Expert Analysis By Brad Free BEST BET: That Corey (3rd race) First Race 1. Discretionary Day 2. Big Flint 3. Big Talker This Cal-bred maiden turf mile is a split of race 3, ~DISCRETIONARY DAY^ gets the call over unlucky debut runner-up ~BIG FLINT^. The recent third-place finish by 'DAY was solid considering the fractions were fast and the race was mostly dominated by closers. 'DAY chased from third, loomed three-wide into the lane to make the lead, then got swallowed. Good try by an improving colt, who can break his maiden fourth time out if he holds off BIG FLINT. The latter ran super in his debut in the same race. He broke awkwardly to be away last, trailed into the far turn, rallied wide into the lane, finished fast and missed by only a half-length while finishing in front of the top choice. With a clean break, he might run right past. ~BIG TALKER^ merely ran around the course both starts this summer at Del Mar, seventh and fifth. A sibling to G1 winner Mucho Unusual and G3 winner Big Score, 'TALKER has been off four months, and may have improved in the interim. CIRCLEOFCHAMPIONS dueled through a hot pace in his first route, and chucked it the final furlong. Perhaps he can ration his speed more efficiently with Lasix on, and blinkers off. Second Race 1. Plum Wild 2. Enriched by Deb 3. Vangogo ~PLUM WILD^ is back where she fits, in a low-level claiming sprint for fillies and mares, non-winners of two. Overmatched last out as a longshot in a Cal-bred allowance at Los Alamitos, the veteran moves from the inside to an outside post and should be able to wear them down if she handles dirt. That might be a challenge. Her first 17 starts were on synthetic and turf; she is unproven on dirt. ~ENRICHED BY DEB^ followed her maiden-claiming win two back with a creditable runner-up finish at this N2L claiming level two months ago. Freshened since, in light with a seven-pound apprentice, speed for a pressing trip, logical contender returning to the track on which she broke her maiden. ~VANGOGO^ wired maiden-20s last out at LRC, winning by open lengths. The time was not fast, but she is quick enough to make the lead and could get brave. Third Race 1. That Corey 2. Gordy's Boy 3. Hail Freedom This Cal-bred maiden turf mile is a split of race 1. With two sprints under his belt, ~THAT COREY^ is ready to stretch out and win. Though he lost twice as the favorite, the Square Eddie colt ran okay in both. He pressed the pace and tired in his fifth-place debut, then improved next out and finished second with a similar trip. His dam won at a mile and one eighth, so this mile trip should be fine. 'COREY figures to be forwardly placed on the stretch-out. ~GORDY'S BOY^ returns to his preferred footing, which is grass. He misfired on dirt last out, a distant third with a low number, but in his previous start on turf he finished only a length behind the top choice. Bred for two turns, he will keep the top choice honest up front. ~HAIL FREEDOM^ pressed a fast pace and tired in his main-track debut less than two weeks ago. His pedigree okays the longer distance and switch in surfaces. He might be the speed of the speed. Come catch him? BIG FRANK DA TALK broke slowly and finished nowhere in his dirt sprint debut, but his pedigree suggests he should love two turns and grass. He is by Mr. Big (Dynaformer), produced by an Artie Schiller mare. Fourth Race 1. Peachtree Road 2. Moraz 3. Lunatic ~PEACHTREE ROAD^ stretches to a route for her third start, after an improved try second out. She finished third in a fast sprint that was validated when runner-up Empire House returned to win. 'ROAD is sired by Quality Road and produced by a Thunder Gulch mare whose best foal was Sunland Oaks winner Princess Arabella. Therefore, two turns should be fine for 'ROAD, who could make the lead against a field short on speed. ~MORAZ^ ran like she needed a start first out, distant third behind a pair of seasoned maidens that ran away from the field. It was a creditable debut by MORAZ, she worked twice since, her stable does better with second-start maidens (22 percent, past five years) than first- start maidens (7 percent). ~LUNATIC^ improved second out, a close fourth while losing ground through the turn. A mile should be within reach. A REAL HERO, stablemate of MORAZ, split the field in her sprint debut. Fifth Race 1. Superman Shaq 2. Exhalting 3. Gator Shining ~SUPERMAN SHAQ^ switches to grass and adds Lasix as the choice in this N1X turf sprint for 3yos, which is an easier spot than the N1X dirt sprint he tried last out in Kentucky. His sire Shackleford gets 14 percent turf-sprint winners, sibling Monomoy Girl began her career with successive wins on turf. The point is, grass should be fine for 'SHAQ, whose previous sprint in California was a dominating maiden win. The colt's trainer Peter Miller entered the week atop the standings, 7-for-22. ~EXHALTING^ could vie for favoritism based on three straight front-running wins on synthetic and turf at Golden Gate. The speed of the speed returning to SoCal, he will take the field as far as he can. From a small sample of seven races this meet at six furlongs on turf, just one was won by the pacesetter. ~GATOR SHINING^, maiden turf sprint winner last out, will rally in a race that could set up for his style. European import MINSKY might be ranked too low by this handicapper. He beat a good field in his final start in England; the second-, fourth- and fifth-place finishers subsequently returned to win. Sixth Race 1. Sybil's Kitty 2. Rolinga 3. Billy K In a $10k claiming sprint for filly-mare sprinters, ~SYBIL'S KITTY^ rates the edge returning to the track on which she scored both wins. Her recent races are okay, and though her speed figures are on the slow side, similar can be said about most of her rivals. The filly that finished in front of her last out returned to win a starter allowance 10 days later. ~ROLINGA^ has an upset chance taking another class drop. The come-from-behind mare has run well previously at SA; trainer Aggie Ordonez and jockey Abel Cedillo were a productive combo when they occasionally teamed in Northern California (5-for-16). In-form ~BILLY K^ has an upset chance, up in class after a restricted claiming win at LRC. WANDERING PATROL drops to the bottom, the first time she has raced for a claim tag. UNTOUCHED ELEGANCE led virtually gate to wire in a restricted claiming race last out at LRC. She fits with these. Seventh Race Page 4 of 5
1. Border Town 2. Murad Khan 3. Salvator Mundi Even though he was thwarted three times at this N2X level, all at short prices, ~BORDER TOWN^ gets another chance. The trouble-prone closer was gelded prior to his most recent start in October, but a mile and one-eighth from behind a slow pace was too much to ask. Off since, working well, he might be a better horse in his second go-around as a gelding. He also has a history of running well fresh, and might be best suited to this one-mile trip. First start back, ready to fire. ~MURAD KHAN^, an eight-time winner who has won this condition and is entered for the optional $62.5k claim tag, is usually reliable. He missed by only a half-length last out against similar, with trouble late in the race. Back at the same level, racing in top form, logical contender. ~SALVATOR MUNDI^ ran well in the same race as the second choice, third by a neck. Obvious fit again here. FRONTIER MARKET returns from a 10-month layoff while dropping in for a tag. He ran well against much better prior to his layoff, and appears to have trained well for his return. Eighth Race 1. Zestful 2. Pubilius Syrus 3. Two Thirty Five Front-runner ~ZESTFUL^ and late-runner ~PUBILIUS SYRUS^ are the principals in this $25k claiming starter allowance route. ZESTFUL is speed of the field, a 10-for-29 pro who is dropping in class after wiring a N2X at Del Mar. Assuming he clears the field from the rail, the front-runner can take them gate to wire. Speed has been good this meet at a mile on dirt. Seven races: four winners led gate to wire, two pressed from second. If the top choice falters, resurgent PUBILIUS SYRUS could be along in time. 'SYRUS switched to dirt three starts back, and has not lost since. He has won on all three SoCal dirt tracks, and will be rolling late in search of his fourth straight. ~TWO THIRTY FIVE^ returns from Kentucky and drops in class. A veteran stakes winner, he has won three times at SA. SYNTHESIS has speed, and is the one that could mess up the top choice. Ninth Race 1. Sly 2. Fly to Mars 3. Camino de Estrella ~SLY^ finished an okay third behind race-8 contender Pubilius Syrus last out on dirt, but SLY prefers grass. He switches to preferred footing for this, both wins were on the SA grass. He can wear them down while dropping to $25k claiming. The race sets up for a closer. ~FLY TO MARS^ figures off his Cal-bred allowance/claiming win two back. He has lost a step at this stage of his career, but the 6-for-21 veteran should get another good trip forwardly placed pressing the pace. ~CAMINO DE ESTRELLA^ has upset potential, second off the claim and returning to grass. His turf races in summer at Del Mar were actually okay. WORTHY TURK will rally late. FORAY is speed, and so is DR. TROUTMAN. Page 5 of 5
