessment Foci
Short answers Some questions are followed by a short line or box. This shows that you need only write a word or phrase in your answer.
Several line answers Some questions are followed by a few lines. This gives you space to write more words or a sentence or two.
A longer, more detailed answer is needed to explain your opinion. You can write in full sentences if you want to.
Other answers For some questions, you do not need to write anything at all. You should tick, draw lines to, or put a ring around your answer. Read the instructions carefully so that you know how to answer the question.

Maths Three Papers: A raw score of approximately 60 is required to meet the National Standard. Children are not allowed to use a calculator for any of the tests and are encouraged to write down all their working.
Maths Paper 1 Arithmetic
Maths Papers 2 and 3 (Reasoning) •40 minutes each. •Worth a total of 35 marks each. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: • Multiple choice • True or false • Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart • Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem” Reference: https://www.theschoolrun.com/key-stage-2-SATs-2018

Ways to help at home – Spelling Post-its Spelling rules Point out spellings around the house / in shops / on outings When listening to your child read, point out certain spellings Use the Home Spelling Book. Note words and their spellings in the context of the sentences
Ways to help at home - Reading Read a range of non-fiction and fiction texts – identify the features of the texts. Listen to your child read – use the Home Reading Book. Ask questions about their reading. Find different types of texts in your home. Talk about WHO they are written for / WHY they have been written / WHAT style has been used / WHEN the text style is used / WHERE these texts are found / HOW the texts have been organised.
Ways to help at home - Writing Vary sentence structure • Begin sentences with different words • Use a variety of punctuation • Use a topic sentence to begin paragraphs • Encourage description and expand detail
Essentials Pupils MUST: Read and follow instructions very carefully Check that they understand exactly what is expected Know what they have to do to reach the ‘expected’ standard Remember to use their class targets Use the strategies taught in class (DIAL/PEE) Ask WHY

Maths – style of papers (past test papers) Pupils will sit a test in November and further test papers will be used as a mock SAT in March 2018. In lessons pupils are already using past questions from papers to practice the skills they are learning. Copies of past papers are available at: www.emaths.co.uk/index.php/4-students/past-papers/ks2-sat-papers www.satspapers.org/mathsKS2SATS.htm www.satstestsonline.co.uk/sto_past_papers.aspx
Ways to help at home - Maths One of the most important ways is to sit down and talk to your child: Discuss what they have been doing in each Maths lesson. Ask them to explain. Go through their homework tasks with them. If they can do the work independently then go through it with them afterwards, discussing how they did it and identify any mistakes. (Either explain the work to your child or ask them to see their teacher) Use the support materials Mathletics web-site, CGP Targeted Question Book and Key Stage 2 Study Book, Tool Kit and Past Papers etc. Encourage your child to go through these, explain things to them if they are unsure – or remind them to ask their teacher. Be careful with Calculation Methods – some pupils will be using informal methods – ask you child to explain the method they use. A hand out is included in the envelope showing the preferred methods.
Ways to help at home - Maths Many questions involve solving a problem and working in context. Ask questions about the world around them, involving: telling the time, differences in time, reading bus and train timetables, T.V schedules, cooking times, 12 and 24hr clock etc. measuring, estimating, checking – length, area, capacity/volume, mass/weight, temperature (positive/negative), angles etc. money, shopping bills, change, tickets etc. working out fractions and percentage of quantities
Ways to help at home - Maths Certain things children need to learn, for example Types of number: recognition of prime numbers, square numbers, factors and multiples Average: mode, median, mean, range, Conventions for co-ordinates Reading and plotting graphs Shape & Measurement: Properties of 2D shapes including triangles and quadrilaterals, sides on a pentagon and the nets of 3D shapes such as cube and cuboid, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, degrees in a line, types of angle. Perimeter, area and formulae Conversion between units Fractions, decimals and percentages and their conversion one to another.
Ways to help at home - Maths Develop strategies – drawing measurements on diagram, using tracing paper, annotating graphs, showing working, use of trial and improvements, applying inverse operations, following one step at a time in problems, reading questions carefully
Lessons and intervention The teachers are used to: Enabling pupils to explain their methods to solve problems. Using specific activities for pupils to develop and share their mathematical language, use and apply problem solving strategies and to build confidence in their ability to ‘explain the maths’. Sometimes, always, never activities True or False activities Say what you see What’s the same, what’s different? Watch what you do – can you see the pattern?
Success in Maths is all about confidence and enjoyment. Revision Tips - Maths Extra lessons/Intervention with Mrs King and Mr Watson are already being provided. In Spring term these will increase to after school study sessions with Mrs Watson, Mr Brooks, Miss Simpkins, Mr Hackett and Miss Woodman. Doc Watson’s maths surgery is also available. Attendees to Breakfast Club will have random ‘reasoning’ questions given so they can practice their skills. Maths in Motion (lunch time club on a Wednesday for revision) – practice solving ‘reasoning’ questions.
Revision Aids - Maths CGP Targeted Question Book. The Key Stage 2 Study Book Mathletics & TT Rockstars: Pupils have User names & passwords. Can be used at home/at school. Revision Tips - Maths When revising maths, don’t just look or read: you need to do it! Short periods of 10 – 15 minutes at a time are ideal. Use ‘Post it Notes’ for key words to help the memory. Ask your child to explain how / why to you – it helps their understanding. Remind your child they can not ‘fail’ a SAT paper, but it is their chance to show just how good they are at maths and how much progress they have made. Success in Maths is all about confidence and enjoyment.
