THURSDAY COURSE - AM and PM Session Presented by Dr. Uche Odiatu 50 Shades of Inflammation: The Mouth, Body, Mind Connection - AM Session Our patients don’t leave stressful jobs, poor sleeping patterns, lack of fitness or erratic eating habits in the car before they sit in our chair. There’s irrefutable scientific evidence that these habits have the ability to ramp up inflammation or dial it down. Well adjusted, physically active patients enjoy a physiology that supports a better response to our prevention/restorative interventions. Objectives: • Gain greater insight into the relationship between chronic inflammation & disease • Discover how eating habits affect inflammation and treatment outcomes Dr. Uche Odiatu • Identify the sleep deprived patient, not just apnea • Understand why sedentary patients don’t heal as well as active patients Note: 85% of your patients are sedentary • Develop a conversation style to positively impact your patient during new patient and recare exams Patient Nutrition Lollapalooza: French Fries, Gut, Flora & Fitness - PM Session Gut flora, your resident gut microbiome - the 100 trillion little friends that call your body home. New research shows our microbiome influences metabolism, oral health and, yes, even personality. This fast- paced session was designed to give you everything you need to know about the human gut microbiome. Objectives: • Gain insight into the science of the gut microbiome • Learn why new findings about gut flora are shaking the very foundation of health care and nutrition • Understand how your patients’ dental arch integrity and oral condition directly impacts their digestive health • Discover how probiotics might have a place in your chair-side conversations when prescribing antibiotics Dr. Uche Odiatu earned his DMD at the University of Manitoba Dental School and maintains a private dental practice in Toronto. His love of health and fitness started at age 13 when he began training with weights and ultimately led to international competition. Dr. Odiatu is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Strength & Conditioning Association and the Canadian Association of Fitness Professionals. He is a certified Nutrition & Wellness Specialist and provides wellness guidance for his dental patients. Dr. Odiatu has appeared on many radio and television shows, authored The Miracle of Health and lectures at dental conferences across North America.
THURSDAY COURSE - AM Session Only Presented by Dr. Brendan Cooney & Dr. Daniel Caban Navigating Dilemmas in Adolescent Dentistry Many adolescent patients are confronted with developing dental health issues which have lifelong implications. The decisions made in managing these problems in the growing patient can have long term functional, cosmetic and esthetic consequences for their adult dental health experience. Issues such as enamel hypo-mineralization, dental malformations, partial dental agenesis and unfavorable facial growth patterns are some of common problems and dilemmas encountered in adolescent patients from the perspective of both the pediatric dentist and the orthodontist. The importance of developing an integrated and collaborative solution to these problems with an eye towards the long-term implications for the patient will be emphasized. Dr. Brendan Cooney Representative cases demonstrating these concepts will be presented. Dr. Brendan Cooney received his DDS from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency and a fellowship in surgical correction of facial deformities at The New York Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Cooney received his certificate of specialty training in orthodontics from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and his MS degree in orthodontics from Georgetown University Graduate School. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics as well as a member of the ADA, the American Association of Orthodontists and the American College of Dentists. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and is in private practice as an orthodontic specialist in Troy and Dr. Daniel Caban Ballston Lake, NY. Dr. Daniel Caban received his DMD at Temple University and completed a GPR at Woodhull Hospital followed by a Pediatric Residency at Maimonides Medical Center. He is a member of the Cleft and Craniofacial Team at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Caban has obtained Board-Certification in Pediatric Dentistry and received Diplomate Status with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Caban is certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support and Oral Conscious Sedation. THURSDAY COURSE - PM Session Only Presented by Dr. Mary E. Burns Airway Assessment in Adolescents This presentation will include airway assessment through clinical exam, medical and dental histories and the use of CBCT data. In addition, CBCT assessment of the TMJ and skeletal structures will be demonstrated. A presentation of the spectrum of sleep disordered breathing and a review of the current medical and dental literature will enable participants to bring knowledge of this most critical information into their practice. Finally, Dr. Burns will present strategies to enhance the airway during growth and development and comprehensive dental care. Dr. Mary Burns Objectives: • Clinical assessment of the airway and examination for sleep disordered breathing (SDB) • CBCT assessment of the airway, TMJ and skeletal relationships • The spectrum of sleep disordered breathing – What is the dentist’s role? Dr. Mary E. Burns earned her DMD degree from University of Pittsburgh and her Certificate in Orthodontics and Masters of Education and Science from the Ohio State University. She received her certificate from the Roth Institute of TMJ, centered on orthodontic treatment, and serves on the faculty of the OBI Foundation for Bioesthetic Dentistry. An orthodontist for more than 27 years, Dr. Burns lectures internationally on the topics of Biologic Orthodontics and the role of the orthodontist in the treatment of patients with SDB. She also serves as a research mentor for orthodontic residents at West Virginia University, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, University of Pennsylvania, and Einstein Medical Center. FRIDAY COURSE - AM and PM Session Presented by Dr. Randy F. Huffines Clinical Pearls For Treating Older Patients According to ADA statistics, 30% of income in a general practice today comes from treating patients over 60. The number of these patients will double to over 79 million during the practice life of current dental graduates. These aging boomers look at dentistry differently than did their predecessors. They no longer consider tooth loss an inevitable consequence of aging and are willing to "put their money where their mouth is" if the dental team is trained to meet their unique needs. Providing quality dental care for these patients can be rewarding but also challenging, due to an array Dr. Randy F. Huffines of complex dental and medical conditions that become more common as we age. These include stroke, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimers, increased medication use, xerostomia, poor hemostasis, gingival overgrowth, and adverse drug interactions. Visual and/or hearing impairments can also lead to misunderstandings between the patient and the dental team. In this presentation, solutions to common problems are clearly explained. Catch the Age Wave and prepare your practice for a successful present and future! Dr. Randy Huffines received his DDS in 1983 from the University of Tennessee and is recognized as one of the country's leading experts on aging and oral health. He has treated older and medically complex adults in a traditional private practice, in hospitals and nursing homes. Dr. Huffines is one of only a handful of practicing clinicians in the United States who completed a two-year postdoctoral Fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry. He is a Past President and Fellow of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry, Fellow of the American Association of Hospital Dentists and Diplomate of the American Board Special Care Dentistry. In 2004, he was appointed to the American Dental Association's Elder Care Task Force.
FRIDAY COURSE - AM and PM Session Presented by Dr. Gwen Cohen Brown Common Oral Lesions: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment - AM Session With Dentistry’s focus changing from restorative procedures to disease prevention, providers will need to identify oral disease and prevent disease progression in healthy patients. Patients often present with sore irritated mucosa; but symptoms of peeling, redness and blisters can be attributed to many different etiologies. This course presents an approach to differential diagnosis and treatment of common oral lesions, especially those diseases that mimic each other. Clinical management of common oral lesions, treatment modalities and anticipated prognosis will be discussed. Objectives: Dr. Gwen Cohen-Brown • Recognize common soft tissue lesions that affect the oral and perioral tissues • Develop a differential diagnoses for common oral lesions by incorporating clinical presentation, histologic and lab findings • Describe current treatment modalities for various common oral lesions and prescribe pharmacological agents Oral Cancer, HPV, and Emerging Medical Technologies - PM Session This course will review the clinical and microscopic features of oral cancer and pre-malignant lesions with a focus on HPV associated oral cancers and oral pathologies. Emerging medical technologies used in the diagnosis of oral cancer as well as standard intraoral and extraoral protocols will be presented. The histologic criteria for dysplasia will be reviewed, as will leukoplakia and erythroplakia of the oral soft tissues. Carcinoma will be examined with respect to histologic subtype, histologic grade, tumor size, regional nodal involvement, and metastatic spread of disease. Objectives: • Assess a histologic slide of dysplasia and accurately determine severity with correlation to treatment and prognosis • Evaluate new concepts of field cancerization; skip areas in dysplasia, and multifocal presentation of disease • Determine appropriate lab tests including biopsy sites, cytologic smears and emerging medical technologies Dr. Gwen Cohen Brown is a Professor at the Department of Dental Hygiene at the New York City College of Technology and a Fellow in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillo-facial Pathology. She is on the faculty at the AIDS Institute and the NY/NJ AIDS Education and Training Center and provides continuing education on the topics of Infection Control, Oral Cancer and Emerging Medical Technologies, and Common Oral Lesions in NY and NJ. She represents and is sponsored by the NYSDOH, the NYSDOC, the AIDS Institute and the CDC.
